This week I'm speaking with the theater performer, director and teacher Ethan Kobayashi-Hsieh. Ethan is the creator of TIAMAT, which stands for The Integrative Approach and Methodology of Active Transformation. Put succinctly, Ethan's work uses theater as the means for practitioners to create an embodied, multi-perspectival awareness of themselves as applies to a robust search for meaning and purpose.

I first encountered his work through the podcast of cognitive scientist and professor John Vervaeke. I immediately saw parallels to my own theories about theater as a pathway toward individuation: Jung's term for the process of intense self discovery and meaning making. Both Ethan and John's work has proven inspirational and I reached out to Ethan and began a conversation.

This led to our recording what you're about to see which lasted nearly two hours. I'm breaking the episode in two for ease of digestion. We get in to the nuts and bolts of how theater is uniquely suited as an ecology of practice and it's immediacy of effect. Ethan also explores deeper aspects of his work as relates to Vervaeke's theories of meaning making.

My guest today is the executive coach, Mike Hanas. Before his career in leadership coaching, Mike was the head of school at the Carolina Friends School in Durham, NC, the San Franscisco Friends School, and has thrived in education since 1985. He received his masters in Administration, planning and social policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and most recently earned his certification at the Berkely Executive Coaching Institute.

Mike began his coaching practice, Furthering Leadership in 2018, emphasizing conflict resolution and consilience in his work with individuals and teams.

As the Quotidian Podcast begins to turn toward the learning, coaching, and leadership space, I was particularly curious to hear Mike's thoughts on post-covid leadership trends, how Quaker pedagogy intersects with his practice, and what is both most needed and requested from his clients. He has spent 30 years researching the theory and the practice of ‘the zone’ of peak performance and studying multiple mind/body disciplines. In 2001 he left the theatre to co-found the arts-based leadership development consultancy Olivier Mythodrama. In 2013 he founded his own consultancy, CORE PRESENCE.

He was an Associate Fellow at the University of Oxford Said Business School 2010–15 and currently teaches regularly at the IMD Business School in Lausanne.

Nicholas and I spoke about presence in coaching, a subject I’ve delved deeply into as a result of my own coaching training, as well as the differences between being and doing. He examines these topics closely in his new book, Leader as Healer. Nicholas is an amazing man, with an incredible depth of knowledge and passion for helping people.

Dr Mary Antonia Wood is a scholar of archetypal depth psychology and the author of the new book, The Archetypal Artist: Reimagining Creativity and the Call to Create. Her work and focus are among the principal resources I claim as inspiring this show and the topics I curate here, namely a reinvigoration of meaning through the creative process.

Dr Wood is the chair of the Depth Psychology and Creativity program at the Pacifica Graduate Institute, and an accomplished visual artist whose work draws deeply from both the surrealist bricolage movement as well as the feminist symbolism of seminal painters such as O'keefe and Cornell. Her work reflects a deep interest in the eternal mysteries of existence. She has said of her work, ". . . it is an act of discovery ­ a journey through mystery, legend, and myth. It is a sort of spiritual archaeology, which eventually leads to the barest elements, the hidden essence within." She is an encyclopedia of creative philosophy and reference, whose breadth of knowledge continues to astound me at every turn.

We spoke about the shamanic origins of human creativity, the role of the artist in the growing social and political space, and her middle name and the power she derives from her Hispanic heritage.

This week inaugurates the series: Love and Work, focusing on the interplay of relationships and creativity.

I met Grace in the Fall of 2020 as we both began work in our graduate studies at the Pacifica Graduate Institute. Her then-fiancee, now husband! Elliott joined another cohort at the same school, diving into the world of archetypal depth psychology–the psychology of the unconscious–to add to their already enormous breadth of knowledge of the human psyche and spirit through the lens of comedy.

Both Grace and Elliott are well known to the YouTube community, having been content generators for over a decade. In Grace's case, for 15 years in such groundbreaking offerings as My Damn Channel & Daily Grace.

They are comedians as well as extremely observant, deep thinkers, and it was only natural that two people with such incredible talent would fall madly in love.

We spoke about their history together, about the dangers of social media in an age of anxiety, and how these tools can be used to transform, rather than simply amuse, entertain, and edify.

• Daniel Domig's work infiltrates the unconscious with alarming precision and emotional intensity. He contends with the insta-image and digital marketplace of immediatism that floods modern consciousness. His is a process-based art form exploring human connection, among other things. We spoke about these connections, the loss of poetry as a means of expression of the soul, and how paintings provide us hospitality. • In the world of astrology, the name Richard Tarnas is well known. His book Cosmos & Psyche broke ground in establishing a hybrid of Jungian archetypal psychology and a contemporary version of astrology that includes rather than repudiates modernity.

• Perhaps less well known, but certainly formidable in her range and scope of knowledge is his daughter, Becca Tarnas.

• Becca is a scholar, artist, and counseling astrologer, and an editor of Archai: The Journal of Archetypal Cosmology. She received her PhD in Philosophy and Religion at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco. Her dissertation is titled The Back of Beyond: The Red Books of C.G. Jung and J.R.R. Tolkien. She teaches at both Pacifica Graduate Institute and CIIS, as well as several other online education platforms, and has published one book thus far, titled Journey to the Imaginal Realm: A Reader’s Guide to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
