  • Finding Your Place In Idaho with Emily Wakild

Dr. Emily Wakild is a professor and historian and came in to talk about how people find their places in Idaho. As people move to this state, there is an ever evolving problem with building housing and changing the landscape. Boise specifically recently voted to tax itself to preserve more of the surrounding hills and open space because people felt it just wouldn’t be the same without it. Dr. Wakild came on to talk about the need for our surrounding areas to reflect what we associate with home and what feels right. Enjoy!

It’s also home to many law enforcement agencies, like Ada County and Canyon county Sheriff offices, Idaho State Police, Eagle Police Department, Meridian Police Department, and many more. The school systems in the area are also quite diverse. Boise school district and West Ada School District, though right next to each other, are quite different. Ada County is also home to our state capital and many of our elected officials.

  • Ghana Make A Difference with Austin Johnson

Austin Johnson lives in the Treasure Valley and is the director of Ghana Make a Difference, an organization that runs an orphanage in Ghana on the banks of lake Volta. The area is a hot bed for human trafficking and slavery as parents routinely unknowingly sell their own children into slavery. As these children are liberated, they need not only food and shelter but also education and a glimmer of hope that they’ll learn to survive in the real world and perhaps one day be reunited with their families. Austin’s story and mission are both heart breaking and awe inspiring. Enjoy!

  • Barriers to Ag in Idaho & The Death Tax with Mitchell Searle

Mitchell Searle is a multi-generation Idaho farmer and came in to speak on the difficulties around entering the ag field professionally. The astronomical cost of land as well as the variability of the product market has made this option all but impossible for anyone trying to start from scratch. For those inheriting an operation from an older generation, there’s also an increasingly confusing Death Tax to be considered. Mitchell was a wealth of knowledge and understanding. Enjoy!

Tori O’Neal is a fifth generation, sustainable rancher in Custer County, Idaho. She didn’t go straight into ranching, but instead headed to college, left the state, and worked in food product development. Throughout her work and travels, she recognized the growing trend of people feeling disconnected from the food they consume and the growing desire to understand the food system better. She works every day to help address that. Enjoy!

  • Giving Machines in Idaho with Sid Sullivan

Sid Sullivan as a Giving Machine ambassador here in the Treasure Valley and came in to speak about the nature of the machines and what charities they go to help fund. There is a problem with giving that has become highlighted in the past decade with some organizations taking large sums of money and giving very little to those intended recipients. The giving machines completely eliminate that problem by offering not just donor directed giving (you can purchase specific items for those in need like a pair of shoes or glasses or meals for a week), but they also deliver near 100% of the funds to the item and person. They are a beautiful way to focus on helping others without the worry that you may be supporting the wrong thing. Enjoy!

  • Faith in Medicine in Idaho with Jim Souza, MD

Dr. Jim Souza is the Chief Physician Executive at St. Luke’s Hospital system and came on to talk about the state of people’s faith in modern medicine. In recent years, people’s belief in the western medicine system has started declining. This has led to a paradox: we know more about medicine now than ever in recorded history and people are seeking alternative treatments more. Dr. Souza’s insights were both wonderful and heartbreaking.
