Thank you so much for tuning in.

Thank you so much for telling a friend, as I always say.

And today, we're gonna have a lot of fun.

I am talking to Ron Sheffield.

Ron is the CEO and president of the Berkshire Hathaway Home Services EWM Realty operation in Miami.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       01:18

    We'll say South Florida.

I met Ron with our CEO when when Michael Davey was out here traveling through Florida.

Just kinda getting a sense of the of the Florida market for for an Australian.

It was unique to to to be able to experience that.

Ron was kind enough to have lunch with us.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       01:28

And, boy, I could tell just how during that conversation, he was somebody I had to talk to at somebody's story I had to get.

I'm really excited to get this thing started.

    Ron, welcome to the podcast.

    Ron Shuffield                                                                                 01:30

    Yeah.

    Thank you, Bill.

    It's good to be here.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       01:42

    Yeah.

You know, you and I met about a month ago or so, maybe longer.

    Yeah.

Down in your neck of the woods, Coral Gables area.

We had a a really nice lunch with Nina Fabbri from the Berkshire Hathaway Home Services company.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       01:42

    Right?

    Ron Shuffield                                                                                 01:45

    Yes.

    Absolutely.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       02:07

Our CEO, Michael Davey, was there as well.

And it was really fun to to talk to you and learn about really, the unique space that the Miami real estate market is, and we're gonna talk more about that.

But first, I always start the podcast with Where everything started for Ron?

Now I'm pretty sure, and most people probably could tell that that accent's probably not a South Florida native.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       02:10

    Yeah.

    Right?

    So far so good.

    Ron Shuffield                                                                                 02:15

    Yeah.

I grew up in New York City.

    Oh, I Let's

    Bill Risser                                                                                       02:21

go with where you grew up and And how long how long before you made the move down here?

    Sure.

    Ron Shuffield                                                                                 02:35

Well, I I grew up in Tennessee and still the 5th largest city in state, Jackson, Tennessee, which is near Memphis, but certainly not at a huge place, fifty thousand people.

So you got to know a lot of your your family and do everybody in town sort of thing.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       02:35

    Yeah.

    Ron Shuffield                                                                                 03:09

So I had a great growing up experience and high school experience.

And then, you know, like a lot of guys and and, you know, kids from that area, we went over to Knoxville, which is three hundred miles away to go to school at the University of Tennessee.

    Yeah.

So I spent 4 years at the University of Tennessee, and, you know, I had a wonderful experience there and met, of course, people that are still friends of mine today that I've known for, you know, decades now.

So It's a lot of, you know, a lot of fond memories looking back on that, but after college, you know, you kinda wanna not maybe go right back home.

    Ron Shuffield                                                                                 03:24

And so I moved to Florida, and I thought I stayed for a few years, probably end up back in the south some place.

And so here I am all these years later, and you know, live my life down here and, you know, 3 Kia's in 5 grand case later, I'm not going anywhere.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       03:48

You know, Ron, I moved to Florida in 2017.

Knowing I was coming to the south, I was coming to SCC country, kinda.

It's just north of us up in Gainesville.

But, man, it's a whole different world from growing up in San Diego and then moving to Phoenix where college sports are just whatever.

Boy, if I hear another SCC person tell me, yeah, it just means more or it just matters more.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       03:50

    There's a word yet.

There's something that the SCC people love to

    Ron Shuffield                                                                                 03:51

    say.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       03:58

But but so you you're you're a volunteer through and through.

    Rocky Top, the whole thing.

    I mean, it's Nylon Stadium.

    Right?

    It's just unbelievable.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       04:07

    Right?

    What's going on up there?

But I've got some buddies who went to Florida, and they really don't like Tennessee.

    What what what happened there?

    Ron Shuffield                                                                                 04:21

Well, you know, it's a there's been a competition there for a long long time.

    You know?

And when I was in school, it was obviously, you know, very competitive at that point too.

I think we probably were a little friendlier toward each other when I was in college, you know, 40 years ago.

    Bill...

    Bill Risser                                                                                       00:49

    everybody.

Welcome to episode 353 of the real estate sessions podcast.

As always, thank you so much for tuning in.

Thank you so much for telling our friend.

As you heard in the intro, at This is another shortcuts episode where I'm interviewing somebody from the past.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       01:09

This is somebody who who has logged more hours on this podcast than anyone other than me.

That should if you're a listener, you know what I'm talking about already.

This is gonna be Joe Rand.

Joe is doing some really cool stuff.

I can't wait to ask him the 4 questions, see where he's at in his life.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       01:16

    Let's get this thing started.

Joe Rand, it feels like it's been, I don't know, 2 months since we talked last.

    Joe Rand                                                                                        01:27

It feels like 5 minutes ago, Bill.

It feels like as soon as I talk to you, it's like we fall back into the same rhythm.

    Yeah.

    I know we're doing a straight podcast.

We're gonna answer some real questions.

    Joe Rand                                                                                        01:51

    about real issues.

    Right.

But I just can't help but harken back to the summer 2 years ago when we did those dumb Randy and raving episodes with me answering listener questions, spontaneously, no no prep at all, and having a lot of fun with it.

And, like, for some reason now, this is not the way I normally talk, Bill.

This is only the way I talk to you.

    Joe Rand                                                                                        02:03

    on the podcast.

I have a normal voice, but I'm falling into my rambling and raving vocal pattern where I repeat your name, Bill, every 30 seconds.

    and just keep going.

But I'm excited to be back.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       02:15

First of all, my last three episodes have been real estate rewind sessions.

This is what I do when I'm vacationing.

I I've just gotta take a break, and I ran 3 of the randing and rravings.

    So that was pretty fun.

    Joe Rand                                                                                        02:27

    I saw that.

I was very I was I was honored that those made the rewind.

They were good enough for the rewinds.

I'm sure they confused the heck out of people who didn't hear them the first time.

    Like, what exactly is this?

    Joe Rand                                                                                        02:55

And I'm answering questions about the horse sized ducks, and I'm answering questions about stealing melons or mangoes from supermarkets and whatnot.

Giving people my own specific taste of morality, which is very skewed to against the sort of the traditional conceptions of morality.

So that's I'm very honored by that.

I'm really it's very nice of you to rerun those.

and, hopefully, you'll get a chance to listen to them because they are kinda fun.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       03:02

    Yeah.

    There is a subset.

I've got them categorized on the podcast where they and on over, do a search for ranting and raving.

You pull up all 20 episodes.

    Joe Rand                                                                                        03:05

We did too many of those.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       03:15

    Oh my god.

    20.

    Wow.

    Hey.

Do you know if it was March of 2019 for your very first appearance on the the real estate sessions?

    Bill Risser                                                                                       03:19

Now you're kinda like, I don't know, who who was on the tonight show the most?

    Joe Rand                                                                                        03:21

    Oh, yeah.

    I'm, like, Don Rickel's.

    Bill Risser                                                                                       03:21

    Don Rickel,

    Joe Rand                                                                                        03:41

probably that's the best that's the one of the best analogies that Don Rickel's when he would come on, like, as a fill in when somebody would back out.

I have no idea who backed out on you, Bill.

Oh, it's like 20 minutes before we called, and you're like, Hey, Joe.

Can you do a fill in?

Like, I wasn't able to get, you know, Robert Rifkin backed out on me, so I need somebody at the last minute.

    Joe Rand                                                                                        04:00

just come in and and just dabble on for a few minutes.

But, yeah, I remember and you know what I remember very distinctly about my first appearance, and it was my first experience.

It was the first time we met.

We had not met or or anything.

It was our literally, the first experience we ever had engaging with each other was on your podcast

    Bill Risser                                                                                       04:00

    4

    Joe Rand                                                                                        04:27

    years ago.

And the reason you asked me on was because a woman by the name of Melanie Cache Canadian realtor had mentioned my book, like, in an episode.

    Yep.

And then you said, I have to I have to bring this guy on because she was very, very complimentary.

And I still remember it's one of the nicest things, you know, her her little dialogue about reading the book and how it affected her was really one of the nicest things anyone's ever said about me.

    Joe Rand                                                                                        04:42

    It's not a I gotta be honest.

The list of nice things people have said about me relatively short.

    It's not a it's not a it's not a high bar.

It's not a very heavy competition.

but it is one of the nicest things anyway that were said with Melanie shared on the podcast.

    Joe Rand                                                                                        04:53

And then you had me on, and then we had fun, and then we decided to do the branding in ravings, and then...

You'll hear about the challenges of a career in theatre and recommendations for musicals to watch over the summer. Finally, Rand receives an unusual question from a Rate My Agent product ambassador asking if he'd prefer to fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses. What would you choose? Tune in to find out!

    00:26

Hey everybody. Welcome to another this episode of Randing and Raving. We are back with Joe Rand, chief creative officer for Howard Hanna Realty, and real estate rack and tour. The premise of this series is very simple. We have listeners call in to 480-270-4590, and leave a question or a comment for Joe to respond to.

    Bill Risser

    00:39

Joe has no idea which voice mail is going to play for him, and we just sit back, relax, and let Joe go. So let's get this show on the road. Hey, Joe. Great to see you. How are you doing?

    Joe Rand

    00:50

I am great, Bill. Thank you for having me. Thank you as always for hosting these and moderating this little 10 minutes of fun that we get to have every week. I really appreciate it.

    Bill Risser

    00:52

    Well More like 10.

    Joe Rand

    00:53

    Supposed to be

    Bill Risser

    00:53

    10.

    Joe Rand

    01:09

I mean, listen. Well, what you clearly, what you're not doing is is doing your editing. So, like, you're doing a great job moderating, but, like, You're not editing me down after I do this where you're lopping up all the boring parts to leave only the gold. You gotta just leave the gold, Bill. Lop everything yourself.

    Joe Rand

    01:11

Chop it all down in 10 minutes. I'm giving you

    Bill Risser

    01:11

    15

    Joe Rand

    01:17

minutes because I want you to I want you to pick up the best stuff. You know? I am just kidding. You know? I gotta be careful when

    Bill Risser

    01:22

you have when when you get people the okay to edit what say? because a lot of a lot of weird stuff can happen.

    Joe Rand

    01:33

That's I don't well, I don't care. The what are the what are the Russian bots gonna do? But, you know, you're right, Bill, because I think last week's thing when we talked about Jay Thompson's question about the the NAR lawsuit.

    Bill Risser

    01:34

    Yeah.

    Joe Rand

    01:39

That that was, like, 45 minutes long, but I'm forever. I felt like I

    Bill Risser

    01:39

    was -- -- quite that.

    Joe Rand

    01:42

I felt like I was going through -- -- quite that long.

    Bill Risser

    01:54

It was an important it was an important topic. You know? And It was important. Hey. I I, you know, I was telling you a couple weeks ago that I had a a meeting coming up in San Diego, a team building meeting for the rate my agent employees in the US.

    Bill Risser

    01:58

Nice. and that was last that was last weekend. It was or last week.

    Joe Rand

    02:00

San Diego. Very well. San Diego.

    Bill Risser

    02:13

Yeah. It went really well. You know, to to be able to see everybody for first time in person after being on Zooms for a year, it was really cool. And we'd we've brought some new people on board so they got to kind of understand them. the culture.

    Bill Risser

    02:28

Molly and I had a great time kind of, you know, facilitating some sessions. And and then I wanna tell you what I did for the first time. We we had a team building, you know, outing on Friday afternoon, and we went ax throwing.

    Joe Rand

    02:31

    Have you had axe throwing?

    Bill Risser

    02:32

    Have you done that?

    Joe Rand

    02:34

I've never done that. No. I've never I've never thrown an axe.

    Bill Risser

    02:52

Yeah. It's it's You know, my my first thought was, you know, if you had like a heated session right before you left the office to go back throwing, and then you're just gonna go put axes in everybody's hands? That's that doesn't seem -- No. No. -- doesn't seem like the best idea.

    Bill Risser

    02:52

    Right?

    Joe Rand

    03:03

I gotta be honest with you. I'm trying to figure out the appeal of throwing axes. Like like, it just seems like a lot of work. I mean, what are you aiming? You're aiming at, like, targets and stuff?

    Bill Risser

    03:12

Yeah. There's a bullseye, and and you're you're doing your best. First of all, you're trying just to figure out how to get it to rotate, the right number of rotations to actually have the blade hit the wood. Yeah.

    Joe Rand

    03:21

I understand. I I yeah. And and so but that seems like information that I don't need to have on a daily basis. Yeah. Like, you know, I if I'm asking like, put it this way.

    Joe Rand

    03:33

if I if it turned out I had an enormous skill. Like, great I was just a natural at throwing an axe. What exactly am I gonna do with that, Bill? Where am I? Am I gonna go on tour?

    Joe Rand

    03:36

What do I do with the fact that I'm a natural axe thrower?

    Bill Risser

    03:45

Here's what you do. You you set up your tent at your your vent in your community that you do regularly. Yeah. And you got tons of trees in the park. Big trees.

    Joe Rand

    03:45

    Yeah.

    Bill Risser

    03:49

and and you you do some axe throwing demonstrations.

    Joe Rand

    03:49

    Was the

    Bill Risser

    03:50

    you know? Everyone.

    Joe Rand

    03:57

Yeah. Okay. I could do that. But I don't necessarily wanna do that. Like, that doesn't seem like something that would be a lot of fun.

    Joe Rand

    04:18

I'm gonna go throw the axe in front of people, and it's not like it's a practical skill Like, how about shots you don't chop down trees by throwing axes at them. You have to actually chop them. You can't, like this is like and what am I I'm gonna I'm gonna use it to like, as home protection, keep an axe by my bedside. Someone walks in. I need so much clearance.

    Joe Rand

    04:30

I would lift the axe up, hit my wife in the head, I kill her with the back of the ass. Then I'm trying to throw with yeah. How am I gonna hit some guy moving target with an axe even if I'm good at it? This seems like

    Bill Risser

    04:37

One thing one thing you learn at the axe throwing place is, first of all, you're drinking while you're doing it. So that's kinda cool, you know, and you learn.

    Joe Rand

    04:43

That seems like a good mix. Yeah. That seems like a good idea. It should be the the actual bucket. They don't you don't actually do that.

    Joe Rand

    04:54

They don't listen great. I'm I'm I'm my guess is they wouldn't let you drink alcohol anymore than they let you drink alcohol. You know, I get the when you do the gun things in in Vegas, and let's just fire off, like, AK 47s and stuff.

    Bill Risser

    04:56

Oh, when you're on the desert and have fun and blow steam.

    Joe Rand

    05:05

When you go well, when you go to Rob Hans house, and he's like, a whole armoring in his basement. Crop's basically he's like a survivalist now. Yeah.

    Bill Risser

    05:06

    His basement's a shooting room.

    Joe Rand

    05:13

Oh, yeah. He's he's not. He's He's all set up for the for the revolution. He's ready to go. He's ready to go.

    Joe Rand

    05:29

Alright. So I will say the one thing is when you live in Tampa Bay, like, going to San Diego is not a big deal. For me, San Diego is wonderful because I get out of the New York weather, but for, like, Tampa Bay to San Diego is the same thing. It would have been great. Why couldn't why couldn't rate my agents sprint for you guys to go to, like, Melbourne?

    Joe Rand

    05:33

Yeah. Go down under. They should run the barbie in the whole bit.

    Bill Risser

    05:38

That's later. Right? They're still so locked down down there. No foreigners are coming in.

    Joe Rand

    05:41

Oh, that's true. They don't want you in your disease. No.

    Bill Risser

    05:42

They don't. They they don't want Americans --

    Joe Rand

    06:10

I I won't one last point I wanna make is you you when you said about, like, getting together, have you found what I have found and I'll I'll share this with you. Because in the experience I've had, we're like, we had a a birthday party last month for my wife. Right? Mhmm. And during the party, a number of people remarked that it was the first time they'd been to a like a party, like an adult party Like, with drinks on a we were on, like, this nice deck in Westchester overlooking the Hudson.

    Joe Rand

    06:30

And said it was the first time they've done it in, like, 15 or 16 months. Right? And -- Yeah. -- what was interesting about is that we all kind of agreed that it came back quickly. Like, All these concerns that people had, like, in the winter about, like, when we finally are able to get in the same room, is are we gonna know how to talk anymore?

    Joe Rand

    06:41

it came back. It's like riding a bike. Like, interacting with other people is a very natural thing to do. So it wasn't like we forgot how to do it because we were cooped up inside for a year and a couple of months.

    Bill Risser

    06:52

No. It same thing. It you know, look, these are all people who who daily interact with each other anyways on screens. Yeah. it was really nice to be all sitting in the same room.

    Bill Risser

    06:58

You know, just sharing stories, doing some work. I mean, it it it it it came back.

    Joe Rand

    07:04

We also have really nice people. I rate my agent. It's a lot of great people. I'm Molly, and and you working there. There's a bunch of other people there that I think are really terrific.

    Joe Rand

    07:15

So I'm glad you had it good. I'm glad you enjoyed the axe throwing and all the alcohol. And and and even though I think it's pointless activity. I'm glad you did it. Welcome back.

    Joe Rand

    07:22

And good luck this week. I know you're going to Kiwi Island to play golf with your son, which is awesome. So have a great time doing that as well.

    Bill Risser

    07:24

We'll talk about that on the next episode.

    Joe Rand

    07:29

Yeah. Tell me how it went when. How how your how your round went. Alright. Let's get to some questions.

    Joe Rand

    07:30

    We have we Okay.

    Bill Risser

    07:36

Here's the here's here's today's question. Short and sweet. That's what I'm gonna call. I'll give this one up. Maybe I'll start giving them titles.

    Joe Rand

    07:38

Short and sweet. Here we go.

    Kristi McNeely

    07:56

Hey there, Joe. This is Christie Kneeley, product ambassador for rate, my agent, and my question for you is, Would you rather fight 1 horse sized duck or a 100 duck sized horses? Thank you.

    Joe Rand

    08:14

Well, how awesome? We actually were talking about rate my agent, your company that you work with now, and and we get a question from one of your colleagues who I know a little bit. I don't know her very well. The one thing I know about her I know she does your product demos and things like that. She's worked in the industry for a while.

    Joe Rand

    08:19

very nice woman, but comes from a theater background. She was Bill, you know this. Right? But she was on -- Yeah.

    Bill Risser

    08:19

    --

    Joe Rand

    08:27

she was on Broadway for, like, like, 10 years or so. And she was I forget what the show she was on. Do you know what show she was in that, like, was good? Yeah. A little little

    Bill Risser

    08:29

    tiny one called cap

    Joe Rand

    08:35

Oh, she was in cats. Oh my god. I that's that's did you ever see cats, Bill?

    Bill Risser

    08:38

No. I'm not an Andrew Lloyd Weber fan.

    Joe Rand

    08:39

    I It

    Bill Risser

    08:41

    I don't see his stuff.

    Joe Rand

    09:05

Even though you don't like Andrew Ledewebber, and I I promise you this. We know we I know you still not have you still not gone to see Amadeus, and I still haven't seen a baseball game. So we're still we have all summer to get this done, so we're waiting for the We're both gonna be up late night on, like, Labor Day. I'll be watching the game, and you'll be watching Amadeus so we get this done by the end of this secular summer.

    Bill Risser

    09:06

    Right.

    Joe Rand

    09:24

But one thing I think you actually would like is Jesus Christ superstar. Gdiscount superstar is an Andrew Lloyd Weber show, but it's not Broadway ish. It's I think I think it's his best show. and I it's the one I enjoy the most. So just a little recommendation for you.

    Joe Rand

    09:45

She was in cats, though, which I do not necessarily recommend, because cats is really an acquired taste. You have to be really into musical theater to like cats. And and I it because I actually had a friend in it. I used to date a woman who was years ago years and years ago. I dated a woman who was on Broadway, and she was in cats for about 6 months when I dated her.

    Joe Rand

    10:07

So I got to, you know, pick her up after the show and stuff like that. It was a really interesting time. I like to meet all these people in theater and get to see how the theater life is, and that's a that's a tough life. I mean, those those those people work really hard, and they they don't they don't, like there's a lot of people who are who like like, like Christy who are in theater, and they, you know, they strike it rich. They make it big.

    Joe Rand

    10:29

They're on a Broadway show, but, you know, they have short careers. You know? It's really tough to maintain there there are very few, like, you know, choice upper level roles available at any given time. And, like, they just they they cycle through. And there's always a every year, there's a new batch of and a young man that are waiting to, you know, jump into the chorus.

    Joe Rand

    10:41

So it's a tough that's a tough racket, man. That's a tough racket. Alright. Apologies to everybody, especially to Bill. My airbuds are so old, and they have kicked out now, like, three times during this recording.

    Joe Rand

    11:01

Until finally, we can't use So I might sound different than I sound a few minutes ago because I'm now just using the microphone on my laptop. So my apologies to that. it's it's Bill in in Broadway, they call this going up. Like, if you get you want forget your line and you end up being a sequence So I went up on this in this call.

    Bill Risser

    11:06

Yeah. Yeah. So you want your line? Is that what you're asking for? Line.

    Bill Risser

    11:19

Line. I gotta before before I let you continue, I gotta give you one other show she was in. She actually got to kiss Matthew Brodrick multiple times. How how to succeed in business without even trying?

    Joe Rand

    11:39

That's awesome. And I I haven't talked about that because I'm I saw that show in its initial run And I saw it, like, early in the run because I saw Matthew Broderick in it. So I'm sure she was in it when I saw it either doing the lead or doing or, you know, maybe she was even in that role when she went there. So that's great. She yeah.

    Joe Rand

    11:48

She's great. So her question is this. the the horse and the ducks I don't know who came up with this question. I've heard this before. The would you rather fight a

    Bill Risser

    11:48

    100

    Joe Rand

    12:01

duck sized horses. So they're small horses. They're little tiny horses. Or would you rather fight a 1 giant duck? And and let's let's go through each of the options.

    Joe Rand

    12:04

Like, here's the problem with the 100 you take a

    Bill Risser

    12:05

    100

    Joe Rand

    12:25

duck sized horses, and you have to fight them, is that that's a lot of duck sized horses, Bill. I mean, a 100. Think about a 100 docs would be. I don't know sure I would fight a 100 duck sized docs bill. The 100 duck sized ducks could probably kick my ass on their...

  • Real Estate Sessions Rewind - Ashley Houseman, Team Leader, Ohana Homes - Houseman Team powered by eXp Realty

    Ashley Houseman_ Show Notes

Authenticity, no doubt, is a transformative life value. But have you ever thought of it as a necessary skill for a real estate agent?

Meet Ashley Houseman, the Team Leader at Ohana Homes – Houseman Team Powered by eXp Realty, on the podcast today. After nearly 18 years of crushing it in the real estate game, Ashley attributes a large part of her success to her unique and authentic approach to business. A third-generation realtor, Ashley was pursuing marketing in junior college and was headed to real estate just like her elders did, preparing herself for the greater responsibilities that may come. What she didn’t know then was how she would gain a strong liking for her job as she progressed, which has since taken her enormously forward in her career.

During her conversation with Bill, Ashley touches on the many significant parts of her personal and professional life, including her Florida life as a mom of three, her serious interest in sports in her earlier days, and the values she abides by for ever-lasting success. She also discusses her experience working with and leaving Coldwell Banker, the nation’s largest residential real estate brokerage company, and the lessons the period taught her. Listen in!

    Success clues:

    ●     Ashley swears by authenticity for success in real estate. In her words, “try to be different, take a different approach to real estate, instead of saying– hey, look at my new listing that hits the market. Find a really cool aspect of it, and highlight that.” It all boils down to uniqueness that stems from authenticity.

    ●     Relationship-building is incredibly important in your career, especially in real estate. Ashley makes sure to spend time with her clients and followers, which includes sending birthday emails to every member of her 8000-person sphere!

    ●     In today’s normalizing markets, finding yourself a good mentor is essential. You’ve got to find your tribe, find good people who’d help you with the fundamentals and allow you to succeed in your journey.

    ●     Make the best use of social media, not just by posting and interacting regularly, but by posting authentic, valuable, and noteworthy content and making sure to use the platforms to connect with your people.

  • Real Estate Session Rewind - Katie Kossev - CEO/Owner, The Kossev Group

From Livermore to Texas and broadcast journalism to real estate investing, Katie Kossev’s career has seen game-changing pivots. But irrespective of the events, Katie has thrived, learning, and turning all the shifts and pivots into life-altering experiences.

Interestingly, this real estate winner was introduced to real estate by chance.  It happened when her best friend from radio days wanted to try out real estate – they decided to do it together. They got their real estate licenses, and her friend, then a mom of three, went full-time with it soon. Katie, however, worked a day job and juggled it on the side before finally deciding to pursue it full-time.

In her career spanning more than a decade in the industry, Katie has moved from employee to business owner and is now a renowned speaker too. She sits with Bill in this episode to reveal the exciting and essential bits from her real estate career for anyone starting or experienced in the industry. Katie also gets into the best parts about being a real estate investor and, most importantly, being a co-real estate business owner with your husband. The most valuable advice she gives away is cultivating the zest for learning and growth, being ready for rejection, not believing in the “fake lives” showcased on social media, and believing in who you are.

Please tune in for a candid chat with Katie today as she gives a 360-degree look into her professional journey and how she goes hand in hand with her personal life.

    Success clues:

    ● Changes and pivots are sometimes too challenging. Katie shares how she decided to move from Intero, her company, for nine years, deciding to take the next step in her career.

    ● Finding your expertise is important. Katie realizes and accepts that delegating isn’t for her and works as a team with her husband.

     ● Social media is too powerful to ignore in recent times. In a business like real estate especially, your goal often involves being a magnet to people, showing them your skills and abilities, and convincing them to work with you, meaning you have to put in the effort to make yourself accessible to people.

    ● Accountability is an essential skill to build for an entrepreneur.

Real Estate Sessions - Veronica Figueroa

Bill sits down with Veronica Figueroa, who leads the #1 eXp team worldwide with over 2000+ homes sold since the beginning of her career. She is a sought-after keynote speaker and success coach to real estate teams and has sat on Zillow’s Advisory Board since 2016.

Veronica has been named an Inman Influencer, and in 2017, The Figueroa Team won The Most Innovative Team of the Year by Inman for their bold partnership with the I-Buyer movement and Instant Offers.

Veronica starts the conversation by looking back on her days as an Army brat in Columbus, GA, before moving to Orlando, FL, at 16. Years later, she had to navigate the many challenges of single motherhood. Chief among those challenges, for her, was a search for purpose, especially now that she found herself alone with her child after her parents moved back to their native Puerto Rico.

She decided to attend Southern New Hampshire University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources Management and Services. Along the way, she discovered her passion for business, marketing, and people development—and she had a hunger to succeed in her career beyond what most around her would ever dream of.

After leaving a fulfilling HR job, a friend in Orlando suggested that Veronica earn a real estate license while transitioning jobs. She got her license a day after 9/11, and it was only in 2004, following a divorce, that she considered a serious career in the industry. With $17,000 in the bank, she decided to go into real estate full-time.

Listen in as Veronica does a deep dive into her storied real estate career, beginning with Avalon Town Center Realty in 2001, followed by RE/MAX, then Zillow, where her visionary leadership took her team to great heights.

Finally, she found what she believes to be her ideal professional role leading a team with eXp. She sets herself apart from most realtors in the country and pays it forward by teaching and inspiring others walking the same path.

    Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:

    ● [06:06] How single motherhood led Veronica to explore the world of business

    ● [10:20] Why Veronica was determined to achieve more than most

    ● [13:44] How Veronica leaped from HR to real estate

    ● [18:54] Joining Avalon Town Center Realty

    ● [21:46] Why Veronica chose RE/MAX

    ● [28:01] Veronica’s days with Zillow

    ● [37:57] The top quality of great leaders

    ● [41:14] What Veronica loves about working with eXp

    ● [48:51] Veronica’s advice to new agents

    Key Quotes by Veronica:

    ● Being vulnerable and honest and showing up authentically is powerful.

    ● Leaders have a burning desire to continue to grow, not just financially but personally.

    ● You might be winning today, but what kind of leader will you be when you’re not winning?

    ● Be brave. Be bold. Do what makes you feel good, and don’t hold back just because other people expect you to.
