Sandy Bond was still a little girl when she learned how quickly everything can be taken away — and by the time she was a teenager, grief had already reshaped who she was. David Ayala grew up in Houston's Fifth Ward, in a home where church stopped when he was six and the arguing didn't. By twelve he was in a detention center in an orange jumpsuit, bracing for exactly what his mother would say when she came. She said something else entirely.
