Fabio Fiori from Tatooine Times and I do a joint interview with renowned artist Greg Hildebrandt on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Shadows of the Empire, the ‘movie without a movie,’ launched by Lucasfilm in the spring of 1996. There was a novel by Steve Perry for Del Rey, a comic adaptation by Dark Horse, a video game for the Nintendo 64, a toy line by Kenner, a Soundtrack and of course, a Topps Card set.

Greg, and his brother Tim, were tapped to produce 100 paintings for their portion of the event for Topps. The set would debut in September of that year and their turnaround time for completion of the work was only 4 and a half months. But short deadlines were nothing new to the brothers and they turned out an amazing set of paintings used for the card set.

In addition to portions of this interview, Fabio will have a number of special articles and interviews covering the full spectrum of the 25th Anniversary of Shadows of the Empire that will appear on Tatooine Times starting the week of May 10th.

Very excited to have Fabio Fiori join me again on the program, as we do this preview of our upcoming conversation with artist Greg Hildebrandt. We had the opportunity to come together and talk with the famed artist about the work the Hildebrandt brothers did on the Topps set back in 1996, this year celebrating its 25th Anniversary. As Fabio is so great to talk to, I decided to release part of our conversation as a preview episode for next week’s show.

Very happy to have on the program author John Scoleri, who talks about his Star Wars journey and the effort to bring the first comprehensive Art of Ralph McQuarrie books to life. Released in 2007 ‘The Art of Ralph McQuarrie by John Scoleri and Stan Stice was a mammoth 12’’x 15’’ 400 page tome, limited to just 2000 copies, which was the culmination of an incredible amount of work, passion, belief in the cause, and a little good luck thrown in for good measure. The FORCE was certainly with them. A lot of what you can find today on shelves concerning McQuarrie’s work owes a lot to the groundwork John and Stan laid with that first book.

John Scoleri and Stan Stice began working with Ralph McQuarrie in 1996. In 2006 they launched Dreams and Visions Press to publish The Art of Ralph McQuarrie. John has gone on to write several more books on McQuarrie, including The Art of Ralph McQuarrie: ARCHIVES (Dreams and Visions Press, 2015). He also produced the DVDs Ralph McQuarrie: Illustrator (2002) and Caroline Munro: First Lady of Fantasy (2004). In 2019 he launched Cimarron Street Books to publish the magazine bare•bones and the collected works of award-winning author/screenwriter David J. Schow. He is currently at work on Latent Images (Dreams & Visions Press, 2021), a photographic retrospective of Night of the Living Dead (1968).

We catch up with Curtis Smith from the Instagram account Star Wars Poetry.

He was one of my first guests when i started the podcast portion of this venture two years ago, and when he recently mentioned on his channel that he wanted to make the rounds again, i wanted to get my name on the list. since that first foray of his that combined his short style haiku and limericks, along with collaborations with sketch card artists, making an awesome use of the Instagram format, he has added video readings and reels on Instagram which are another and creative way to repurpose the content. We had a great conversation, he of course had some poems to read and i think has some great insight into using the social platforms, not only for a way to grow the audience, but cultivate an active one. It’s the support and feedback from our audiences that help all of us keep doing what we do.

Jason is a sketch card artist who’s done work for Topps, Upperdeck, Cryptozoic, Attic, Artists Assemble Productions and Viceroy Cards and has done some of his own independent comic series work as the founder of Themis Comix. Born and raised in Colorado Springs, he is an artist who works with a variety of mediums including marker (copics), watercolor, gouache, pencil, color pencil, ink, oil, acrylic, airbrush, and digital.

He is the founder of Themis Comix and has his own comic series ‘Baron Von Saturday’s Tales From Beyond,’ working with author Christopher M. Salas. Other co-created works include the ‘Abigail: Curses and Demons’ series. Jason does it all: penciler, inker, letter, co-plotter, editor, designer and writer. He has been published in various publications ranging from traditional Super Hero comics to Horror and Sci Fi.

The busiest person in the galaxy and one of my favorite people to follow in the Star Wars community, Mark Newbold of Fantha Tracks, returns to the show to give us his take on the past year and what’s to come.

Long time listeners may remember he first appeared way back on in 2019, just as he made his debut in the first season of the Mandalorian as a member of the Bounty Hunter guild run by Greef Karga. Dominic is a Los Angeles based actor with more than 20 years in the biz and more than 100 credits to his name. He has appeared in such properties as 9-1-1, SuperStore and NCIS: Los Angeles. In 2020 he starred in the movie ‘Anonymous Killers.’

Joey Shiver, better known to most as Dub Mentality is a freelance writer for Beckett Media and a blogger who takes a great approach to talk about collecting and, well, life in general. His personal stories, woven with information on sports card sets, to me, really breaks it all down and takes our hobby back to the basics. In a time where we see a lot of attention both good and bad being focused on collecting, pricing, selling and speculation, I think it’s good to get another perspective and voice from the sports card world as we all move into new collecting territory.
