Michale Kidd Gilchrist was born in Philadelphia and was recognized as one of the best players in America attending St Patrick High School in 2010 with Kyrie Irving in New Jersey. He attended Kentucky and in his first season led the team to a national championship, then declared for the NBA draft. He was drafted #2 and played 10 years in Charlotte. He has a stutter and has embarked on a national stuttering awareness tour.
The NBA veteran regularly takes time to educate others and help those in need of guidance about the challenges with stuttering. He is bringing out awareness, patience and understanding about a misunderstood topic.
“I remember a time when I didn’t want anyone to know about my stutter. When I entered speech therapy at the University of Kentucky, I told my therapist that I didn’t want anyone to know,” he said. “Today, I see my stutter as a gift that I have embraced, and I want to help others who stutter and those who are getting into the field of speech-language pathology.”To learn more about booking Coach Matt Doherty to speak at your next event or help you elevate your leadership game, visit dohertycoaching.com today.

Drawing from his years of experience coaching basketball at a high level and being around great winners like Michael Jordan, Coach Doherty breaks down why setting expectations and establishing culture will beat talent any day.

No matter what level of success you reach in your leadership journey, you can always get knocked down. Oftentimes for leaders, the bigger the title, the greater potential for a much harder fall. As a leader, however, it’s your mandate to show grace, humility and dignity in your lowest moments.

Every basketball player who’s stepped on the court in an open gym or the hot unforgiving blacktop knows how important it is to win games and hold court. If your team won, you’d get to stay on the court and challenge the next group.
But if you lost, that meant you had to sit out for at least one game, and maybe more depending on how many other teams were waiting. And the feeling of losing sat deep in your stomach until it was your turn to get back on the court.
In today’s episode of the Rebound Podcast, host Matt Doherty talks about some of the life lessons he learned while growing up playing basketball in East Meadow, NY, just thirty minutes outside of New York City. It was there that Matt learned toughness, how to be coachable, and how to succeed on your merits and nothing else.

Athletes, especially those at the top of their game, are generally regarded as physically gifted people that can perform feats that most of us only dream about. Running, jumping, catching and more are all common traits of the best athletes, and it’s how many of them define themselves and their lives.
So what happens when an athlete is stripped of their ability to walk?
In 1981, Joe Reto was coming off an All-ACC performance as a sophomore as a DH and first baseman for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. A star baseball player but a standout athlete in general, Joe had dreams of playing in the majors.

When Michael Jordan reinvested in North Carolina by buying a majority stake in the Charlotte Bobcats (as they were known at the time), he knew he had to have a leadership team around him that he could trust. That's why he brought in one of his good friends and business partners, Fred Whitfield.
In his 17 years as the leader of the Hornets, Fred oversaw the return of the Hornets brand and imagery, the hosting of an NBA All-Star game, as well as both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. Just this fall, Fred decided to resign from the Hornets. With the new majority owners taking over, Fred feels it is a good time to step away.
Fred Whitfield and Coach Matt Doherty have a candid and in-depth discussion about his time at the Hornets. Fred also talks about the path he traveled to get there which included stops at Nike, the Washington Wizards and the Jordan Brand. He talks about how important his mentors were to him, particularly Phil Knight of Nike, and how best to motivate your team.
