Is It Wrong to Read Your Bible Out of Habit? Religion vs. Relationship With God

    Season 5, Episode 4 | Faith, Spirituality & Religiosity Series (2 of 6)

Have you ever skipped your Bible reading or meditation and spent the rest of the day waiting for something to go wrong? Or maybe you're not sure about God at all, and the reason has more to do with a person than with God. In part two of the faith series, Julie explores what it means to know God secondhand, through a habit, a feeling, or someone else's story, and walks through Recognition and Release using her own story, from a fourth-grade devotional to raising her own kids.

Is it wrong to read my Bible out of habit?

No. Habits aren't the problem. The question is what the habit is doing for you. If it's how you stay close to God, that's relationship. If it's how you stay safe from God, or prove something to the people around you, that's religiosity dressed up as relationship.

Why do I feel so resistant to God?

Sometimes it's because of something God did. But often, if we're honest, it's because of something a person did, or something we heard happened to someone else. The anger may be completely right. The question is whether it's aimed at the right one.

How can I tell if my faith practice is religion or relationship?

Notice what you feel when you miss it. If it feels like you broke a rule, that's religiosity. If it feels like you miss Him, that's relationship. A second test comes from Matthew 6: would you still do it if no one ever knew?

    Key takeaways from this episode:

    • A spiritual practice is only as healthy as the reason behind it. Reading your Bible, meditating, or going to church isn't the problem. What matters is whether you're doing it to be close to God or to stay safe from Him.
    • You can know God secondhand in three ways. Through the doing (religiosity), through the feeling (spirituality), and through hearsay (someone else's story). None of them is the same as knowing Him yourself.
    • Your practice may be driven by more than one motive. Finish the sentence "I read my Bible because..." Is it to stay safe, to belong, to be right, to feel covered, or to be with Him? Most people find a mix, and noticing it is the first step, not a verdict.
    • What you feel when you miss it tells you what's driving it. "I broke a rule" points to religiosity. "I miss Him" points to relationship. And if you'd stop the practice once no one could see it, that's worth noticing too.
    • Long relationships drift quietly, including with God. Drift hides inside routine, so showing up isn't the same as connecting.
    • We often judge God on gossip. Many beliefs about God come from what a person did, what happened to someone we love, or what we absorbed in childhood. Knowing the stories isn't the same as knowing Him.
    • Your anger may be right, and still be aimed at the wrong one. Holding people accountable for harm done in God's name is different from holding God responsible for it.
    • Release doesn't mean giving up your practice or your discernment. You can set down the fear-based contract and keep the reading. You can set down a secondhand verdict and still stay wise about what hurt you.

  • EP3-S5 Religiosity vs. Spirituality vs. Faith: What's the Difference?

Many of us have done all the right faith things (the reading, the church attendance, the devotionals, the routine) and still felt flat. Others have felt something real and tender, something hard to name or defend, and wondered whether it even counts as faith. When listeners chose the Season 5 topics, faith and spirituality came in first by a wide margin, so Julie Holly moved the series to the front of the season.

In this opening episode, Julie shares why she hesitated to create this content for so long, having been raised in an environment that valued knowing God intellectually far more than sensing Him. She then walks through her own lifelong recalibration with faith, from a four-year-old's pure yes to God, through religiosity, a head-on collision with a drunk driver, an abusive first marriage, and raising her own kids, to the steady trust she lives from today. Along the way, she uses the five stages of the Identity-Level Recalibration pathway as the map for the next six weeks.

Julie Holly speaks from a Christian perspective and names Jesus as her fixed point, and she's clear that she isn't here to convince or condemn anyone. If you don't share her faith but are curious about the role of faith and spirituality in your life, you're genuinely welcome here.

What's the difference between faith, religiosity, and spirituality?

Religiosity reaches for connection by doing the right things, and spirituality reaches for it by feeling the right things; faith is neither. Faith is trust in a person, and trust isn't something you perform or manufacture a sensation of, it's something you place in someone.

Julie describes religiosity and spirituality as two practices carrying the same ache. One overcompensates on the doing (read the verse, attend church, complete the devotional), and the other overcompensates on the feeling (meditate enough, find the right crystal, say the right affirmation). Both are reaching for something real, and neither is wrong to be reaching. Julie calls living from trust vertical alignment: orienting your identity toward a fixed point instead of constantly negotiating on the horizontal plane of what's at eye level.

Why do I feel disconnected from God even though I'm doing everything right?

Because doing the practice was never the same as being in the relationship. You can recite the same prayer a thousand times and never once feel your heart in the room.

Julie is clear that reading the Bible, going to church, and spending time with God still matter; they were never the problem. The problem comes when doing them quietly becomes the proof of connection, and faith slowly turns into a checklist.

Does being angry at God mean my faith failed?

No. More often, it means religiosity failed, because religiosity is transactional ("if I do X, God owes me Y") and it was never built to hold anything.

Julie shares the night she hit rock bottom in her first marriage, driving down Highway 99 in the rain, feeling betrayed by her husband and by God after checking every box. The good girl who never cussed found out what was really in her heart and cussed God out. That moment, she says, is where she met God for real, not cleaned up and not earning her way back, and God met her there anyway.

The five stages, and the question Julie asks at each

Recognition: you cannot heal what you cannot see.
Where have you been doing the practice without being in the relationship, or floating in a feeling with nothing underneath to hold you?

Release: what you've been carrying longer than necessary can be set down, with honor, not shame.
What's the deal you've made? Where have you been telling yourself that if you're good enough, God (or the universe) owes you something specific?

Reclamation: clarity returns, not as something new, but as recognition of what was always true.
Where might peace already be closer than you think, not as resolved theology, but as a moment where something in you softened?

Reinforcement: alignment doesn't hold in theory; it has to be practiced in the ordinary moments of real life.
Where do you expect reinforcement to mean you've arrived? What would it look like to show up again today, exactly as you are, without grading it?

Renewed Momentum: the part nobody is selling you, because it cannot be sold. It can only be lived.
Where is proof already quietly building in your life, even if you haven't named it yet?

A thought to carry with you

Some recalibrations happen in a single conversation; others take decades. Julie's recalibration with faith ran from age four to nearly 50, and she never walked away from her faith. She stayed in orbit. What stays fixed is the center, who you were created to be. If your own recalibration feels slow or crooked, pace was never the point. You're not behind.

  • EP2-S5 What Identity-Level Recalibration Is (And Why It Matters)

Two episodes back from sabbatical, Julie catches herself feeling the old pull toward performance, the pressure to hit every beat "correctly," and decides to name it out loud instead of hiding it. That honesty becomes the doorway into this episode's real subject: a full walkthrough of the Identity-Level Recalibration pathway, the five stages that carry you from awareness to renewed momentum, told through Julie's own real-time experience and a poem her daughter brought home from school.

What's really behind the question "what's next?"

For a lot of high-capacity humans, "what's next?" isn't really about the future, it's a sign you've quietly crossed a finish line and gotten bored. Julie hears this question constantly from the high achievers she works with, and she's come to see it less as ambition and more as antsiness: an old high-performance pattern asking to stay in motion, even before you know where you're headed.

If I'm not challenging myself, what happens to the energy I bring to life?

Nothing happens to it. It's still yours, it's just been tied to proving and performing for so long that you haven't felt what it's like to spend it on anything else. Julie names this as one of the questions she hears most often from clients, and points to what's underneath it: a belief that your value depends on always directing your energy toward the next challenge, which is exactly the kind of belief that recognition brings into view so it can be released.

What are the five stages of the Identity-Level Recalibration pathway?

Identity-Level Recalibration moves in five stages that feed into each other in a circle, not a straight line: Recognition, Release, Reclamation, Reinforcement, and Renewed Momentum.

    • Recognition is awareness, plain and simple. Julie calls it 80% of the whole process, because you cannot heal what you cannot see. You'll know it's happening when small things start bothering you more than they should, or when you catch yourself asking, "What's wrong with me?"
    • Release is the understanding that what you've been carrying longer than necessary can be set down, with honor, not shame. Letting go of a role isn't abandonment, it's alignment. Julie walks through her own release of the belief that it isn't safe to rest, rooted in childhood programming she's only fully recognized in the past couple of years.
    • Reclamation is when clarity returns, not as something new, but as recognition of what was always true. It isn't a glow up or becoming somebody. It's stopping the performance of somebody you already stopped being. Julie reads Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem "We Wear the Mask" here, brought home from her daughter's English class, as a picture of the mask reclamation lets you finally set down.
    • Reinforcement is staying in the middle long enough for the work to hold, especially hard for high performers who love new beginnings and struggle with the "baking" phase in between. Julie's anchor question for the middle: "What's on the other side?" She also connects this stage to the emotional cycle of change from Crucial Conversations, informed optimism, the trough of despair, and the choice to keep going until you reach informed optimism on the other side.
    • Renewed Momentum is what's waiting on the other side of that middle: a drive that no longer needs an audience, doesn't need to perform to prove worth, and doesn't require earning belonging or status.

  • EP1/S5 Back From Sabbatical: Rest, Doing vs. Being, and What's Coming in Season 5

    Season 5, Episode 1 (Episode 945)

After 944 episodes and six years of daily content, Julie stepped away from the podcast for a sabbatical. In this reunion episode, she shares what that season of rest actually revealed, why doing and being are not the same thing, and what's ahead for Season 5, including how you can vote on the topics that matter most to you.

What's the difference between a human being and a human doing?

Being human means your worth isn't based on your output. It's based on who you're showing up as, not what you're producing. Doing is still allowed, it's just not what proves you belong.

Julie unpacks this distinction through her own family of origin, where performance and productivity were the measure of worth, and connects it to why stepping away from a daily podcast schedule triggered an identity crisis before it revealed anything else. She uses two picture-clear metaphors, a dahlia seed that can't grow into an oak tree, and a chocolate cake that can't happen if you bake it with chili powder instead of cocoa, to show why what's rooted at the identity level always determines what grows above it.

Is there really a mental health crisis?

Julie doesn't answer this one in the abstract. She shares that 75% of her household has been navigating an ADHD journey this past year, including her son, and that recalibrating 20 to 30 year old assumptions about what ADHD actually is has become one of the most important things she's done recently, personally and as a parent. She's inviting her son onto the podcast to talk about ADHD and teenagers, and bringing Steve back on to talk about what it's like for adults to get diagnosed later in life.

    Inside this episode

    • Why the sabbatical felt "incredibly foreign," and the identity loss Julie faced the first Monday she didn't sit down to create
    • What actually happens when a high achiever's capacity opens up, and the temptation to fill it right back up with something else
    • Leaving the 4AM club and what that release revealed about rigor, restriction, and rest
    • The root-level work: how success amplifies whatever is already at the identity level, for better or worse
    • Julie's own recalibration around alcohol, and how healing at the identity level freed her from needing to prove she belonged
    • Doing vs. being, and why this distinction lands differently depending on generation, especially for fellow Gen Xers
    • A look at the 15 topics Julie is considering for Season 5, and an invitation to vote on the ones you want covered
    • Why Julie joined Rotary this summer, and what it revealed about the kind of community she'd been missing
    • The launch of Julie's new community, a lower-commitment space for people between the cohort and 1:1 coaching
    • What's ahead: new episodes every Wednesday, with occasional bonus episodes featuring Steve, Julie's son, or her daughter

  • Encore: The Other Side of a Year-Long Recalibration

366 episodes. One year of intentional inner work. Here's what actually happened — and what completing something this big does to a person.

    This is the encore.

The episode you're listening to right now was recorded the moment the final episode of a year-long recalibration project was finished — raw, unscripted, and unpolished. It's what completion actually sounds like when you've done the real work.

Over the past year, 366 episodes were produced — scripted, researched, and built with intention — covering the full arc of Identity-Level Recalibration: what it is, how it lives in everyday life, how it shows up under leadership and responsibility, and how it integrates into who you're becoming.

This episode is the other side of that.

    In this conversation, you'll hear:

    • What it actually took to build a year-long, daily, scripted podcast — from scratch — while navigating one of the most personally difficult years of life
    • Why starting before it was ready, before the name was right, before the cover was good, was the only path to getting here
    • What the recalibration process looked like in real time — not as a concept, but as a lived experience
    • Why rest isn't regression — and what it looks like to let capacity open instead of immediately refilling it
    • What's next: a deliberate, intentional year-long project designed to produce both personal inner work and new intellectual property

If you've been waiting to start something because you're embarrassed about what it'll look like at first — this episode is for you.

If you've been pushing through when your body and life are asking for a pause — this episode is for you.

If you've ever wondered what's on the other side of a year of showing up for yourself — this is it.

    TODAY'S RECALIBRATION

    Ask yourself:

    • What have I completed — fully, not almost — that I haven't yet honored?
    • Where am I waiting for permission to rest before I refill?
    • What would I start today if I gave myself permission to be a beginner?

  • #366 You Are Known, Held, and Called Forward — Still

The world puts us on a conveyor belt from the moment we arrive. Recalibration is the decision to step off — not to build a better version, but to unearth who you already truly are. Episode 366. The final Sunday. The commission that doesn't end when the season does.

From the moment we arrived, someone was measuring us. Developmental milestones. School timelines. Career progressions. The whole architecture of a human life, pre-mapped and prescribed — a conveyor belt that moves whether we chose to step onto it or not.

The conveyor belt was never built for someone with a one-in-four-hundred-quadrillion probability of existence. Psalm 139 knew this. Identity-Level Recalibration was built on it.

This episode is the Vertical Alignment close of Week 16 — and the final episode of a 366-episode year. Rooted in Psalm 139 and Philippians 1:6, EP 366 holds the deepest truth of everything the season produced.

What we hold in this episode:

    • Why the conveyor belt shapes not just behavior but our sense of what we are for
    • The one-in-four-hundred-quadrillion reality of your specific, unrepeatable existence
    • Psalm 139 as the theological root of identity-level recalibration
    • Why the year's work was excavation, not construction
    • Philippians 1:6 as the commission: he who began a good work in you will carry it on

This isn't self-improvement. It never was. The recalibration this year was the long, patient work of shedding what the conveyor belt deposited and returning to the person who was always there — knit together, known completely, held through every drift and every return.

The season is completing. The work is not. He who began it will carry it on.

  • #365 Living Recalibrated Looks Like This in Real Relationships

A year of internal recalibration doesn't stay internal. This episode widens the lens to the full relational landscape and names what living recalibrated actually looks like in the relationships you're already in.

Before anything else today — look around. At the relationships. At what the people in your life have been quietly receiving all year without knowing why.

This episode is the Horizontal Alignment close of Week 16: Living Recalibrated. Saturday in the final week holds the full relational landscape of a year — and asks us to see, without grading or cataloging, what identity-level change looks like when it's expressed in the people around us.

What we name in this episode:

    • Why a year of internal recalibration moves into the texture of ordinary relational moments
    • What the relational evidence of integration actually looks like — quieter than expected
    • Why the most honest evidence is the return that was different, not the relationship that went perfectly
    • What it means that the relationships don't need an announcement — they've been living with the change
    • Why the relationships don't need a catalog. They need your continued presence.

This isn't about the dramatic relational evidence. The most honest expression of living recalibrated is the texture of ordinary moments that has changed. The breakfast table that costs less. The room that breathes differently. The return from drift that arrived less defended than before.

  • #364 This Isn't an Ending. It's Just Daily Life Now.

The season is completing. The work is not. This episode closes the final weekday arc by naming the only momentum that lasts — not the drive of urgency, but the quiet forward motion of a life being lived from the inside out.

This is the last weekday episode of a 366-episode year. And it closes not with a conclusion but with a continuation — because that's the most honest expression of everything the season was designed to produce.

This episode is the Renewed Momentum stage of Week 16: Living Recalibrated. Friday in the final week names the momentum that doesn't require a new container to continue — the quiet, steady forward motion of a life that is now, simply, different on the inside.

What we name in this episode:

    • Why the momentum of continuity is more durable than the momentum of urgency
    • What it feels like when forward motion is released by alignment rather than generated by pressure
    • Why continuity is not the consolation prize for missing the finish line — it is the finish line
    • What it means that the next structured season is simply your life
    • How to receive the forward motion without immediately turning it into a new project

This isn't about maintaining the work or finding the next commitment. Identity-Level Recalibration was designed to produce a person for whom the pathway runs on its own — who recognizes drift before it's named, returns without relearning, and moves forward without an engine. The season is completing. That person keeps going.

  • #363 The Practice Doesn't Stop — It Just Becomes Your Life

There's a moment when recalibration stops being something you do and becomes the way you move. This episode names that transition — and why the dissolution of the practice into daily life is not the end of the work. It's what the work was always for.

At some point this season, the recalibration process stopped requiring conscious engagement. The recognition came before it was called for. The return from drift initiated before the drift was named. The grounded response arrived before the deliberation did.

This episode is the Reinforcement stage of Week 16: Living Recalibrated. Thursday in the final week names the transition from discipline to identity — the moment the practice stops being something we do and becomes the way we move.

What we name in this episode:

    • What the transition from practice to identity actually feels like from the inside
    • Why the absence of effort is not the absence of the work
    • How the ILR pathway was always designed to internalize — not to be carried
    • What it means that the body knows the return pathway before the mind names the drift
    • Why the dissolution of the practice into daily life is the fullest expression of the season's purpose

This isn't about maintaining the work through ongoing discipline. Identity-Level Recalibration was designed to become the unconscious architecture of daily life — the lens, not the practice. When it does that, it stops feeling like recalibration and starts feeling like the person. That's not the end of the journey. That's the journey becoming the road.

  • #362 You Were Always the One You Were Returning To

Every return this season led to the same place. This episode names the deepest reclamation of the year — not a skill or a new identity, but the self who was always there, waiting to be returned to.

Every week this season, the Reclamation stage asked the same question: what's true about who I am that I've stopped being able to access? Week after week, the return led to the same center — not a new version, not a constructed identity, but the self that was always there before the performance started.

This episode is the Reclamation stage of Week 16: Living Recalibrated. Wednesday in the final week holds the deepest recognition of the entire season: you were always the one you were returning to.

What we name in this episode:

    • Why the ILR pathway uncovers identity rather than building it
    • The critical distinction between broken and obscured — and why it changes everything
    • What it means that every return this season led to the same place
    • Why the growth was real and the growth was homecoming — simultaneously
