Carmen opens with comments about a Georgia Senate race that may be a bell-weather. A Baptist pastor from the iconic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, is running as the only Democrat in a three-way contest in the special election to fill a U.S. Senate seat left vacant when Sen. Johnny Isakason resigned at the end of last year. The special election takes place the same day as the 2020 general election and if none of the three candidates in the race get 50% of the vote, the two highest vote getters will face off in a run-off election January 5, 2021. Why make so much of a Senate race in Georgia? Because Rev. Dr. Warnock’s theology and philosophy are on the extreme left edge – which may mean we’re witnessing the full unbuckling of America’s Bible Belt. **

Matthew Hawkins is back to talk about several speeches at the RNC including Vice President Mike Pence’s and Sister Dede Byrne. They also talk about why on the Republicans are talking about abortion and how a Biden administration could be expected to erase recent pro-life policy progress.

What’s the power of a name? Read Exodus 3 to lay a foundation for this conversation. Then consider the power of the name of Jesus. And then consider all the people in the Bible whose names are changed.  When, by whom and for whom were you named? Do you have a namesake? Have you ever changed your name? Why, or why not?  Do you go by the name you were given at Baptism? Why or why not? Peter and Saul are fully grown men when Jesus gives them each a different name. Why did he do that? What’s the power of a name? 

Carmen offers all this foundational fodder for a conversation about several headline news stories about the changing of a name. First is the change of the name of the ski resort whose name makes offensive reference to Native American women, then the football team in the nation’s capital which is now simply called the Washington Football team until they settle on a new name, and the debate in Cleveland over the name of their major league baseball team.  It leads us to a consideration of how the name of something affects us – and others. Carmen invites us all to pause and consider the name of our town, our team, our mascot, our park, or our club. Who could be offended by that? Is that worthy of a consideration of a change of name?

Carmen has a conversation with Bill English about changes to the list of companies that make up the Dow Industrial Average and then they discuss what makes for a transcendentally good business – a business that’s not only profitable but good for community flourishing.

Somebody at dinner last night noted that Sean Connery turned 90. That led to a conversation about favorite Connery roles (Carmen’s offerings: The Hunt for Red October or opposite Harrison Ford in the Raider’s of the Lost Ark series) but for most, the answer was something from the James Bond franchise.  There was Connery’s portrayal of .007 in everything from Dr. No, Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, Diamonds are Forever, You Only Live Twice, to Never Say Never Again.  The Bond series, and Connery as James Bond, formed a generation. Stories have a formative power and the characters in those stories provide the forms of the character of a people.  James Bond bedded more than 55 women. What impact did that have on the value of marriage and the sanctity of sex for young adults in America watching from the early 1960’s? James Bond drank (martinis, shaken, not stirred), he smoked, he gambled and he had a license to kill. He became the prototypical spy and people love(d) him.  Boys wanted to be Bond and girls wanted to be with him. That’s the formative power of story and the shaping power of a character’s character – even if he’s fictional.  What story forms your character? For the Christian the answer is Christ.
