Carmen is concerned about the questions we’re not asking. While we’re being challenged today to answer forced choice questions between lives and livelihoods, Christians need to be asking the questions raised by passages like Matthew 6:25-34.  So, take some time today to look at the birds and consider the flowers. What do the wild things – and God’s care of them – tell us about His presence, goodness, and persistent grace? And what does it say about us that we worry over worldly things, lacking faith in the God we see evidence of all around? Do we not know that we are of infinitely greater value to God than the grass? Let us seek first the Kingdom of God today – and His righteousness – pursuing His presence, inviting His wisdom, reveling in His Word and see if God’s not faithful to add everything He knows we need as well.

As U.S. unemployment claims skyrocketed in April to 14.7%, the Treasury Secretary said we should all expect that number to rise further. Things are not yet getting better, they’re actually still getting worse. Add unemployment to long periods of isolation and a nation already addicted to drugs, alcohol and violence and you’ve got a recipe for what researches call “deaths of despair” – namely suicide and overdose. Isolation is causing people to lose their grip – on their own emotions and on destructive behaviors. Carmen talks with Dr. Linda Mintle about mental health and the pandemic. They address concerns related to domestic abuse and how to push yourself to stay motivated. 

In the second half, Dr. David Aikman shares a story of his mother on VE Day 75 years ago. They also discuss China, recent protests and arrests in Hong Kong, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Covid speech about reopening the British economy.

You likely noticed that no shows were posted last week. Last week as the Faith Radio Spring Share fundraiser and Carmen was on air a lot – but not doing what she normally does. But, she’s back!

Today’s program includes conversations with Dr. Zach Jenkins about Covid19, how it progresses, emerging theories and the Plandemic video. They discuss the need for more data in order to continuing discovering trends that will lead to treatments and ultimately, a vaccine. Until then, there’s a lot we don’t know and can’t control. Those uncomfortable realities lead some to grasp at conspiracy theories in order to have someone to blame.

In the second half, Carmen talks with author Diannne Jago from DeeplyRootedMag.com about her new book, “A Holy Pursuit.” In a world that tells to follow our dreams, Carmen and Dianne discuss God’s plans for us and how we joyfully submit to those plans even when that means the surrender of of what we once dreamed.

Adam Holz from Focus on the Family’s PluggedIn joins Carmen for a conversation about what NOT to watch (Netflix new “Never Have I Ever” series) and what TO watch, Jon Krasinky’s Some Good News on YouTube. Carmen and Ben Johnson talk about the importance of worldview as we make critical care decisions. When you have to decide who is going to get a ventilator, how are you going to make that determination. Come to find out, religious people make that decision based on the value of every human life – secular people make a utilitarian judgement about the relative value of those in need.

These findings are consistent with research showing that people who are not religious tend to prefer utilitarian solutions in a variety of moral dilemmas. This may in part be due to a lack of shared, formalized moral rules among the nonreligious, who are more likely to rely on personal philosophy and ethical principles when resolving moral quandaries. Religious believers, on the other hand, often rely on deeply ingrained moral rules and on guidance from religious leaders and texts. Religious people also may respond negatively to the idea of doctors “playing God” by choosing which patients should receive potentially life-saving treatments.

Carmen and Ben also discuss how humanity’s creative cooperative nature will rebuild the economy and then a story you’ll find hard to believe about the proposed seizure of university endowments.

Luke 1:17 reads, “And he [John the Baptist] will go on before the LORD, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the LORD.” 

Are we ready and if not, what does it look like to use this time to “make ready” as “a people prepared for the Lord”?

He joins Carmen again today to discuss what’s happening on the inside, how the prison-based campuses are adapting to the coronavirus, and how Gateway is resourcing other prison Chaplains across the country with resources to serve the incarcerated in this unique time.
