Chris Martin, manager of LifeWay’s social media, shares how one Facebook executive is helping churches not only access streaming technology but sent them the equipment they need to do it. They also discuss the emergence of coronavirus deep fake (videos) and “loot boxes,” and if you don’t know what they are and you have kids gaming online, you NEED to know!

Identity, belonging and purpose – the three big questions everyone is seeking to answer and the first one is foundational. Who am I? The identity issue is a big one today. Carmen talks with Peter Kapsner about a recently case where a woman wanted to be legally identified as sexually oriented toward chandeliers. Yes, lighting fixtures.  As crazy as that may sound, it brings into an issue of identity ideologies worthy of our consideration.

In the second half, Carmen talks with author and podcaster Christine Hoover about her new book, With All Your Heart. They discuss the overarching question of allegiance, false allegiances – including self allegiance – and how they corrupt our ability to love King Jesus with all our heart. Divided loyalties plague us all!  So how do we look at our own lives and then act according to our greatest love in a way that integrates life to faith?

Ben Johnson from Action.org engages the question of Muslim calls to prayer being broadcast during Ramadan over loudspeakers in one Minneapolis neighborhood as a religious accommodation during COVID19 shutdown. Ben open up several lines of conversation worthy of further consideration.  Ben and Carmen also discuss something we’ll just call Harvard v. Homeshooling.

Carmen talks with Bill English from BibleandBusiness.com about the realities for small businesses owners in the COVID19 shutdown. Bill talks candidly about his own experience of loss and grief. He reminds us of the story of Hannah who pours out her heart to God and see the death of a dream before the reality of what God had planned came into view. Business is built on the dreams of business owners so what happens when the environment changes so radically that some dreams must die in order for business to survive?

Professor John Inazu returns to talk with Carmen about Uncommon Ground: Living Faithfully in a World of Difference, a book project he co-conceived and edited with Tim Keller.  The book seeks to answer the question: How can Christians interact with those around us in ways that show respect to those whose beliefs are radically different AND remain faithful to the Gospel?

Governors are front and center these days. Many are holding daily briefings and their rhetoric ranges widely. Some inspire confidence and others fear. Words, tone and politics are all in view. The comments of two governors with respect to the role of God in the flattening of the COVID19 curve demonstrate the vast worldview divide in America. Governor Cuomo of New York said:

“The number is down because we brought the number down.” And emphasized: “God did not do that. Faith did not do that. Destiny did not do that. A lot of pain and suffering did that . . . That’s how it works. It’s math. And if you don’t continue to do that, you’re going to see that number go back up. And that will be a tragedy if that number goes back up.”

Conversely, Governor Abbot of Texas told the Prestonwood Church on Sunday that God is not only sovereign but expressed appreciation for the prayers of people faith in seeking God’s intervention.

“The growth of the coronavirus in Texas is slowing by people staying at home, by people reducing interaction with others…

God’s hand is working through the scientists across this great nation by coming out with fast, innovative drugs that would lead to therapeutic remedies…

Put your faith in God. God will bring you through this.”

Some Americans are following the lead of those who see God as without power or interest in all this. Others put their faith in God and lead others to do the same. Elections matter.

Carmen talks in this episode with Justin Giboney about the disproportionate impact COVID19 is having in U.S. prisons. They also discuss the role of mercy in our system of justice.

In the second half, Helen McIntosh and Blythe Daniel join Carmen to discuss their book, Mended: Restoring the Hearts of Mothers and Daughters.

Whatcha’ watchin?

Americans are watching a LOT of streaming and television content while under various Stay-at-home orders across the country. Carmen talks with Focus on the Family’s Adam Holz about movies being released directly to streaming platforms while theaters are closed. They also discuss who in the industry is capitalizing on the quarantine.

In the second half, Carmen welcomes Dr. Karen Swallow Prior back to the show to discuss a project with B&H to re-release several classic books with introductory material and discussion questions designed to help Christians read and respond to the content.
