Jordan also discusses his work with his church’s men’s ministry and the biggest problem he sees there—isolation. When men don’t have an outlet for deep conversations about their struggles or anxieties, he says, they can’t get free of them. It’s time for men to step up and get involved, both in their churches and in the lives of friends who need support and guidance.

Veterans transitioning out of lengthy military careers find themselves particularly vulnerable to a variety of life struggles, including depression, addiction, and suicide. Eric Brew knows this firsthand—when his 25-year military career ended right as he was going through a second divorce, he came close to taking his own life. But with God’s help, he found his way back from the abyss, and today, as the Georgia head of the Warriors Set Free ministry, he’s helping other struggling vets do the same. This week Eric has a frank and enlightening conversation about his own struggles and how they guide his ministry work, as well as the challenges of parenthood, what he’s learned from his military service, and the need to understand the “voice and character” of the Lord.

With Christmas almost upon us, this week The Redeemed turns its podcast over to Army veteran and ministry leader Jordan Thome, who offers his thoughts on Jesus’s statement “I am the light of the world” and what it means for us. It’s the season of gift-giving, and in this week’s podcast Ricky Smith, lead pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia, talks with Nate Dewberry about the most important gift any of us have ever received: God’s love, expressed through His son Jesus. Jeremy Simmons thought he had everything—he had a fast-paced career, he was “planting” a new church, he had a successful wife and two beautiful daughters. But when his marriage fell apart, he says he felt “like I was watching the towers of my life fall down around me.” Moving back in with his parents and starting over was a humbling experience, but when he stopped trying to control everything and just let God carry him, Jeremy saw a glimmer of hope. The stops on Thomas Cox’s physical fitness journey include four years as a quarterback for the UAB Blazers, seven as a college football coach, and the creation of both a health-oriented meal delivery service and a successful catering company. One of the biggest keys to his success, he says—in business, fitness, and life—is being willing to do hard things. “When hard tasks come up that are unknown,” he explains, “I want to go back to the hard things that I’ve done and say, ‘I did that, I know I can do this.’” In this week’s podcast with Nate Dewberry, Thomas talks about the challenges and joys of being a businessman, what he’s learned as a husband and father, and the times when men need to be a little selfish to keep themselves improving.
