The Reel Movie Critics

Boldly go where many reviews have gone before—but with a lot more sarcasm.

This week, we’re diving headfirst into Star Trek: First Contact, the film where the Borg prove once again that personal space is optional and assimilation is apparently a lifestyle choice. Join us as we break down Captain Picard’s intense grudge match, time travel chaos, and humanity’s most important historical moment… which almost gets ruined by space zombies.

We’ll talk about action, philosophy, questionable decisions, why they didn’t go to a different time in human history, and why this might just be one of the most “un-Star Trek” Star Trek movies—in the best way possible. Expect hot takes, deep dives, and at least one attempt to resist assimilation (no promises).

Resistance is futile… but listening to this episode definitely isn’t.

**********SPOILERS AHEAD**********

Scream 7 marks another bloody return for the long-running slasher franchise, proving that Ghostface still knows how to stalk both victims and genre conventions. This latest installment leans into the series’ signature formula—razor-sharp dialogue, meta-commentary about the state of horror, and elaborately staged kill sequences—while attempting to push the story forward.

The film balances nostalgia with reinvention, weaving in callbacks for longtime fans while introducing new characters who bring fresh dynamics to the chaos. As the mystery unfolds, the script toys with audience expectations, cleverly dissecting modern “legacy sequel” culture and the evolving rules of franchise storytelling.

Performance-wise, the cast brings emotional weight to the carnage, grounding the film in themes of trauma, survival, and the burden of being tied to a violent legacy. Ghostface remains as chilling as ever, with inventive chase scenes and suspenseful set pieces that rank among the franchise’s most intense moments. While some twists may feel familiar to longtime viewers, the film’s pacing and commitment to suspense keep the tension high through its final act.

The opening sequence is particularly effective, setting a tense and brutal tone that signals higher stakes from the start, but does it hold up to the previous installments?  Join myself, The Psycho Nerd, and Lord Scuba-Cabra as we dissect this new installment into the world of Scream!

In this episode, we head back to the Quick Stop to break down Clerks, the indie classic that launched Kevin Smith’s career and changed ‘90s independent filmmaking forever. Shot in black and white on a shoestring budget, this raw, profanity-laced comedy follows Dante and Randal through one very long day of customers, conversations, and complete chaos.

We dive into the film’s sharp, rapid-fire dialogue, its unapologetic slacker philosophy, and how Kevin Smith turned everyday retail misery into endlessly quotable comedy. From debates about Star Wars contractors to awkward relationship drama, we explore why Clerks still resonates with anyone who’s ever worked a dead-end job and questioned their life choices before lunch.

Was it lightning in a bottle? Does it still hold up? And how did this small convenience store story spark an entire View Askewniverse? Grab a cup of coffee (you’re not even supposed to be here today!) and join us as we revisit one of the most influential indie comedies of all time.
