The Reel Movie Critics

This week on The Reel Movie Critics, we’re traveling back to the year 1981 to take a closer look at Terry Gilliam’s cult classic Time Bandits. We break down the film’s wild imagination, dark humor, and Monty Python–inspired charm, while exploring how its absurd fantasy world balances comedy with surprisingly heavy themes about greed, authority, and fate.

From Kevin’s accidental journey with a band of time-hopping dwarves to the unforgettable set pieces and iconic villains, we discuss what still works, what feels dated, and why Time Bandits continues to hold a special place in cult cinema history. Is it a childhood classic, a surreal satire, or both? Tune in as we revisit this imaginative adventure and decide where it ranks among Gilliam’s most memorable films.

Join myself and the Psycho Nerd as we talk about a film that was a huge part of our childhood, but does the nostalgia still hold up?

This week on The Reel Movie Critics, for its 30th anniversary we're looking at From Dusk Till Dawn, a cult favorite from director Robert Rodriguez that’s best known for taking a hard left turn halfway through its runtime.

The film starts out as a gritty crime thriller, following two outlaw brothers on the run, before completely reinventing itself into a full-on supernatural action horror movie. That genre shift is either going to hook you instantly or completely throw you off, and that’s really where most of the conversation around this movie lives.

From Dusk Till Dawn is messy, stylish, and undeniably bold. It’s the kind of movie that sparks debate, which makes it a great fit for The Reel Movie Critics — whether you see it as a cult classic or a fascinating misfire depends on how much you’re willing to go along for the ride.

So join myself, Lord Scuba, and the Psycho Nerd as we cross the border and head into the Titty Twister for some shots of whiskey…..ok, there’s no whiskey, but we will give our perspective about this cult classic.  Oh, and Scuba didn’t dress the part this week.

As we start the new year, we couldn’t think of a better movie to bring in the New Year than the holiday classic…..Ghostbusters 2!!  Ok, so it really doesn’t have much of a holiday theme to it, but it does take place during the holidays, so if Die Hard can be a Christmas movie (it really isn’t), then so can Ghostbusters 2.  Join The Psycho Nerd, myself, and decorated Ghostbuster Lord-Scuba as we discuss and review the second movie in the Ghostbusters franchise!  And remember kids, who are you gonna call?  The Reel Movie Critics!!

Not gonna lie folks.....this was a HARD one to get through for all of us. In the holiday spirit, we (I actually) decided on watching something that only aired once and despite some best efforts, hasn't been wiped off the Earth yet. We are talking about The Star Wars Holiday Special. Only airing once yet has a bit of a cult following, but will that enfluence myself, The Psycho, and Lord Scuba to give it a good rating? Tune in and find out!!
