My name is Deanna, and I struggle with Performance Orientation.

What is performance orientation you may ask?

In a nutshell, It's the strong need to receive affirming validation for your work.

You know, the "Good jobs!" "You're amazing!" "You're awesome!" need to come in all the time in order for you to feel like you're doing good work.

If you're like me and struggle with this, then you probably see this need showing up in your parenting and in your business.

Let me tell you - it's now way to function. And it takes consistent reminders of how we are doing our work unto God and not unto men.

He's really the only one that we need to hear "well done" from, right?

Well, that's the way is should be, but I know all to well that that's not always the way it is.

Entrepreneurship is hard. Period.

But that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable, and it definitely doesn't mean it's not financially fulfilling.

I'm not sure of the first person who said, "Anything worth having takes work." But, I know it to be true. I'm thinking you know it too.

Raising amazing kids - hard.
Having an incredible marriage - hard.
Planning a vacation, and executing a vacation, with young children - hard.
Staying fit - hard (at least for me!).
Taking care of aging parents - hard.

Good things, great things, are challenging at times. But, the good parts make it all worthwhile.

Trauma is defined in the episode as “Any experience that overwhelms our ability to cope.”

I (Deanna) remember my daughter Kendall, at only 4 weeks old, contracting RSV from my 2-year old son.

I took her to the hospital an watched her struggle to breathe while a team of doctors and nurses crowded around her tiny body as she screamed. I was terrified. Was my baby going to die?

I sat at my daughter’s PICU bedside - staring at her monitors like I was watching Netflix - looking for decline. There was a ventilator sitting right next to her bed at the ready if she showed signs of distress.

Four grueling days later, I was told that she was going to be moved to a regular room in the hospital. I’ll never forget the nurse saying these words, “This is a good thing. Not every parent sees their child leave here.” [INSERT RELIEF HERE.]

This experience, for me, was an emotional TRAUMA. 

And in this episode, we’re chatting with Brittany Phillips, Trauma Informed Therapist, about overcoming the effects of trauma in our lives, and the number one way God desires to help us heal.
