The Regulated Eater: conversations on food, body image, nervous system regulation episodes

  • Can You Lose Weight While Healing Your Relationship With Food?

Can you lose weight while healing your relationship with food, or does intentional weight loss always lead back to restrictive eating, food guilt and old dieting patterns?

This is one of the more complicated questions in conversations about weight loss, intuitive eating and body image. If you've spent years dieting, working on your relationship with food or trying to move away from restriction, it's possible to still have preferences about your body while feeling unsure what to do with them.

In this episode of Becoming Wilder Co, we're exploring whether weight loss and a healthier relationship with food can coexist, why the way you pursue a physical goal matters just as much as the goal itself, and how to recognize when a preference is beginning to feel like an urgent requirement.

We'll talk about the difference between wanting your body to change and feeling that it needs to change before you can be confident or comfortable, why restriction can sometimes return in the language of wellness, and how to recognize when your relationship with food needs to take priority over intentional weight loss.

We'll also explore why healing your relationship with food doesn't require becoming completely indifferent to your appearance. The important question isn't simply whether you're allowed to want weight loss, but what happens to your relationship with yourself when you begin pursuing it.

  • Why You Can’t Think Your Way Out of Binge Eating

Why do you keep binge eating, overeating or emotionally eating even when you understand exactly why you’re doing it?Sometimes the problem isn’t that you don’t know enough. You already know restriction makes things worse. You know what your triggers are. You know the coping tools. You know what you want to do differently but when the binge urge becomes intense, all of that insight can suddenly feel very far away.In this episode of Becoming Wilder Co, we’re talking about why understanding binge eating and actually being able to interrupt a binge urge are two different skills.🌿 FREE MASTERCLASS: Why You Keep Struggling With Food Even When You Know What to DoIf this episode feels very familiar and you keep thinking, “I know what to do, so why am I still struggling with food?”, this free masterclass goes deeper into the bigger pattern behind bingeing, overeating, restriction and body image — and why more knowledge is not always the thing that creates change.Watch it free here: https://www.becomingwilder.co/free-masterclassIn this episode, we explore:• Why binge eating can feel automatic even when you “know better” • What happens when a binge urge becomes a whole-body state • Why insight and cognitive tools can become harder to access in the moment • The early “whispers” that can happen before an urge becomes overwhelming • Interoception and learning to notice your body’s signals • Why the goal is not necessarily to make every binge urge disappear • What progress can look like even if you still eat • How body-based support can create more room around an urge • Why “just sit with the urge” does not work for everyone • Why “listen to your body” can feel impossible after years of food rules • A simple one-minute practice to help you stay more present while eatingThe goal is not perfect control around food. It is more choice. If food has become one of the main ways your body finds relief, comfort, stimulation or escape, simply knowing what you “should” do may not be enough once the urge is already loud. Sometimes the work is learning to notice the pattern earlier, stay in relationship with yourself while it is happening, and slowly create more than one possible ending. If you want to go deeper beyond the free masterclass, "The Regulated Eater" is my 12-week programme for understanding the nervous-system, emotional and body-based patterns underneath bingeing, overeating, restriction and body-image struggles — so you can build more flexibility, capacity and trust around food without turning recovery into another set of rules.Subscribe to Becoming Wilder Co for conversations about binge eating, emotional eating, food freedom, body image, nervous system regulation and somatic therapy.#BingeEating #EmotionalEating #NervousSystemRegulation

  • Nervous System Regulation: Why Being Calm Isn’t the Goal

What does nervous system regulation actually mean? Despite what nervous system content online can make it seem like, regulation is not about being calm all the time.A regulated nervous system can feel anger, grief, fear, hunger, desire, stress and intensity. Regulation is about having enough flexibility and capacity to move through different nervous system states, respond to what is happening, and eventually find your way back.In this episode of Becoming Wilder Co, we’re talking about what nervous system regulation really looks like — beyond deep breathing, grounding exercises and trying to make every uncomfortable feeling disappear. We explore:• What nervous system regulation actually means• Why regulation is not the same thing as calm• Why anger, crying, fear or intensity do not automatically mean you’re dysregulated• How trying to stay calm can sometimes become emotional avoidance• The difference between nervous system capacity and nervous system control• What the window of tolerance means• Hyperarousal and hypoarousal• Why completion can be part of regulation• Why sometimes your body needs movement, tears, boundaries, rest or support rather than another calming exercise• How hunger and eating interact with nervous system regulation• What it actually means to become a “regulated eater”• How nervous system regulation relates to emotional eating, binge eating and body image• A simple question to help you work out what your nervous system needsInstead of asking, “How do I calm myself down?”, nervous system work can sometimes ask something very different:Do I need calming, control, completion or support?- Maybe you need a breath and a quiet room. - Maybe you need to move. Maybe you need to cry. - Maybe you need to say no. - Maybe you need another person. - Maybe you genuinely just need lunch.Regulation isn’t about becoming endlessly calm, emotionally flat or perfectly self-controlled. It’s about building more capacity to feel, respond, recover and come back to yourself. If food and body image are where your nervous system tends to get loudest, The Regulated Eater is my 12-week programme for understanding the nervous-system, emotional and body-based patterns underneath bingeing, overeating, restriction and body-image struggles — so you can build more choice, flexibility and trust around food without turning healing into another set of rules.https://www.becomingwilder.co/the-regulated-eater🌿 Subscribe to Becoming Wilder Co for conversations about nervous system regulation, somatic therapy, trauma, emotional eating, binge eating, body image and building a different relationship with your body.#NervousSystemRegulation #NervousSystem #SomaticTherapy

  • What Is Parts Work? Why Part of You Wants to Heal and Part Doesn’t

What is parts work, and why can one part of you desperately want to heal while another part keeps reaching for the exact patterns you’re trying to change?

In this episode of Becoming Wilder Co, we explore parts work — a therapeutic way of understanding the different inner parts that can hold different fears, needs, beliefs and protective strategies.

Maybe one part of you wants food freedom while another desperately wants rules. One part wants to stop bingeing while another reaches for food whenever life feels overwhelming. One part wants to trust your body while another believes controlling it is the only way to stay safe. One part wants to be seen while another wants to disappear.

Parts work gives us another way of understanding these contradictions: not as self-sabotage, lack of willpower or proof that you don’t really want to change, but as different parts of you trying to protect you in different ways.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • What parts work actually is
    • The connection between parts work and Internal Family Systems (IFS)
    • Why different parts of you can want completely opposite things
    • Why protective parts aren’t necessarily “bad” parts
    • The part that wants to heal and the part that is afraid of healing
    • Why food rules, bingeing and emotional eating can have protective functions
    • Parts work for body image and the inner critic
    • How parts can show up through sensations and nervous system responses in the body
    • Why the goal isn’t to get rid of your parts
    • How your grounded adult self can begin leading instead
    • A simple parts-work practice you can try when you notice an urge, spiral or inner conflict

Parts work isn’t about letting every impulse run the show. It’s about becoming curious about what a protective pattern is trying to accomplish, building a relationship with the parts underneath it, and slowly helping your system discover that there may be other ways to feel safe now.

If you’ve ever thought, “Why do I know better but still keep doing this?” this episode is for you.

  • What Is Somatic Therapy? How Trauma Gets Stuck in the Body

What is somatic therapy, and what does it actually mean when people say that trauma is “stored” or “stuck” in the body?

In this episode of Becoming Wilder Co, we explore somatic therapy, trauma and the nervous system — and why healing isn’t always about calming yourself down. Sometimes the body is still holding an unfinished survival response: the impulse to run, fight, push away, say no, hide, reach for support, or protect yourself.

We’ll talk about how trauma can show up through protective patterns like chronic tension, bracing, shallow breathing, shutdown, hypervigilance and difficulty relaxing — and why your body may continue responding to the present using information it learned in the past.

We’ll also explore what somatic therapy actually looks like in practice, including:

    • Why somatic therapy is more than asking “Where do you feel that in your body?”
    • What people mean when they say trauma is stored in the body
    • Unfinished fight, flight, freeze and protective responses
    • Why the goal isn’t simply to calm your nervous system
    • How tension, posture and body patterns can become “shapes of protection”
    • Why forcing the body to relax or open can sometimes backfire
    • How somatic therapy can help the body experience choice, boundaries and completion
    • The connection between nervous system patterns, emotional eating, restriction and body image
    • A simple way to begin listening to what your body might be trying to communicate

Somatic therapy isn’t about digging endlessly for trauma or becoming hyper-aware of every sensation in your body. It’s about building a different relationship with your body — one where its responses begin to make sense.

Instead of asking, “How do I make this feeling go away?” we can begin asking:

What might my body be protecting?
What response never got to finish?
What would it feel like to have choice now?

Your body is not the enemy. It has been trying to protect you.

  • What Is Trauma, Really? Understanding Your Body's Response

Trauma is not only about what happened to you. It is also about what happened in your body when there wasn't enough safety, support, choice, or completion.

In this episode of Becoming Wilder Co, Tiia breaks down what trauma actually means, why two people can go through something similar and respond completely differently, and how patterns like people pleasing, emotional eating, body image struggles, and shutdown are adaptations, not defects. You'll learn how nervous system regulation and somatic therapy explain the connection between trauma, food, body image, tension, digestion, and relationships, and why healing starts with understanding what your body was protecting rather than judging it.

  • What Is Polyvagal Theory? Nervous System States Explained Simply

Polyvagal Theory explains why your body moves between feeling connected, anxious, or shut down — and why that matters for your relationship with food and body image. In this episode, we break down nervous system states (ventral vagal, sympathetic activation, dorsal vagal, freeze, and fawn) in plain language, without the neuroscience jargon overload.

If you've ever wondered why you can feel calm and in control around food one day and completely overwhelmed the next, this episode is for you.

We talk about what each nervous system state actually feels like in the body, how it shows up in eating patterns, cravings, and body image, and — most importantly — that no state is "bad."

Your body is always trying to protect you, even when it doesn't feel like it.

This isn't about diagnosing yourself or turning Polyvagal Theory into a personality quiz.

It's about understanding your body with more curiosity and less shame.

    In this episode:
🌿 What Polyvagal Theory actually is (and isn't)
🌿 The connected state (ventral vagal) and what it feels like
🌿 The activated state (sympathetic) and why urgency shows up around food
🌿 The shutdown state (dorsal vagal) and why rest can feel impossible
🌿 Mixed states: freeze, fawn, and the "tired but wired" feeling so many of us live in
🌿 A simple practice for noticing your own states without judgmentChapters:
