  • Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster - Blamed WHO, Every Single Night?!

On September 14, 2015, Rob Reiner premiered Being Charlie in Toronto, a movie his son wrote about a boy failed by every adult around him, on that son's 22nd birthday. Six years earlier, at a Malibu rehab, the boy in the next bed had heard Nick Reiner's version of who was to blame for every bad night and every locked door, every night, after lights out. Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story opens in that room and runs all three parts in one cut, from the Reiner name to Twin Towers jail.

Castle Rock put about $3 million behind Being Charlie. Nick Robinson played the son and Cary Elwes played a cold father running for governor, and one critic in Toronto found two warring agendas in one movie. The film made $32,964 worldwide. A podcast host who had Nick on in 2016 asked him to pass a hat to his father and later wrote that he regretted it. By 2020, people with knowledge of his treatment say, the diagnosis was schizophrenia and later schizoaffective disorder, and a court had put a conservator in charge of his medication for a year.

After the deaths, Mel Brooks said he was glad Carl Reiner died when he did. Martin Scorsese wrote an essay on Christmas Day. Michele's sister Martine said their lives were changed forever. And in June 2026, a 136-page petition told a probate court that Nick loved his parents and is devastated by their deaths, in a document asking for the trust they signed before his first Christmas. Tony follows the ledger from the first page to the column that never fills. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty.

  • Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster Part 3 - His Check-In Was Missing THIS

Jake Reiner was a television reporter for ten years and walked up on crime scenes all the time. In August 2026 he sat for his first interview about the one at his childhood home, said he hasn't spoken to his brother, and said he will never understand why this happened no matter how it's explained to him. Chapter three of Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story goes back to the first morning, 4:15 a.m. at the Pierside hotel in Santa Monica, and to the thing a staffer noticed was missing from the man at the front desk.

Late that morning a housekeeper cleaning room 207 found bedsheets hung over the window and blood in the shower, and the guest never checked out. Around one the next morning a Robbery-Homicide detective walked into the lobby and told the front desk he was there for a welfare check on that room. According to a law-enforcement source, he was worried the guest had cleaned up and disposed of evidence, and he taped the room off as a crime scene. By then Nick Reiner had been in custody for hours, picked up at Exposition and Vermont with a red backpack on his shoulder.

The chapter ends where the defense begins. Nick's public defender told the court on September 15 that he has a serious mental illness and a long history of self-medicating, and that his circumstances show how hard treatment is to get. Tony puts that next to the record of help brought to Nick Reiner's door eighteen times. He puts it next to Lindsay Clancy, another defendant with a serious mental illness, who sought psychiatric help repeatedly in the weeks before her children died and got days in a hospital bed. The probate fight over $325,017.49 of his grandfather's money closes the ledger, with his lawyers arguing that the slayer statute requires a determination and not a mere accusation. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty.

  • Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster Part 2 - Rob Said Nick Was WHERE?!

By several accounts, Nick Reiner spent Conan O'Brien's holiday party on December 13, 2025, walking up to his parents' friends in a hoodie and asking each of them the same questions. What's your name. What's your last name. Are you famous. His parents had reportedly asked the host's permission to bring him, because they didn't want to leave him alone. Three months earlier, Rob Reiner had told a public radio host where his son was in life, and that answer is the door chapter two of Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story walks through.

Chapter two goes back to 2016, when Being Charlie opened to $32,964 worldwide and Nick moved into the guesthouse on a $13.5 million estate with a reported $10,000-a-month allowance. The Dopey podcast is where he described harm reduction as his recovery plan and did an impression of his father. In 2018 he was back on the same show, laughing about punching out the television and a lamp until the guesthouse was wrecked. A Thanksgiving guest remembered air freshener in the billiard room and a household employee ready to quit. The LAPD logs from 2019 record a welfare check and a call coded mental, and the 2020 conservatorship let the state compel Nick's medication for a year before it lapsed.

The money he didn't take is in here too: at least $558,000 due from his trust on his thirtieth birthday, by the trustee's later math, left where it was. The chapter ends on December 13, with a disputed argument at the party, a psychiatric hold reportedly suggested and never called, and Rob and Michele driving their son home to the guesthouse a short walk from their bedroom. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty.

  • Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster Part 1 - Roommate Texted Friends THIS

On September 14, 2015, Rob Reiner stood on a stage at the Toronto International Film Festival and told the crowd that Being Charlie was very personal. His son Nick, the movie's writer, turned 22 that night and took a bow for the story of how every adult in his life had failed him. Six years before that, a 15-year-old in the next bed at a Malibu rehab had heard a different version, every night, after lights out. When Nick Reiner was arrested in December 2025, that former roommate texted the old friends from the program, and what he wrote them is the first thing Tony puts on the table in Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story.

Danny Svilar's account is the spine of chapter one. He puts the facility at about $60,000 a month. He describes a roommate with no gratitude, a pompous little punk in his words, who went after another kid and once came at him, and parents who were there for every family group. Svilar's own reason for being there was a shopping addiction, and he came out of it running a restaurant in Wyoming.

Nick's path ran the other way, and he narrated it himself. An interventionist at 14, then 17 or 18 programs by his early twenties, a wilderness program in Utah, and a first shot of heroin on Skid Row with someone from treatment. Shelters in three states by choice, a stolen bottle of OxyContin from a sick old woman, and a self-description, at 22, as a spoiled white rich kid from a Hollywood family. In 2015 his parents told the Los Angeles Times they should have listened to him instead of the professionals who called him a liar. The professionals never got an apology.

Tony builds the ledger for the first 22 years. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty.

  • Nick Reiner's $1.6M Trust Is Blocked Over WHAT?!

Nick Reiner says a trust created for him in childhood should have paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars before his parents were ever killed. Now that money is tied up in probate court while he faces two murder charges in their deaths, and the fight could shape who represents him at trial.

Rob and Michele Reiner created Nick's individual trust in 1993. His attorneys say its terms required half to be distributed outright at age 30 and the rest at 35. Nick turned 30 on September 14, 2023. He says the first payment - roughly $558,000 - never arrived. Recent filings put the total trust near $1.6 million. His lawyers argue California's slayer statute should not block money that became payable before the alleged killings because this is not an inheritance created by his parents' deaths.

The trustee side has opposed immediate release while questions about the trust, Nick's capacity, and the criminal case remain unresolved. Court records also show former private defense lawyer Alan Jackson received fees from the trust in April, even though Nick says he has not received money for his own commissary account. Jackson has said his firm is willing to return if funding becomes available.

The criminal stakes changed September 15 when District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced prosecutors will not seek the death penalty. Reiner still faces life without parole if convicted as charged, including the grand jury's lying-in-wait allegation. He has pleaded not guilty. His mental-health history may become part of his defense, but no formal insanity plea is publicly established. The trust dispute is scheduled for October 23.

  • Nick Reiner Swears His Mother Never Told Him THIS

Two filings dated September 17 put a number on what Nick Reiner has taken from his $1.6 million trust since his arrest: not even five dollars. His attorneys Anita Wu and Geoffrey Neri say the age-30 distribution of at least $558,000 came due in 2023 while Rob and Michele were alive, and the slayer statute can't reach money that was already his. They add that $325,017 traces to Carl Reiner, who died in 2020, and that the trust document itself is now paying the trustees' lawyers to oppose him.

The trustee's answer is where this fight turns. Jodi Pais Montgomery's filing says prior trustee Matthew Fishburn was told by Michele that Nick knew about the money and chose to leave it, which would mean nothing is owed until 2028. Nick's sworn response: to the best of his recollection, no one ever told him. Montgomery also warns that a payout now can't be undone if a jury convicts. Judge Garcia rules after October 23.

  • *What Nick Reiner Faces Now That Death Is Off the Table*

The death penalty is gone from Nick Reiner's case. DA Nathan Hochman announced the decision after conversations with Jake and Romy Reiner and a review of the case. Sources say Rob and Michele Reiner's lifelong opposition to capital punishment factored into the decision. The parents who spent their final months trying to keep their son stable reportedly didn't believe in the death penalty — even for the person accused of killing them.Maximum sentence is now life without the possibility of parole. But a conviction requires proving Nick was criminally responsible for what he did, and his defense will likely rest on his documented mental illness. He's been diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. A judge found him gravely disabled and placed him under a conservatorship in 2020. Sources say his medications were changed three to four weeks before the murders and he deteriorated rapidly. In California, the defense has to prove insanity — the opposite of Massachusetts, where Lindsay Clancy's jury deadlocked because the prosecution couldn't prove she was sane. California eliminated diminished capacity, so there's no middle ground. And the lying-in-wait allegation says Nick planned this, which directly contradicts any claim that he was too ill to understand what he was doing. After the murders, sources say Nick checked into a hotel where staff found blood in the shower. The insanity defense has to overcome all of it.

  • Nick Reiner’s Record Next to Lindsay Clancy’s Changes the Whole Debate

Concealment of purpose. Watching and waiting. A surprise attack from a position of advantage. Specific intent to kill. Those are the four elements prosecutors must prove to make the lying-in-wait special circumstance stick against Nick Reiner. Each one describes a mind that is functioning, planning, and choosing — and the prosecution has seventeen years of behavioral evidence to support it. Nick went to rehab 18 times by 22. He chose homelessness over treatment. On a 2018 podcast he laughed while describing how he destroyed his parents’ guest house piece by piece on a drug binge. Sources say he bragged about what he could get away with, threatened his sister, and took his parents’ money for drugs. His parents gave him the same ultimatum for years: stop using or get out. Sources say they threatened to call the police and never did. His medication was changed weeks before the killings, and sources say doctors warned his parents the switch could make his behavior worse. The night before December 14, Nick argued with his father at a holiday party and was asked to leave. The next afternoon, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found stabbed to death. Tony examines every element of the lying-in-wait charge against the record and puts Nick Reiner’s case alongside Lindsay Clancy’s — where a mother followed every instruction her doctors gave and still lost everything. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty. Held without bail. Next hearing September 15.

  • Nick Reiner's Grand Jury Indictment Changes the Death Penalty Math

The death penalty math in the Nick Reiner case just changed. A grand jury indictment unsealed August 12 adds lying in wait as a second special circumstance to the murder charges. The original filing carried one: multiple murders. Prosecutors now have two. If the DA pursues capital punishment and secures a conviction, the penalty phase starts with two aggravating factors instead of one. If he does not seek death, lying in wait still carries life in prison without the possibility of parole. California has a moratorium on executions, but the statute is active and LWOP sentences are enforced. The indictment alleges Nick Reiner hid his purpose from his parents, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, watched for his opportunity, and attacked them inside their Brentwood bedroom. Under California law, the lying-in-wait special circumstance requires proof of specific intent to kill, not just malice. Nick was diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder years before the killings. He was under a conservatorship for grave disability from 2020 to 2021, with a fiduciary making his medical decisions. His medication was changed weeks before December 14, 2025. The prosecution's theory requires a jury to find concealment and planning in a defendant with that history. The grand jury returned the indictment on July 20 and it sat sealed for more than three weeks, bypassing a preliminary hearing that had been on the calendar. Tony explains every piece of the indictment and what it means for the hearings ahead. Nick Reiner denied the charges. He is held without bail. Pretrial is September 15.

  • Nick Reiner Kept Walking Out. Lindsay Clancy Kept Asking.

Nick Reiner spent seventeen years with help arriving at his door, and by his own account in interviews given long before any of this, he kept leaving it standing there.

His own account of it is on the record long before any of this. A December 2015 People interview has him putting his first rehab around age fifteen, with roughly seventeen stays behind him by twenty-two. The Hollywood Reporter has reported that figure as some eighteen. In the LA Times that same year he described refusing to go at all, or checking in and then walking out to live on the street. He framed homelessness as what it cost to do recovery his own way instead of theirs.

Somebody carried that. Records reported by Fox affiliates show a yearlong conservatorship, which means a family asked a judge to take legal control of an adult. Court filings say siblings Jake and Romy Reiner initially agreed to fund attorney Alan Jackson and then reversed, and ABC News reports it isn't publicly known why.

There is also a complication nobody should skip. According to Variety, trustee Paul Kanin has been unwilling to release trust funds over unresolved concerns about Reiner's capacity to make sound decisions and adequately protect his own interests. A new trustee, Jodi Montgomery, has since been appointed.

He is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has pleaded not guilty, and no motive has been officially confirmed. Tony Brueski contrasts all of it with Lindsay Clancy, who went looking for help and was sent home in a day. A Hidden Killers investigation. The petition itself includes a line worth reading exactly as written. It says Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths. That sits in the court record alongside a request for the money those same parents set aside for him. Holding both of those at once is closer to the truth of this case than picking whichever one fits an argument better.
