The Resolved to Read Podcast

In today’s reading from Hosea 1:1–3:5, we see God use Hosea’s painful marriage to picture Israel’s spiritual unfaithfulness—and His shocking, pursuing love. These chapters expose the seriousness of idolatry and wandering hearts, yet also reveal a God who promises restoration, a renewed covenant relationship, and a future turning back to “the Lord and to David their king.”

In today’s reading from the book of Jonah, we follow a reluctant prophet who runs from God’s call, is rescued in the depths, and then wrestles with the scandal of God’s mercy toward his enemies. Jonah’s story exposes our own resistance to grace, both in receiving it and in seeing it extended to others, and reminds us that the Lord is patient, compassionate, and committed to pursuing both rebellious nations and stubborn hearts.

In today’s reading from 2 Kings 14:1–24 and 2 Chronicles 25:1–24, we revisit the reign of Amaziah—a king who starts by doing what is right in the Lord’s eyes, yet whose heart is not fully devoted. After a God‑given victory, pride leads him into idolatry and a reckless challenge against Israel, bringing needless ruin. These chapters warn us how quickly success can turn our hearts from God, and call us to lasting humility and obedience instead.

In today’s reading from 2 Kings 13:20–14:24 and 2 Chronicles 25:2–24, we see kings who do some of what is right in the Lord’s eyes, yet never fully give Him their hearts. Amaziah wins a great victory but quickly slips into pride and idolatry, while Israel’s kings experience temporary successes without true repentance. These chapters remind us that partial obedience and outward victories are not enough—God desires wholehearted devotion and trust.

In today’s reading from the book of Joel, we hear a powerful call to wake up, repent, and return to the Lord in the face of devastating judgment. Joel uses the image of a locust plague and “the day of the Lord” to warn God’s people, yet he also holds out stunning promises of restoration, God’s presence, and the outpouring of His Spirit. This short but weighty book reminds us that the Lord is both holy and gracious—slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and eager to welcome all who turn back to Him.

In today’s reading from 2 Kings 11:1–12:3 and 2 Chronicles 22:10–24:2, we see God protect David’s royal line through Joash, even when Athaliah tries to wipe it out completely. Hidden in the temple and then crowned at the right time, Joash’s early reign—guided by Jehoiada the priest—brings renewal of covenant faithfulness and attention to the house of the Lord. These chapters remind us that even when evil seems to prevail, God quietly preserves His promises and raises up leaders to call His people back to Him.

In today’s reading from 2 Kings 8:23–10:17 and 2 Chronicles 21:19–22:9, we watch God’s judgment fall on the house of Ahab and those joined to it. Jehu is anointed to wipe out Ahab’s line and Jezebel’s influence, while in Judah, the reigns of Jehoram and Ahaziah show how deeply compromise and alliance with wickedness can wound God’s people. These chapters are a sobering reminder that the Lord is patient but not indifferent—He keeps His promises both to save and to judge.

In today’s reading from 2 Kings 5:1–7:20 and 2 Chronicles 21:18, we see God’s power and mercy on display through Elisha—from Naaman the leper humbled and healed, to miraculous provision in a devastating famine, to judgment on those who scoff at God’s word. Alongside this, the brief note about Jehoram’s painful end in 2 Chronicles underscores that the Lord both graciously saves and faithfully judges, calling us to respond to His word with humble trust.

In today’s reading from the book of Obadiah, we hear a sharp word of judgment against Edom, Israel’s brother nation descended from Esau. Obadiah condemns Edom not only for its violence, but for standing by—and even rejoicing—while disaster fell on Judah. Placed here in our chronological reading, this prophecy reminds us how serious it is when family betrays family, and how God sees and judges pride, cruelty, and indifference toward His people.

In today’s reading from 2 Kings 3:6–27; 8:16–22 and 2 Chronicles 21, we see how far God’s people can fall when their kings turn away from Him. Jehoram of Judah walks in the ways of Ahab, leads the nation into unfaithfulness, and reaps devastating consequences, even as God remains faithful to His covenant with David. These chapters remind us that rejecting God’s ways brings real loss—but also that the Lord’s promises endure, even in the midst of judgment.
