In today's reading from Daniel 10:1–12:13, Daniel receives a final series of visions that reach far beyond his own day — detailing the rise and fall of kings, a time of unequaled distress, and the promise that those who sleep in the dust will awake, some to everlasting life. Many of these same prophecies are echoed by Jesus in the Gospels and unfolded further in the book of Revelation, reminding us that Scripture speaks with one voice about the end of the age. These chapters also pull back the curtain on unseen spiritual conflict and on the faithfulness of a God who is never surprised by history. They call us to endure to the end, to trust the One who holds the future, and to look with hope toward the resurrection.

In today's reading from Ezra 1:1–4:5, the year is about 539 B.C., and everything God promised through Jeremiah begins to unfold. The Lord stirs the heart of Cyrus, king of Persia, to send His people home and rebuild the house of the Lord in Jerusalem. What a reminder that God's timing is perfect and His reach is absolute — He can bend the will of the rulers of empires to accomplish exactly what He has spoken. The exiles return, the altar is rebuilt, the foundation is laid, and worship resumes with weeping and shouts of joy mingled together. Even as opposition rises, these chapters remind us that no captivity, no delay, and no earthly power can prevent God from keeping His word to His people.

In today's reading from Daniel 6:1–27, Daniel's enemies find no fault in him, so they manufacture one — jealousy drives them to accuse a righteous man who has done nothing wrong. The parallels to Jesus are striking. Daniel is condemned despite his innocence, sealed in a den of certain death behind a great stone, and then brought out wholly unharmed, so that a pagan king declares the greatness of the living God. In the same way, Jesus was accused out of envy, laid in a tomb behind a stone, and rose again perfectly whole, proving that death could not hold Him. These chapters remind us that faithfulness may cost us, but the God we serve is able to deliver — and His deliverance always points to the resurrection.

In today's reading from Daniel 5:1–31 and 9:1–27, a proud king throws a feast with the sacred vessels of God's temple and watches a hand write his judgment on the wall — that very night Babylon falls, just as the prophets foretold. In sharp contrast, Daniel turns to the Scriptures, discovers from Jeremiah that seventy years of exile are nearly complete, and responds not with celebration but with fasting, confession, and intercession for his people. God answers with the remarkable prophecy of the seventy "sevens," pointing ahead to the Anointed One who would be cut off for the sins of many. These chapters remind us that God humbles the proud, keeps His word to the very day, and invites us to respond to His promises the way Daniel did — on our knees, hungry for His Word, and pleading for mercy.

In today's reading from Daniel 7:1–8:27, Daniel is given visions so overwhelming that he confesses they are beyond his understanding — and even today we struggle to wrap our minds around them. The four beasts correspond to the four-part statue of Nebuchadnezzar's dream, tracing the ruling empires in order, including those still to come. At the center of it all stands a figure who approaches the Ancient of Days: one like a Son of Man, coming on the clouds, receiving everlasting dominion. Both Daniel and Ezekiel are addressed as "son of man," yet Daniel sees a greater Son of Man still to come — and Jesus takes that very title for Himself, declaring that He is the One who will come on the clouds. These chapters lift our eyes above the rise and fall of empires to the King whose kingdom will never pass away.

In today's reading from Psalms 102, 106, 123, and 137, we are given a window into the raw pain and suffering the people of Judah endured at the hands of their captors. These songs cry out from the ashes — days that vanish like smoke, contempt heaped on the humble, and tears beside the rivers of Babylon where songs of Zion could not be sung. The suffering was not limited to the unrighteous; those who feared God experienced the same devastation and the same shocking cruelty from their oppressors. Reading these psalms, it becomes clear why the book of Job belongs here chronologically. The exiles were wrestling with Job's very questions — where is God in undeserved suffering? — and these psalms teach us to bring that anguish honestly to the Lord while still confessing that He remains enthroned forever and remembers His covenant.

The reading for September 18th comes from Psalms 44, 74, 79, 80, 85, and 89. These Psalms echo the cries of distress we encountered in Job, expressing the pain, confusion, and questions that often come with suffering. Yet, like Job, they remind us of God’s majesty and sovereignty and call us to remain faithful even when we do not understand what He is doing. They also remind us of God’s covenant promise that David’s line would endure, while honestly wrestling with the apparent delay in its fulfillment. Together, these Psalms show us that we can bring our deepest questions and disappointments to God while continuing to trust in His promises and faithfulness.

In today’s reading from Job 38–42, God makes His appearance before Job and challenges him to argue his case before his Almighty Creator—the One who has endowed every living being with life and breath. Understandably, Job is left speechless. The folly of his complaints becomes abundantly clear as he is confronted with the majesty and sovereignty of God. Job’s only response is to repent in dust and ashes. God’s major point of contention with Job and his friends is their failure to speak rightly about Him. In Job’s case, he went so far as to question God’s justice in an attempt to justify himself. It is often easy for us to lash out at God when we face trouble, but it is during those difficult times that the book of Job challenges us to remain faithful to God, continue turning away from sin, and trust that God is always good, even when we don’t understand why bad things are happening.

In today's reading from Job 32:1–37:24, a younger voice finally speaks. Elihu has listened in silence, and his frustration runs in two directions: Job has justified himself rather than God, and the three friends have condemned Job without ever answering him. What sets Elihu apart is his motive—he is less interested in proving Job guilty than in defending the character and honor of God. He speaks of a God who instructs through suffering, who is never unjust, and whose greatness in wind, storm, and thunder is beyond our reach. These chapters turn our eyes upward, preparing us to hear from the Lord Himself and reminding us that the first question in suffering is not "Am I righteous?" but "Is God good?"

In today's reading from Job 25:1–31:40, Job delivers his final defense with growing intensity, and something troubling emerges: in his insistence on his own innocence, Job begins to see himself as more just than God. His friends never gave him the benefit of the doubt—they looked at his suffering and assumed he must be wicked. But Job has done the same thing in reverse: he looks at his own life, sees himself as righteous, and concludes that God must be unjust. Both sides have fallen into the same trap of trusting their own perception over God's wisdom. These chapters warn us that self-righteousness, whether it condemns others or accuses God, always distorts the truth. What Job needs—and what we need—is not a better argument, but a true encounter with the holy and merciful God.
