The Resolved to Read Podcast

In today's reading from 1 Chronicles 1:1–54; 2:1–55; 3:10–24; and 4:1–23, we begin a long run of genealogies that traces God's people from Adam to the families who came home from exile. Chronicles was written after the exile, for a small, discouraged community wondering whether they still belonged to God's story. These names gave them the answer. Their roots went back through Abraham to the very beginning, and God had not forgotten them. The focus narrows to Judah and then to the royal line of David, carried through the kings of Judah, past the exile, and on to Zerubbabel and his descendants. The throne was gone, but the line God promised to David was still alive. These lists remind us that God keeps His promises across generations, and they point straight to the Son of David who would one day come: Jesus, whose own genealogy in Matthew picks up these same names.

In today's reading from Nehemiah 12:27–13:31, the wall is dedicated with two great choirs and joy so loud "the sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away." But while Nehemiah is away, compromise creeps back in. An enemy of God is given a room in the temple, the Levites go unpaid, the Sabbath is treated like any other day, and people marry into families that worship other gods. Nehemiah has to cleanse and reform it all again. It can seem harsh that some people were kept out of the assembly because of their ancestry. But the nation had to be preserved for the coming Messiah, who would save people of every nation and break down every wall of division. The lesson still applies. The Greek word for "assembly," ekklesia, is the same word we translate "church," and our assembly is also called to stay pure. That means using discernment about who we gather with and follow. As Jesus said, "By their fruit you will recognize them."

In today's reading from Nehemiah 8:1–10:39, the people gather as one and ask Ezra to bring out the Book of the Law. He reads it aloud from daybreak until noon, and the people stand the whole time and listen closely. The Levites explain it so everyone understands, and the people weep as they hear it. What follows is joy, a renewed Feast of Tabernacles, a long prayer confessing generations of sin, and a written covenant to obey everything God commanded. Their devotion is an example for us. God isn't satisfied with half-hearted attention to His Word or with ignorance of what it says. These people had to stand for hours just to hear it read. We can open it anytime, so if we call ourselves His people, we have no excuse not to read it. These chapters also warn us not to take lightly what God expects of how we live.

In today's reading from Nehemiah 7:1–73; 11:1–36; and 12:1–26, the wall is finished, but the city is still mostly empty. Nehemiah appoints gatekeepers, singers, and Levites, puts faithful men in charge of Jerusalem, and goes back to the genealogical record of those who returned from exile. Because so few people live in the city, lots are cast to bring one in ten families inside its walls, and the people bless those who volunteer to move. These long lists of names can seem tedious, but each one shows that God knows His people individually and remembers every family that came home. These chapters remind us that walls alone don't make a city of God. It takes people willing to step forward, settle where they're needed, and serve. In God's story, no faithful servant is forgotten.

In today's reading from Nehemiah 4:1–6:16, the work on Jerusalem's walls draws fierce opposition. Enemies mock the builders, try to divide them, spread fear, and send lies to discredit Nehemiah and get him to stop. The people grow tired, and the job starts to look impossible. But Nehemiah prays, posts guards, reminds the people to "remember the Lord, who is great and awesome," and keeps them working side by side with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other. The wall is finished in just fifty-two days, and even their enemies have to admit "this work had been done with the help of our God." The same tactics still come against God's people today: discouragement, division, fear, and lies. These chapters call us to answer them the way Nehemiah did. Pray, stay united, speak the truth, keep working hard, and choose faith over fear, trusting that God can finish His work even when the odds are against us. The God who built the wall will keep building His house.

In today's reading from Nehemiah 1:1–3:32, Nehemiah hears that Jerusalem's walls are still broken down. He weeps, fasts, and prays. He doesn't set himself apart from the sins of earlier generations. Instead he confesses them as his own: "I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's family, have committed against you." He also reminds God of the warning given through Moses long before, that unfaithfulness would scatter the people among the nations, and of the promise to gather them back if they returned. Everything happened just as it was written centuries earlier. Reading through Scripture, we get to watch that kind of miracle unfold. God moves a king's heart, and family after family takes up a section of the wall. These chapters remind us that renewal starts with humble confession, and that God keeps every word He has spoken.

In today's reading from Ezra 9:1–10:44, Ezra learns that many of the returned exiles, including priests and leaders, have married people from the surrounding nations who worship other gods. He tears his clothes, falls on his knees, and confesses the people's sin as if it were his own. His call for them to send away their foreign wives can seem harsh to us. But Israel wasn't just a nation. It was the assembly of God's people, called to be holy and set apart for His glory and purposes, and the exile had shown what happened when they mixed their worship with the gods of the nations. The same call reaches the church today. If we belong to God, we aren't to be unequally yoked, especially with those who stand opposed to Him (2 Corinthians 6:14). These chapters call us to take holiness seriously and to guard the relationships that shape our hearts.

In today's reading from Ezra 7:1–8:36, a new leader arrives in Jerusalem, and Scripture tells us exactly why God's favor rested on him: "Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the LORD, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel." Ezra didn't just know about God's Word. He took the time to learn it, submitted his own life to it, and then taught it to others. Because "the gracious hand of his God was on him," a Persian king grants his requests. And when Ezra leads the exiles on a dangerous journey, he chooses fasting and prayer over a royal escort. These chapters remind us that the person God uses most is often the one who loves His Word most, and that real influence starts with a heart that studies the Word, lives it, and passes it on.

In today's reading from the book of Malachi, we see the slow erosion of faithfulness among the people who returned from exile — and especially among the priests, who offer blemished sacrifices and grow weary of serving the Lord. God confronts their robbery in tithes, their broken marriages, and their complaint that serving Him is futile. Yet Malachi promises a purifying is coming: "See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me." Elijah will come first, turning hearts back to the Way. When Jesus arrives, that purifying judgment will flow through Him toward Jerusalem and its religious leaders, as He confronts hollow practice and exposes unfaithfulness to the God who never left them. These final words in our standard arrangement of the Old Testament leave us waiting — for the messenger who prepares the way, and for the Lord who comes to His temple to refine His people.

In today's reading from Esther 5:1–10:3, God's providence is unmistakable. On the very night Haman has a gallows built for Mordecai, the king cannot sleep, calls for the chronicles, and happens to hear the account of Mordecai saving his life. Nothing in this story is accidental. The contrast between two wives is striking as well: Esther risks everything to speak against her husband's evil decree, while Zeresh encourages her husband deeper into his scheme. By the end, Haman falls on his own gallows, the Jewish people are delivered, and Purim is established so the rescue would never be forgotten. These chapters remind us that God is at work even when His name is never spoken, and that courage in the right moment can change the course of history.
