Today's reading from Matthew 9:17; 12:1–21, Mark 2:13–28; 3:1–19, Luke 5:27–39; 6:1–19, and John 5:1–3, 5–47 centers on a clash over the Sabbath. Jesus' disciples pick grain on the Sabbath, and He heals a man with a shriveled hand in the synagogue. The religious leaders treat these as violations, but Jesus answers with a claim that stops them cold: "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." He is not breaking God's law. He is revealing who He is — the One who gave the Sabbath and knows what it was for. Alongside this, He calls Matthew the tax collector, shares a table with sinners, teaches that new wine needs new wineskins, appoints the twelve, and heals a man who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. The Sabbath was never meant to be a burden. It was meant to point to rest found in Him.

Today's reading from Matthew 4:12–25; 8:1–4; 8:14–17; 9:1–8, Mark 1:14–45; 2:1–12, and Luke 4:14–44; 5:1–26 shows Jesus stepping into public ministry with astonishing authority. He begins preaching in Galilee: "The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news." Then He calls Peter, Andrew, James, and John from their nets, and heals a man with leprosy, Peter's mother-in-law, and crowds brought to Him at sunset. A paralyzed man is lowered through a roof, and Jesus does something no one expected — He forgives his sins first, then tells him to walk, proving He has authority to do both. He calms fevers, casts out demons, teaches with power, and calls a tax collector named Levi to follow Him. These chapters present a King whose authority reaches bodies, spirits, and the deepest guilt of the human heart.

Today's reading from John 1:35–4:54 and Luke 3:19–20 begins with Jesus' first miracle at Cana, and even that sign carries deep meaning. The jars He fills are the purification jars — the water used for ceremonial cleansing. Jesus turns that cleansing water into wine, foreshadowing what His blood would one day do to cleanse us from within. From there He keeps moving people past outward forms to the heart. John's baptism with water points to the One who gives spiritual baptism. Clearing the temple courts shows that God's house is not a marketplace. Telling the Samaritan woman that true worshipers will worship "in spirit and in truth" overturns any pride in which mountain you stand on. Offering her living water, He promises she will never thirst again. To Nicodemus He speaks of being born of the Spirit, not merely born of water — that is, of the flesh. And the beautiful moment comes when His disciples bring Him food and He says His real nourishment is doing the will of the One who sent Him: "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work." Pursuing the lost is as fundamental to Him as eating.

Today's reading from Matthew 3:1–17; 4:1–11, Mark 1:5–13, Luke 3:1–23; 4:1–13, and John 1:19–34 brings us to John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus' ministry. John makes clear what the "way" of the Lord actually looks like — sharing your coat with someone who has none, feeding the hungry, treating others as you would want to be treated. That is the good news, the Gospel, and it will be perfectly embodied in the Messiah to come, the Way of salvation. John also tells us plainly who is greater: he baptizes with water, but the One coming after him will cleanse not the outward body but the heart, with the fire of the Holy Spirit. Then Jesus goes into the wilderness, and there we see how He fights. He answers every scheme of the enemy by quoting Scripture — three times from Deuteronomy. Satan's tactic is to pull Scripture out of context; Jesus resists by knowing the whole Word of God and standing on it. He shows us the importance of the Old Testament law, and He shows us that a heart filled with God's Word is a heart the enemy cannot move.

Today's reading from Matthew 2:1–23 and Luke 2:39–52 shows us that even at the very beginning of Jesus' life, a plan born out of spiritual darkness is already moving to destroy Him. Herod, threatened by the news of a newborn king, orders the slaughter of the boys in Bethlehem, and Jesus' family flees to Egypt. Jesus will face enemies His whole life. Once again, Old Testament prophecy is fulfilled down to the detail — Micah names Bethlehem as the Messiah's birthplace, Hosea speaks of God calling His son out of Egypt, and Jeremiah gives voice to Rachel weeping for her children. Then, at just twelve years old, Jesus stays behind in the temple and tells His anxious mother, "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" Even as a boy, He makes it clear His origins are not from this world and that His true Father is in heaven.

Today the New Testament opens with a priest named Zechariah serving his turn in the temple, and immediately we see how much the Old Testament matters for understanding what happens. Luke tells us which priestly division Zechariah belonged to and which service he was assigned, details that only make sense if you know how Israel's worship was organized. An angel announces a son who will go before the Lord "in the spirit and power of Elijah" to prepare the way. Mary is told she will bear a child from the line of David whose kingdom will never end, and Zechariah's song reaches back to the oath sworn to Abraham and to the promises made to David. Then Jesus is born in Bethlehem and presented in the temple, where Simeon and Anna recognize Him. Even here we catch a glimpse of expectation. Many were watching for a powerful king who would rescue them from earthly enemies. God was sending something greater.

Today we read the two genealogies of Jesus, and they could not be more different in shape. Matthew opens his Gospel with the line of descent from Abraham to Joseph, arranged in three groups of fourteen generations — a careful, structured argument that Jesus is both the promised seed of Abraham and the rightful heir of David's throne. Luke, by contrast, traces the line backward from Jesus through Heli and all the way to Adam, then to God Himself, showing that Jesus belongs not just to Israel but to the whole human family. Together they make one point: the genealogy the Old Testament spent centuries building has arrived at its destination. Worth noticing is the company Jesus keeps in these lists. Matthew names Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba — women with complicated stories, and Ruth a foreigner. God's plan of redemption runs straight through broken people and outsiders, and it always has. Everything we’ve read this year has been moving toward these list of names.

Today we step into the New Testament, and these opening verses show us how three of the Gospels begin. Mark cuts straight to the point: "The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God." Luke tells us why he's writing, having carefully investigated everything so Theophilus could know the certainty of what he'd been taught. And John goes back before time itself: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Then comes the stunning claim — "The Word became flesh and made his tabernacle among us." That word matters. Jesus clothed Himself in fragile human flesh, leaving the security of heaven to live in a tent, just as God once dwelt with Israel in the wilderness. We're harmonizing these accounts into one continuous reading, but each author keeps a distinct voice, purpose, and audience. Mark writes with urgency for a Roman audience, Luke with careful order for a Gentile inquirer, and John with deep reflection for those who need to see Jesus as God in the flesh. Four witnesses, one Lord. Welcome to the Gospels.

Today we finish the Old Testament and look back at the ground we've covered. Congratulations — you've read from creation to Malachi.

We trace the covenants that carry the story forward: God's promise to Abraham of blessing for every nation, the covenant at Sinai that shaped a people set apart for Him, and the promise to David of a throne that would never end. We look at the themes that kept rising to the surface, especially God's longing to dwell with His people — from walking with Adam and Eve in the garden, to the tabernacle, to Solomon's temple, to the return from exile.

We ask what we learned about God's character: holy and just, faithful to every promise, patient beyond measure, and never content to leave His people in their sin. We ask what we learned about ourselves: we forget quickly, drift easily, and need reminders we can see and hear. And we ask where we saw Jesus on every page — the Passover Lamb, the mediator Job longed for, the righteous Branch, the Cornerstone, the Good Shepherd, the One who would come to His temple and refine His people.

Now we turn the page. On October 18th we begin the New Testament, reading the Gospels side by side from four different voices. Everything the Old Testament promised is walking toward us. Keep going.

In today's reading from 1 Chronicles 4:24–43; 5:1–17; 6:1–81; 7:1–40; 8:1–40; and 9:1–34, we finish the genealogies and close the Old Testament. These chapters cover the remaining tribes, the priestly line of Levi with its cities and duties, the family of Benjamin, and finally the people who resettled Jerusalem after the exile. It's worth remembering why these lists mattered to a small community rebuilding after exile. They proved each family still belonged to God's covenant people. They showed that God remembered individuals by name across generations. And they carefully preserved two vital threads: the line of David awaiting the promised King, and the line of Levi awaiting the restored priesthood. As the Old Testament ends, everything is in place. The promises stand, the lineages are recorded, and Israel waits for the One who would come from both lines. We pick up in the New Testament on October 18.
