In today's reading from 2 Kings 25:2–22; 2 Chronicles 36:17–21; Jeremiah 39:2–18; 52:5–30; and 40:1–6, the long-threatened fall of Jerusalem finally comes to pass. The city is breached, the temple is destroyed, the people are carried into exile, and everything the prophets had warned about is fulfilled. Yet even in the midst of devastation, God's word proves true and His mercy is not absent - Jeremiah is preserved, Ebed-Melek is remembered, and the Lord shows that He still sees those who trust Him. These chapters remind us that God's judgment is real, His warnings are certain, and even in collapse He remains faithful to His word.
