Hi mamas, I have to admit that I have been putting off recording this episode because it's a very emotional one – it feels hard to share, but I also know that it feels like the right path forward. I’m diving into my emotional journey of motherhood, early entrepreneurship and now, the transition to business coaching. Also, how I’m learning to listen to my intuition which has led me to pause my work with sleep consulting and taking a step back from The Resting in Motherhood Podcast. This year especially has been a lesson on embracing change as I navigate my evolving identity. I’m still figuring out what this all looks like, so this is definitely a pause, not a goodbye.

Today’s episode is coming from the heart and has been one that I wanted to talk about for a while. It is definitely a topic that’s more complex, or even polarizing – so let’s dive into my daughter’s journey with Santa (and soon the Tooth Fairy). Of course, before listening in, what I'm doing personally in my life does not mean that you have to do it, and just because I'm doing something one way doesn't mean that you're doing it the wrong way. It also doesn't mean that I'm judging you for doing it your way. But! In this episode, you will hear how the concept of Santa relates to the complexities of parenting, why I decided to never introduce Santa from the start, and how – if you choose to do Santa – you can do it in a way that’s in alignment with gentle parenting. Whatever you decide, I hope you can feel confident in embracing change to foster a more relaxed and joyful approach to motherhood in this season.

Today as I sat down to record, I noticed a huge glare coming from the window by my desk because it’s fall and the sun is shifting and shining differently. This is such a beautiful reminder of the change in seasons and how nothing is permanent, how everything is changing. Today’s episode comes from a recent real life experience – Lilah brought a Polly Pocket into our collection of Montessori toys (which are very wooden and very neutral). If this would have happened two years ago, I would have been up at night feeling anxious about this different, plastic toy. But now, I’m at ease and comfortable with it. This is an example of getting comfortable within the gray area of motherhood. If you’re listening to this podcast, you are probably doing motherhood your own way and this can feel like you have to stay 100% true to your ideals with every situation. But in reality, we have to give ourselves permission to lean into flexibility while still doing things our own way. “He’s just not that smart.” This is what Lynn Greenberg, the author of the children’s book Robby the Dyslexic Taxi and the Airport Adventure, was told by her son’s elementary school teacher. Lynn is a mother of four, and Jonathan is her youngest child. Despite what the teacher told her, she knew her son was wicked smart. Her gut was telling her that there was a deeper reason why Jonathan was experiencing learning issues. At six and a half years old, Jonathan was diagnosed with dyslexia, a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person reads, writes, and spells. This began Lynn and Jonathan’s adventure of navigating unique learning needs, finding community, and making the world a better place.
