With the holidays approaching, I want to chat about something that I am sure we have all encountered in our parenthood journey – judgment from our family or other loved ones. I know these topics can be so polarizing, but I’m hoping they don’t always have to be for you and your family. In this episode I’m sharing a few different ways you can navigate your next holiday gathering when your parenting decisions might come up in conversation. Remember, it's okay to stick up for yourself and it's okay to hold firm boundaries (even with the ones that we love) and also that our children are deserving of this respect and love, too.

Today as I sat down to record, I noticed a huge glare coming from the window by my desk because it’s fall and the sun is shifting and shining differently. This is such a beautiful reminder of the change in seasons and how nothing is permanent, how everything is changing. I just loved that because it hints at what I want to talk to you about today in this episode. Today’s episode comes from a recent real life experience – Lilah brought a Polly Pocket into our collection of Montessori toys (which are very wooden and very neutral). If this would have happened two years ago, I would have been up at night feeling anxious about this different, plastic toy. But now, I’m at ease and comfortable with it. This is an example of getting comfortable within the gray area of motherhood. If you’re listening to this podcast, you are probably doing motherhood your own way and this can feel like you have to stay 100% true to your ideals with every situation. But in reality, we have to give ourselves permission to lean into flexibility while still doing things our own way. “He’s just not that smart.” This is what Lynn Greenberg, the author of the children’s book Robby the Dyslexic Taxi and the Airport Adventure, was told by her son’s elementary school teacher. Lynn is a mother of four, and Jonathan is her youngest child. Despite what the teacher told her, she knew her son was wicked smart. Her gut was telling her that there was a deeper reason why Jonathan was experiencing learning issues. At six and a half years old, Jonathan was diagnosed with dyslexia, a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person reads, writes, and spells. This began Lynn and Jonathan’s adventure of navigating unique learning needs, finding community, and making the world a better place. One of the biggest ways you can find rest in motherhood is by leaning on your friendships, especially friendship with like minded women (whether they are a mom or not). So this is exactly what I want to talk about on this episode of the podcast – the themes of friendship and motherhood, discussing how relationships can evolve after becoming a mom. I want to share how you can navigate changing friendships, and the loneliness that can so often accompany motherhood. This episode is small but mighty! It’s something that I’ve wanted to bring to the podcast for a while, but haven’t found the time or place. However, this topic is something that has cropped up a lot recently so I think that’s a sign. So, today I want to talk about the pressure we all feel (or have felt) to do it all as a mom, especially when we see other moms on social media who seem to be so authentic while doing it all. I want to encourage you to focus on your own “area of expertise” in motherhood and let the rest go, let go of the expectation to do it all.

In this episode I want to talk about the intense pressure that we feel as moms to soak up every minute or not miss a minute, like we need to be present 110% of the day. While I think this is beautiful because we know that these early years really are fleeting and they go so fast… Having this really unrealistic expectation of ourselves to soak it all up and not miss a minute, is actually really harming us in motherhood. It puts so much pressure on ourselves to be present for every moment, to enjoy every moment and what can actually end up happening is we end up burnt out, which leads to the opposite of our intentions – we're not enjoying every moment and we're not as present as we’d like to be. A lot of times the go-to words that are associated with motherhood are chaotic, stressful, lonely, and more. But what if we could flip it around and focus more on the positive connotations of motherhood? I asked my community how they would most like to feel about motherhood, and a couple of the words that came up over and over were “joy” and “effortless”. So today I want to talk about this concept of the hardest job that we're all doing (which is motherhood) and how can that be effortless? And what does a thriving mom look like? This is not meant to discredit anyone’s motherhood experience, but instead speak to a lot of the difficulties that many of us face every single day. But to me, effortlessness isn’t about what something looks like, but more on how my day to day feels – how I show up to and react to the normal parts of motherhood. So listen in to hear how you can feel more grounded, more peaceful, and yes… effortless and thriving.
