So many of us live for the here and now, investing in and caring for earthly things that won’t last. Instead, we should give of ourselves to something better — eternal things that will endure forever. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t take care of our possessions or spend time on hobbies that make us happy. But when we care too much about our earthly possessions, or invest all of our time in our hobbies and our own joy, that’s when we miss out on opportunities to invest in eternity and store up treasures in heaven.

This Sunday, Pastor Tim was back with a message about the significance of storing treasure in heaven rather than treasure on earth. Focusing on eternity helps break the grip that money and other earthly possessions can have on our lives.

"For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." – Matthew 6:21

One hard thing about being human and on this earth is, although we can know how wonderful our eternal home is, we still cling to this life and this world. This is an indicator that we are putting things, and often times people we love, above God. But when we keep our focus on our eternal home, on our Savior and Lord, we actually love and enjoy those things and people all the more.

Pastor Josh urges us to live now as citizens of heaven. As believers, our citizenship is not of this world – it's already in heaven. What if we started right now living as citizens of heaven? What difference would that make in the present and for eternity?

“We drive across bridges all the time, showing our faith and trust that this bridge is strong enough to get us from this side to that side and will not collapse. And if we didn’t, we wouldn’t drive across that bridge.” This analogy was used to illustrate the faith required to make sure we end up in heaven. It is our belief in Jesus that He who came from heaven is the only One who can take us to heaven. He alone is the bridge from this life to the life to come. The bridge from death and separation from God to an eternal life in heaven with God.

Pastor Josh explains that there aren't multiple routes to heaven. The only way to get to heaven is to place our faith and trust in the One who came from heaven – Jesus Christ.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." – John 3:16

If we are to be free, the only thing that will lead to real freedom is the truth. The truth is that my mom, sister and brother, who had all placed their faith in Jesus, are no longer suffering, and in turn, they are experiencing the unexplainable joy of being fully present with our Creator (John 3:16, 1 Corinthians 13:12)! The truth is that when I am struggling and in need of comfort, I can turn to Christ himself, for his burden is easy and His yoke is light (Matthew 11:30). He is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6). When you have questions, when doubts arise, when troubles come… Look to Jesus.

Continuing our "Homecoming" series from last week, Pastor Tim addresses ten common questions people have about heaven. He reminds us that we have to look to heaven to learn about heaven.

In the midst of the pain, I would picture the finish line, envisioning the triumph and the relief that crossing that line would allow. And it would work… I knew that I was in this race and a vital part of the team, that I had a role to fill and a job to do while I was running, but that there was an end coming, and it held sweet relief.
