On a dark, rainy night, secluded in the corner of the old bar, The Cross Bearer confronts Jerry Wrigdd about his alleged time-traveling.

Three brothers - Hector, Manny, and Doans - discuss ominous changes between America's leaders and citizens while fishing along the Muskingum River. Then, Jerry Wrigdd faces a committee who will decide if treason charges are brought against him.

We finally meet Jerry Wrigdd as he is questioned by Theo Thrift at police headquarters. After hours of discussion circling Columbus in a limousine - Tripe, Thrift, and mayor Bile come up with a scheme to make Jerry sell his uncle's property.

An old man trudges up High Street, carrying a cross, through the Short North and a rabid throng of football fans. He is joined by Vince, a welder from Akron, who has come to Columbus looking for anti-Tripe protesters, but instead finds something totally different.

The mysterious Jerry Wrigdd refuses to sign over his Uncle's property for Columbus' new pro football stadium. Team owner, Theo Thrift, sends a couple men to find out why. What they discover about the elusive poet does little to ease the minds of those hoping for a swift conclusion to Wrigdd's holdout.

Nico tells of Jerry's continued spiral as Bardot, his girlfriend, has gone missing. In an act of anguish, Jerry nails a series of protest poems on the door of the Republican Headquarters downtown, which Nico reads, again standing at the fountain in Goodale Park.
