The Risktory Podcast

I wasn’t going to do another Make it Make Sense Episode for a few weeks but then… GameStop happened.

Real time disruption – on this scale in terms of impact – is incredibly rare and, so, on this week’s episode. I unpack the GameStop crisis that is currently unfolding. How it happened. Why it happened. And what I think will happen next.

Dame Nellie Melba was the Beyonce of her time. She could not only float a tune. She transformed opera, forcing the space to evolve and, in turn, embrace the new and the innovative.

Without Melba, we might not know and/or appreciate the genius of Puccini’s La Boheme.

Dame Nellie Melba was a relentless opportunity hunter.

When doors closed, she opened all the windows.

On the inaugural Make it Make Sense episode (stay tuned to the end of the episode for more details about this new series on the podcast). On this inaugural episode, what happened to the US in 2020.

2020 will go down as one of the most volatile, unsettling and devastating in US history. The impeachment of President Donald Trump. COVID-19. The deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd which led to widespread civil unrest across the country. A bitterly fought Presidential Election.

In this episode, I will present my risk-based hypothesis on what is happening in the US. Why it may continue. And how the US will prevail. Because she will prevail.

Caveat: this is not an episode about politics. I have zero allegiance to any political party. I am a John Locke inspired Classic Liberal: neither the Democrats or Republicans possess platforms, at a holistic level, that I support. I am politically agnostic.

Coming up on the first episode of 2021, a story to make you feel good. Lord knows, we need something uplifting, particularly in the US.

Today, I am bringing you the story of Richard Montanez, and the invention of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

I often talk about opportunity, and the need to be able to both identify and spot it, but I don’t always talk about the bootstrapping that naturally accompanies opportunity.

The story of Richard Montanez is what happens when you have the ability to spot opportunity, and the discipline to see it through.

Merry Christmas and welcome to Day 12 of the 12 Days of Riskmas.

Coming up on this final episode of 2020, Miracle on Ice. You guys all know how much I love a good tale of the underdog. Today, I explore how an underpowered group of inexperienced American ice hockey players defeated a powerhouse Soviet team.

Coming up on Day 11 of the 12 Days of Riskmas, when it comes to most major disasters, what you will find is that it’s never a BIG BANG that triggers the impacts but, rather a litany of small misses that – cumulatively – create a risk exposure too large to absorb.

In today’s episode, I look at a how a simple pair of binoculars – a canary in the coalmine - might have changed the outcome of the doomed voyage of Titanic.

Coming up on Day 10 of the 12 Days of Riskmas, when your controls and treatment strategies no longer work to mitigate the threat… it’s time to get innovative.

Today, I look at how, in World War II, US forces cracked JN25, the principle cipher Japanese naval forces used to send messages.

It is Day 9 of the 12 Days of Riskmas and, today, the story of the Berlin Conference of 1884. In 1884, a number of European powers came together to discuss how they would carve up the African continent as part of a heightened drive towards colonialism.

I often say that risk is a long game, resplendent with interconnected threat and opportunity.

On today’s episode, I look at how the Berlin Conference set the stage for chaos in Africa, chaos that continues, in numerous forms, to this day.

On today’s Day 8 of the 12 Days of Riskmas, I bring you the story of the littlest disruptor, Ruby Bridges. Ruby Bridges was just six years old when she challenged the might of the Jim Crow South, just by seeking an education.

This episode does contain some information that might be upsetting for listeners. Listener
discretion is advised.

It is Day 7 of the 12 Days of Riskmas and, today, I am bringing an epic tale of the Powder Monkeys.

No, not the Australian Rock Band (but you should probably check them out). Powder monkeys were young boys (and occasionally girls) who served on warships from the mid 16th to 19th centuries.

The tale of the Powder Monkeys is proof that risk is a game anyone can play. These kids worked hard, took on threat, chased opportunity, and, in some instances, changed the course of history with their bravery.
