The Risktory Podcast

Welcome to Day 6 of The 12 Days of Riskmas.

Today, a vale for Australian actress, Joy Westmore. Now, for OG listeners of the podcast, you might be thinking ‘Westmore? Westmore? Why does that sound familiar’. Well, I have previously hosted my dear friend, Emily Westmore, on the podcast, on my Risktorian of the Month series of episodes. I will leave a link to Emily’s episode below.

Joy is Emily’s mother, who recently passed away. Today’s episode is a very personal tribute to a woman ahead of her time, and a woman who exemplified the need for versatility in a world that never stops changing.

Welcome to Day 4 of The 12 Days of Riskmas.

The most popular episode of the Risktory Podcast this year has been my episode on the Nash Equilibrium vs COVID 19. As the US heads into another period of prolonged lockdown, and concerns are raised as to whether the Nash Equilibrium is even relevant anymore, on today’s episode, I’ll explain why I think the Nash Equilibrium will prevail.

Welcome to Day 3 of The 12 Days of Riskmas.

Today I am going to explore how the actions of one man – a genuine peacemaker in the form of Stanislav Petrov - may have saved the world from nuclear annihilation.

And that might sound like hyperbole but, as you’ll find out in today’s episode, what Stanislav did was make a make a choice he didn’t have to make, that altered the direction of world history.

Welcome to Day 2 of The 12 Days of Riskmas.

Today, I’m bringing you the story of Charles Ponzi, the man who launched a scam so clever that, even today, 70 years after his death, his scam continues to fool tens of thousands around the world.

They say history repeats. The story of Charles Ponzi, and Ponzi schemes, is proof positive that – sometimes – we don’t learn the lessons of the past well enough to avoid the threats of the future.

Welcome to The 12 Days of Riskmas!

The 12 Days of Riskmas are my way of saying thank you to all of my listeners – both the OGs and the newer listeners – for their support in 2020. Each day, for the next twelve days, I will be publishing a new Risktory episode every day, with each episode focused on a risk theme or concept. These won’t be full length episodes: more bite sized pieces.

But they will be stories of risk that I think you guys will love in the leadup to one of my favorite holidays of the year, Christmas.

Kicking off the 12 Days of Riskmas is the story of Ana Reyes and Pat Harkleroad, a beautiful tale of opportunity grasped, and paying that opportunity forward.

Coming up today, a feel good story in a year where, let’s be real, there’s been a lot of bad. The story of a husband and wife doctor team who have spearheaded the leading vaccine for COVID-19.

You’ll often hear me say on the podcast, that opportunity is borne out of threat. The work of Doctors Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci, the two driving forces behind the leading COVID-19 vaccine, is the poster child of how anyone can take incredible, existential, and in this case – global, once in a generational, threat – and respond through life changing, and life saving, opportunity chasing.

On today’s episode, I’ll explore how Doctors Sahin and Tureci formulated the COVID-19 vaccine.

I stumbled across Florence Knoll while doing research on new furniture for my house. Typical for me, once I realized I liked Knoll’s designs, I wanted to know more about the woman who created those designs.

And what I found blew me away. The life and times of Florence Knoll – in its most encapsulated form – is the story of a woman who was told ‘do this’, the ‘this’ being considered quote/unquote ‘womans work’ - and transforming that ‘womans work’ into a whole industry. And an assailable legacy.

On this week’s episode, the story of Florence Knoll, who is the personification of someone taking lemons and making perfect, life changing lemonade.

Coming up on this week’s episode, whatever happened to Lehman Brothers, the financial services giant whose collapse in 2008 triggered a global meltdown.

For me, Lehman Brothers is a super interesting collapse because, while it has all the ingredients of a garden variety corporate collapse – leadership malfeasance, creative accounting, short-selling – it is a collapse that uniquely transformed how we view and respond, to threat.

Specifically, it illustrated, in terrible and brutal technicolor glory, the impacts of interconnected threat. It forced us to recognize and understand that threat doesn’t exist in a vacuum. To paraphrase Sir Isaac Newton’s third law of physics in risk terms: every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

In this week’s episode of the Risktory Podcast, I’ll tell you all about the Lehman Brothers collapse, and I’ll explore why interconnected threat is one risk management concept, everyone should know.

This week, a much requested episode on, of all things Tik Tok. Specifically, is Tik Tok the threat to us that it is purported to be, or is this all one big game of political pinball. A game that will deny us the joy that comes from watching 15 second vignettes of dogs in tutus.

All jokes aside, on this week’s episode, I am going to explore the ongoing conversation around Tik Tok and explain, from my perspective, the real threat we ought to be worried about.
