Steve Smith is the voice behind The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast and a lifelong turf professional whose journey began in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales.
Growing up literally alongside a golf course, Steve developed an early connection to the game and the land that supports it. As a teenager, he began working casually at Wentworth Falls Country Club, where his passion for sports turf quickly turned into a career path. While still at school, he transitioned into an apprenticeship in Sports Turf Management, gaining hands-on experience while completing his qualifications.
After becoming a qualified turf professional, Steve continued working at Wentworth Falls before taking on the role of Superintendent at Katoomba Golf Club. Over more than a decade in the position, he played a key role in maintaining and developing the course until its eventual closure.
Facing a crossroads in his career, Steve decided to take a leap and start his own professional lawn care business. Through that journey and his deep connections within the industry, he eventually launched The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast — a platform dedicated to sharing stories, insights, and knowledge from professionals across the turf and golf industries.
Since launching the show, Steve has connected with leading voices in turf management around Australia and beyond, helping shine a spotlight on the people who keep the game playable.
Today, with sponsorship from John Deere Golf AUS/NZ and a growing audience, Steve continues to build a strong presence in the sports turf community — proving that his career in turf is far from finished and only getting bigger.
