One of ten children, after his mother passed his former Confederate soldier father sent him and his brother to live with their grandmother. Duncan’s grandmother was an excellent cook, which is where he devolved his love for food despite never learning to cook himself.

March 15, 2022 Tame and Unruly Archive: Stoney Lonesome Cemetery and Occoquan Workhouse
The Occoquan Workhouse is now an artist’s guild and museum, but it was a crowded and occasionally corrupt prison that was part of the Washington D.C. prison system until it closed in 2001. The Workhouse is mostly known for its relation to the Women’s Suffrage Movement; what was known as the “Darkest Day of Prison” which happened on November 14, 1917, but the days leading up to this night was also horrific when suffragettes were arrested they spent June through December of 1917 in Occoquan Workhouse as prisoners (the wood buildings they stayed in no longer stand). During the time leading up to this night the women faced gruesome conditions and were notably fed maggots, aggressively forced fed with a tube by it being shoved down their nose and raw eggs dumped into the tube, or they were not fed at all.
