  • The Rock Geeks Episode 6 Part 1 - Dirt by Alice In Chains
On episode 6 of The Rock Geeks podcast Phil and Julian get stuck into one of the greatest albums of the 90s, Dirt by Alice In Chains. In part one they discuss in some depth the recording techniques employed by producer Dave Jerden in the making of this absolute behemoth of an album, talk about Jerry Cantrell's unique choice of guitar as well as his quite extensive guitar rig and Phil discovers a new brand of bass guitar that nobody else has ever heard of. Ever.

  • The Rock Geeks Episode 5 - If You Want Blood, You've Got It by AC/DC
On episode 5 of The Rock Geeks Phil reminisces about rocking out at the back of the bus with his Walkman on, loud, having his teenage mind blown by Angus Young's guitar playing, while Julian remembers first seeing the album cover for If You Want Blood... aged 5 and being very concerned for Angus Young's wellbeing... Also in this episode, we discuss one of Scotland's legendary music venues, The Glasgow Apollo (where most of If You Want Blood... was recorded) and get all geeky about the gear that was used, with Phil going above and beyond in the drums department for a change. Finally, we also examine some of Bon Scott's lyrical choices while using the phrase 'of its time' more than usual.

  • The Rock Geeks Episode 4 Part 2 - The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers
In part two of The Rock Geeks' long and often uncomfortable look at one of rock's darker albums, Phil and Julian pick up where they left off in part one with a track by track analysis of The Holy Bible, then draw their conclusions (spoiler alert: it's a work of genius), before moving onto chat about the iconic art work, by British artist Jenny Saville, that adorns the album's cover.

  • The Rock Geeks Episode 4 Part 1 - The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers
Manic Street Preachers' The Holy Bible is a tough listen but an ultimately rewarding one. While researching this album, Phil listened to part or all of The Holy Bible every day for about a month and came off worse than Morgan Spurlock but, paradoxically, felt more enriched for it. Amongst many other points of conversation, in part one of episode four we talk about why Manic Street Preachers chose to record the album at a £50 per day studio in the red light district of Cardiff, how that studio was responible for the austere, unforgiving and in your face sound that The Holy Bible is renowned for and then get stuck into analysing the album track by track.

  • The Rock Geeks Episode 3 Part 2 - Master Of Puppets by Metallica
On part two of The Rock Geeks deep dive into Metallica's genre defining third album, Master Of Puppets, Phil and Julian explore the gear that the band used to record the album with and find out that much of the internet is mistaken about which guitar James Hetfield used to record his parts. They also discuss the conception and creation of the iconic art-work that graces the front cover of the album and, with much respect, talk about Cliff Burton, his influence on the band and his untimely death.

  • The Rock Geeks Episode 3 Part 1 - Master Of Puppets by Metallica
Metallica's Master Of Puppets is possibly the thrash metal genre's most defining album and although Julian took to it like a heavy metal duck to water, Phil was a little more reticent, mainly because his dad introduced him to it. Not cool. On part one of this episode of The Rock Geeks Phil and Julian discuss Making Love and Music at Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen's Sweet Silence Studios, talk about James Hetfield's phenomenal songwriting and arranging chops and find out what the recording of Master Of Puppets had in common with the recording of The Chipmunks.

  • The Rock Geeks Episode 2 Part 2 - Pinkerton by Weezer
Weezer's second album Pinkerton is quite difficult to talk about. This is The Rock Geek's second attempt at making sense of this hugely polarising album and we're still not sure we've got to the bottom of things! In part two of this two part episode we get all geeky about the gear that the band were using in the studio to create their proto-emo masterpiece, chat about the distinctive artwork that graces the front cover of the album and discuss how opinions on Pinkerton have changed since its release.

Weezer's second album Pinkerton is quite difficult to talk about. This is The Rock Geek's second attempt at making sense of this hugely polarising album and we're still not sure we've got to the bottom of things! In part one of this two part episode we try to get to grips with Pinkerton's stop/start recording schedule, beginning in New York and ending in LA, via Boston and Havard, and chat about how Rivers Cuomo's experiences on the road touring The Blue Album led to some of the most simultaneously beautifully tender and serial killeresque lyrics ever penned.

  • The Rock Geeks Pilot Episode 1 - Iron Maiden

Phil and Julian, AKA The Rock Geeks, got together last year to see about recording a podcast, to figure out how the whole podcasting thing works and, most importantly, whether or not it would be fun to do. This debut 'pilot' episode is the result of that process. It's not perfect, but it did turn out to be lots of fun and Phil and Julian learned a lot from the experience about how to produce better future podcasts.

In this first episode of The Rock Geeks, Phil and Julian take a deep dive into Iron Maiden's eponymous debut album in which, amongst other things, they discuss Ian Gillan's recording studio, disinterested record producers, dodgy heavy metal lyrics and getting booted out of the band for liking Queen and The Eagles a little too much.
