I have to warn you, on today’s show, I may get a bit controversial. I have an opinion that doesn’t really seem to be very popular among many of those who talk about sports for a living, and could possibly have a negative impact on the credibility of this very show, but I don’t care. I’m gonna say it anyways; I love NBA All-Star Weekend. Always have, always will. Now, NBA sophisticates/burnouts would argue that the dunk contest is usually trash, and that the game itself is a sloppy and meaningless exhibition where no one plays D. And they’re right, but they miss the whole point, and in doing so, miss out on all the fun. Granted, the games and the events seem aimed at the younger audience, but for hardcore hoops heads, there’s a certain historical significance in All-Star Weekend. Every year we see a collection of the best the Association has to offer, giving us the opportunity to compare All-Star rosters to those that we’ve seen before, and really gauge where the league is at, talent wise, at the moment. If you saw the starting 5 for Team LeBron on Sunday, you know how deep the talent runs, and if you didn’t, well, your loss. I’m not gonna lie, this isn’t how I wanted to see the Super Bowl end. I have no skin in the game, the Chiefs aren’t even my team, but as a football fan I hate to see it. This Tom Brady guy is ruining the game, with his leadership, and his playmaking, and all the damn rings! It’s getting to the point that he can do no wrong, that people think the guy can walk on water, but as someone who has watched Brady’s whole career unfold and spends all day on Sundays parsing the League from year to year, I’m here to tell you, you’re probably right. But that doesn’t make it a good thing. You see, there’s no context for what he’s done, we’ve never seen this once in a lifetime convergence of both skill and luck on our playing fields before and likely never will again, and the end result is that there is no way to compare him to other QBs. And therein lies the problem. Brady’s accomplishments have put him so far beyond everyone else that there is no other way to assess his career other than titles, effectively anointing him as football perfection, but that only does a disservice to both Brady and his peers. Not only does it minimize the accomplishments of other stars, but it fails to take into account the most important aspect of Brady’s greatness; that he wasn’t always the best QB in the League, but he has consistently been able to grow as a player, even into his 21st season. So yeah, Brady’s great, but we didn’t need a 7th ring to tell us that. Nor do we need an 8th next year. And so, as we bid farewell to another football season, we continue our journey through another NBA season, and today, we’re looking around the West to check in on some contenders.
