Take the Raiders for example. 2-0 after beating two playoff contenders, but are we really buying Vegas as a powerhouse and Carr as a premature MVP candidate? And people loved the Colts coming into the season, but after a 0-2 start, is it time to sell your stock in Indy? The AFC West is topsy turvy, the AFC South is a tire fire, there’s a 44 year old QB throwing TDs like it’s light work while a bunch of 20-something QBs with all the talent and athleticism in the world struggle to look competent, and all we can do is try to make some sort of sense out of it all. On today’s show, Gaber and I are back from our respective summer travels and ready to get back into all the news that the NBA has thrown at us over the past two weeks, but don’t worry, we’ve kept up to speed on everything. As of the last pod, the Bucks had evened the Finals at 2 games each; between Giannis’ miracle recovery and digging back from down 0-2 that seemed far-fetched enough, but little did we know how much more magic the Bucks had in them, or that Giannis still had an All-Time game still in the bag. MVP, DPOY, Champion and Finals MVP; those are lofty accomplishments Giannis, welcome to the NBA’s most elite club. Then it was on to Draft Day, never a disappointment for the hardcore NBA fan, but when your team hits on a pick or two, it’s even better; spoiler, a lot of Warriors draft talk upcoming. And of course, we saw Russ go to the Lakers, and it’s anyone’s guess what will happen there. Less than a week later, NBA Free Agency started, as the offseason action hits its peak. On today’s show, we’re still in awe of what we saw way back in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, as Giannis unexpectedly returned to the court just 7 days after suffering a traumatic knee injury, and suddenly, with their superstar back, it looks like the Bucks might make it a series. And this wasn’t Willis Reed; Giannis put up monster double-doubles while still noticeably hobbled in Phoenix, yet still, as Game 3 approached, the Suns were headed to Milwaukee up 2 games to none. In Phoenix, Chris Paul was running the show, doing pretty much whatever he wanted, while outside of Giannis the Bucks just couldn’t get it going. But a little home cooking goes a long ways, and just as the Bucks rebounded on their own court in GMs 3 & 4, the Suns struggled on the road. Just like that, what was thought to be Suns in 4, turned into a best of 3, and as I’m sure everybody has heard, the series doesn’t really start til the road team gets a win. So here we are, the Bucks back in business and Giannis showing no indication that he was ever hurt at all, but with the Suns holding home court, there’s a good chance we may even get a Game 7! Yeah, this may not have been the Finals we wanted, but it certainly is showing the potential to turn into a great one! On today’s show, we’re back to put a bow on the Conference Championships and look ahead to the Finals, breaking down the Suns’ decisive series win over the Clippers, and the battle of attrition between the Hawks and Bucks. Chris Paul deservedly gets a ton of credit for carrying this Suns team to the Finals, and all recognition to Devin Booker, DeAndre Ayton and the Suns’ role players as well, of course, but it was fitting that in the deciding Game 6, it was CP3 who had the big night clinching at Staples Center, while the Clippers and Paul George faded away at home. Meanwhile, the Bucks/Hawks series had a promising start, as the Hawks stole Game 1 and it looked like we might be in for a true battle, but freak injuries to both Trae and Giannis completely changed the dynamics of the series. We never got the chance to see it play out, but even against a deeper, more experienced team, with what Trae Young had been doing all postseason, it became hard to even consider him an underdog, and it felt like the Hawks had a real chance. Instead, we saw KM and Jrue and Brook pick up the slack and propel the Bucks into the Finals. But the million dollar question remains; will Giannis play in the big series? On today’s show, it’s a wrap on Round 1 of the NBA Playoffs following our only Game 7 Sunday, as the Clippers knock off the Mavs, and we’re taking a look at all of the outstanding performances, the major letdowns and the most intriguing storylines from each of the opening series.
