On today’s show, it’s full speed ahead into the NBA Playoffs with Round 1 already underway, and in some ways, this year’s postseason could be marking the dawning of a new era in the Association. There’s the cohort of up and coming teams with young, dynamic cores who should become fixtures in the Playoffs for years to come, teams like the Celtics, the Grizzlies, the Timberwolves, the Hawks and maybe even the Pelicans, if Zion ever plays for them again. Then you’ve got your young guns, budding stars looking to make their marks on the big stage, like Ja, who already plays like a veteran, or Tyrese Maxey, stepping up as the #2 for the Sixers, or Anthony Edwards, who made a splash in his Playoff debut leading the T-Wolves to a Game 1 upset. In Golden State, a splash has turned into a Poole Party, as Steph and Klay welcome a new Splash Brother in Jordan Poole, and the 3 guard lineup has proven deadly early vs the Nuggets. And then there’s Jason Tatum, who on Easter Sunday in a game for the ages, broke the hearts of KD, Kyrie and the Nets. So yeah, with KD struggling, Harden looking washed, perennial All-NBA guys like AD, Russ, Dame, Kawhi, and PG home watching and most importantly, no LeBron, things are looking a little different, but somehow no less exciting. On today’s show, 82 games in an almost back to normal NBA season is in the books, and as we enter the Playoffs with a handful of legitimate contenders but no clear cut favorite, I can’t help but draw a parallel to this past NFL season. Yes, I’m gonna bring up that P word again, parity, the bane of those who love dynasties and the “clash of titans” championship matchups. And maybe the subtext here is unintentionally dismissive of the Phoenix Suns’ franchise record breaking season, but I count at least 7 teams who could hoist the trophy in the end, and from where I’m sitting, comfortably, on my couch, that suggests some juicy matchups along the way. 

But what differentiates party in the NBA and the NFL is the 7 game series, the truest test of the superior team. In the NFL it’s one and done, and we get the whole “any given Sunday” factor, but in the NBA, with the 7 game series, there are no flukes. The better team almost always comes out on top. So yeah, NFL parity gave us the Rams as champs and left me feeling a bit unresolved as to who the best team I saw last year was, but I’m counting on the NBA’s tourney actually clarifying the issue. Give me Sixers/Nets, or Warriors/Suns or Bucks vs anyone, and 7 games will tell us which team is better. On today’s show, the NFL offseason shuffle slows down a bit, but not before Bruce Arians  retires and Tyreek Hill heads to Miami for the hometown bag, and now that you stop to take a look around, the League looks a lot different than it did just a few weeks ago. On paper, you have your Broncos, your Raiders and your Browns going all in and ready to become contenders, and your Seahawks, your Saints, your Chiefs and your Packers, who could be standing pat, making lateral moves, or worse yet, possibly regressing, and that doesn’t even touch on moves by the other 25 teams. So strap in, we still have the draft and about 5 months of speculation before we actually see anyone play real football again, plenty of time to convince yourself that your team really can win it all. Meanwhile, the NBA season is down to about 5 games before the Playoffs, and we have pockets of intrigue all through the seedings. The top of the East is loaded with contenders still shuffling for the top seed, but aside from that, we have a pretty clear idea of who our Play-in teams will be, and a rough idea of where everyone slots in. In the West, the Suns have the best overall record locked down, and the Grizzlies have the 2 seed, but 3-6 should shuffle around and at the bottom, the Lakers are just trying to get in. The Playoffs start in a little more than a week but the excitement in the NBA has already begun. And none of that even begins to touch on the rest of the sports action over the next few weeks, and you know we’re watching March Madness, the return of MLB, the Masters and all the other glorious diversions the spring sports calendar brings us. On today’s show, the NFL offseason continues to dominate the sports landscape despite the fact that the next game is still 6 months away, but at this point I think we’ve come to realize that for some fans, player movement is more exciting than the actual regular season match-ups themselves. There’s a season for the games, but there’s also a season for unbridled hope, unrealistic expectations and rampant speculation. Think about it; your team never wins it all, but in March when they pick up that high-priced free agent or make that blockbuster trade, or in June when they draft that #5 overall pick, there’s hope, and that hope will sustain you until Week 9 when you realize that your team is, after all that, still just trash. Picking up where we left off, last week Tom Brady decides the other QBs are getting too much attention and, somehow unsurprisingly, unretires after 6 long weeks out of the League, and even March Madness brackets get overshadowed. But it didn’t stop there, not with free agency underway as of Thursday, and the hits just kept on coming. The biggest signings so far have seen a lot of talent head to the AFC, with Za'Darius Smith going to the Ravens, Von Miller to the Bills, Chandler Jones to the Raiders and Myles Jack to the Steelers, and that doesn’t include the trades that sent Khalil Mack to the Chargers, Amari Cooper to the Browns and Davonte Adams to the Raiders, but the topper came on Friday in a news dump announcing the move that sent controversial superstar QB Deshaun Watson to the Browns. Meanwhile in the NBA, we’re down to it, just about 10 games remaining in the regular season so it’s time to take a serious look at which contenders to take seriously, and who has the superstar capable of taking their team all the way. Plus, Steph goes down, and the show must stop to assess the situation. On today’s show, the NFL shrugs and the sports world moves, as the League’s off-season drama comes at us fast and furious. We were prepared to settle into our NBA groove, get into some talk about a dynamic and very fluid Playoff picture, look at some injured stars who could be on their way back to the court, talk about Nets/Sixers last nite, even deep dive into CJ McCollum’s fit with the Pelicans and more, but no, the NFL always has to have all the attention. The big news day was led by the announcement of the mega-deal that would keep Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. But just about an hour later Rodgers would have to relinquish the spotlight, as Russell Wilson got his wish and was shipped out to Denver, with the Broncos ending up the beneficiaries of his unhappiness in Seattle. On today’s show, Gaber and I are catching up on a busy few weeks in the sports world, with another NFL season in the books and the NBA season entering the home stretch. First we have to get in the way-back machine to wrap up yet another NFL season for this pod, following the Rams’ comeback win over the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, and two weeks after the Big Game I’m left feeling like this whole season still feels unresolved. By all metrics and standards of the NFL, and hopefully not taking too much away from them, the Rams did everything required to be called champs, but I still didn’t feel like they were the best team this year. But then, really, looking back, was any team actually the best this year? This was the ultimate season in parity, with the Bills, the Cardinals, the Packers, the Ravens, the Patriots, the Titans, and yes, the Rams, all at moments this year looking like they may be, the One. But now, it’s on the offseason soap opera that is player movement, and we’ll be all over that of course, but in the meantime, there’s plenty of NBA to get into. With a little more than a quarter of the season remaining, we’ve got star players like KD, PG13 and Kawhi presumably returning from injuries and others like Harden and Ben Simmons settling in on new teams, so the push to the Playoffs looks to be exciting. But today, we’ll pick up at Steph Curry’s explosion at the All-Star Game and sort through all kinds of assorted detritus and errata as we hit the Playoff stretch.
