Capsized took eight years to reach a shelf.
Charlotte rowed at Community Rowing in Boston and then at Syracuse, moved to LA for television, and stumbled into a coaching job at RowLA that she's held ever since. Capsized started as a 55-page TV pilot she never finished, became a novel after a stranger at a house party told her it should be, and is now back in development as a series at Hulu.
We get into how the crooked path actually went: writing a different book first to get through the door, cutting fifty pages on an agent's say-so, and the difference between why you start something and why you keep coming back to it for eight years.
She also walks through her five keys to writing a rowing novel — get up early, pace yourself, build your team, know there's no race day, and train off a plan — plus why publishing feels like a void to someone used to watching her split in real time, and a wall-sit story from RowLA that explains the whole sport in about ninety seconds.
