Trudeau government announces the purchase of the F35 fighter plane years after declaring they never would. - this follows the announcement of surface ships for the RCN and the spending $400 million to purchase missile defence systems from the U.S. for Ukraine. Canada's military has had no such missile system for many years.
The announced purchase of F35 fighter planes to replace Canada's half-century old CF18's and 15 warships {frigates} for the Royal Canadian Navy is running into complaints of too much spending. This while our NATO allies are making it clear to the federal government they expect Canada to increase its military defence spending substantially.
What do we gain with the announced purchases and what does the CAF still require?

A Vancouver man plans to open the city's first crack/heroin/fentanyl commercial outlet, although the sale of such drugs remains a criminal offence. On January 31, B.C. will decriminalize personal-use quantities of heroin, fentanyl, meth, cocaine and MDMA. Posession of less than 2.5 grams of those drugs will no longer be considered illegal.

Federal immigration ministern Sean Fraser declares Canada needs more newcomers. Sets immigration number at 500,000 by 2025. - Our guest's organization, the Association of Canadian Studies, recently released information from a national poll conducted by Leger on reaction to Liberals immigration numbers. 75% of Canadians said they remain very or somewhat concerned the increased number of newcomers to Canada may negatively impact on already stressed health care, housing and social services.

As the war between Ukraine and Russia begins its second calendar year Putin announced and violated a 36 hour ceasefire January 6 and 7 over Orthodox Christmas which Ukraine president Zelenskyy argued was just a Putin ruse to resupply Russian troops and stop the advances of Ukraine's military. Meanwhile the U.S., France and Germany announce more battlefield armoured vehicles for Ukraine but stop short of the heavy battle tanks Ukraine is asking for. Canada has delivered four M777 Howitzers to Ukraine meanwhile. We feature a year-starting interview with Ukraine's Ambassador to Canada.
We will also ask the Ambassador to comment on the fact this is the 3rd anniversary of the shooting down by Iran of Ukraine Airlines Flight PS 752 with dozens of Canadian citizens and permanent residents onboard.

Today marks the 3rd anniversary of Iran shooting down Ukraine Airlines Flight 752 over Tehran claiming more than 170 lives, including 138 who had ties to Canada. 55 were Canadian citizens, 30 were permanent residents of Canada.
