  • Apr 27: Lawyer Sandra Zisckind, lawsuit against "poisoned antisemitic learning and working environment," at TMU.

Three weeks ago we spoke with Toronto Metropolitan University Jewish student Emma and her Jewish professor and our program economics contributor Eric Kam about blatant antisemitism Jewish students at TMU are subjected to. Since then a lawsuit has been launched by a student and former employee of TMU against the university claiming $1.3 million in damages arguing TMU has become a "poisoned antisemitic learning and working environment."

Last November Toronto law firm Diamond and Diamond initiated a class action lawsuit against Toronto Metropolitan University and its student union alleging both groups repeatedly have failed to address a "well-documented history of antisemitism on the TMU campus." This lawsuit represents all current Jewish TMU students, as well as Jewish students who attended TMU between 1998 and 2021.

Guest: Sandra Zisckind, founding partner, at Diamond and Diamond LLP (DiamondLaw.ca)

The Taylor Swift domination of pop music. New release Tortured Poets Department with more than a dozen unexpected tracks. Why Taylor Swift? Other acts who matched or came close to matching her appeal, current and/or past. And her legion of international 'Swifties' fans. Name origin and why do they wear the number 13?

Also, we get to speak with an actual Swiftie. Taylor, the aptly named sister of our show’s technical producer, gives the fan’s perspective on the draw of Taylor Swift.

Guests: Alan Cross. Host of the syndicated The Ongoing History of New Music and A Journal of Musical Things. New podcast: Uncharted crime and mayhem in the music industry.

Professor Sylvain Charlebois, @foodprofessor, posts to X/Twitter about online posters and calls to organize a "Steal from Loblaws Day" on May 12. Professor Charlebois reminds "this is not only ridiculous. It's criminal."

We will, on this program, describe this as an outageous attempt to organize a 'national day of looting.'

    Then:

What do you say about the attempt to organize a "Steal from Loblaws Day" across Canada? Do you believe you have a responsibility to intercede if any theft occurs in your presence?

Guest: Professor Sylvain Charlebois, director of the Agri Foods lab at Dalhousie University.

    And: Callers.

Usually we might expect national reaction to a federal budget to have run its course several days following the budget's release. Not so this time as this past week's budget remains a topic of direct engagement and challenge. From doctors to Canada's business community, the federal budget is being hammered as a prime jewel of financial misfires.

Guest: Professor Eric Kam. Macroeconomics. Toronto Metropolitan University.

Slightly more than 1/3rd say numbers are about right, 7% said numbers are too low and 17% expressed no opinion.

In your view are Canada's immigration numbers too high and impact too heavily on healthcare, housing and social programs, or would you and your family benefit from an increase in the annual influx of newcomers to Canada?
