For Pretty Brown Flowers : " When I wrote this piece I envisioned myself in a rose garden I stumble upon in the neighborhood. I dreamt of all the beautiful black Queens trapped in a maze of mediocrity. We call it the ghetto. All the mothers and daughters of my past, present and future. Their beautiful eyes and hourglass shapes. The stories they yearned to tell and the books trapped in their hearts and minds that tell a thousand lies because they've forgotten their truths. In a world of so many colors, all I could see were the pretty brown flowers that no one of importance seemed to notice. The ones I yearned to touch the petals of. My hope for anyone that reads this is that they leave the pages having found themselves to be a pretty brown flower." _artfulSTEPH
