The RPG Academy: DETENTION- LIVE episodes

  • Welcome to Detention, Episode 7!
Hello Academaniacs! Welcome to a new bonus feature on The RPG Academy, Detention!

We were so happy to hear good feedback about this bonus content that we decided to make more!
In this episode, Caleb and Scott are joined by special guest Michael, from...well...here.  As usual, these episodes are a little more rough around the edges, with less editing to reflect a more conversational tone. They also include more of the tangents, bad jokes, and adult language that we tend to use when we're hanging out and having fun.
Detention is sponsored by Battle Bards! Be sure to check out their newest albums and don't forget to use our exclusive coupon code when making a purchase. Overall, we learned with this episode to not record when two thirds of the cast is dead tired and more than a little punch drunk. With that in mind...
In Extra Curricular, things are scattered and chaotic. We talk about the loss of Mister Wilder, even if it is a few weeks old (we recorded this when it was more recent, sorry). Scott mixes up Big Trouble in Little China with something else. He then brings up the fuse to the potential powder keg that is his home life and talks about the crazy shenanigans happening in his home D&D game. Michael brings up the show Dark Matter. Scott talks about his indie improv group and we try to help with its name. Caleb can't think of anything so Michael brings up AcadeCon. And then there is a heated debate about which door to pick to get the best prize. In Used Books, Michael shares a campaign that he's attempted multiple times without the success he's been hoping for and we talk about possible solutions. And in Class Review, we discuss the Barbarian. We focus on how the mechanics have changed through editions and talk about the different ways this class can be played.

Hello students! Welcome to a new bonus feature on The RPG Academy, Detention!
We were so happy to hear good feedback about this bonus content that we decided to make more!
In this episode, Caleb and Scott are joined by special guest Kevin Smith from Melvin Smif's Geekery! As usual, these episodes are a little more rough around the edges, with less editing to reflect a more conversational tone. They also include more of the tangents, bad jokes, and adult language that we tend to use when we're hanging out and having fun.
We start off with a special offer from Battle Bards. Remember that when you use those codes, you will use the actual numbers. So that's a 1, 2, or 3 after the special secret code word. In Extra Curricular, Kevin talks about kicking off his new home game, and we dig into the relationship between 4E and 5E Dungeons and Dragons. Scott talks about weddings, comic conventions, and being social. Caleb talks about reading the Nightside series of books but doesn't do it justice. It's like he didn't prepare for this at all. Slacker. In Dead Campaign, we throw out that title and decide to call it Used Books instead. We have a theme, after all, and we are professionals. So in Used Books, Kevin shares a campaign about private investigators in Eberron and we talk briefly about how to keep a campaign going in spirit even after it has ended. And in Class Review, it's time to discuss that bastion of law and order, the Paladin. We talk in detail about older versions of the class and its relation to alignment, a concept that is not as important as it used to be. We discuss mechanics and how they've evolved over the years, but we consistently return to the philosophy of what it means to play a Paladin and how it relates to alignment. And we touch on where to find the themes of the Paladin in other games.

  • Welcome to Detention, Episode 5!
    https://therpgacademy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Detention-Ep-5.mp3
Hello students! Welcome to a new bonus feature on The RPG Academy, Detention!
We were so happy to hear good feedback about this bonus content that we decided to make more!
In this episode, Caleb and Scott are joined by special guest Christopher from the Sharkbone podcast! As usual, these episodes are a little more rough around the edges, with less editing to reflect a more conversational tone. They also include more of the tangents, bad jokes, and adult language that we tend to use when we're hanging out and having fun.
In Extra Curricular, Christopher shares some personal tragedy and talks about moving to Ohio. Bummer. But he redeems himself by not knowing geography. Scott brings up early preparations for AcadeCon and we talk about story structure in games. The pesky ghost of Jim McClure is mentioned but not summoned. Caleb starts a tangent about cartoons (which Christopher takes back a decade) and then digs into binging Limitless on Netflix. In Dead Campaigns, Christopher shares a campaign that did not survive the first play session. We also discuss ways to handle the situation when a player makes a challenging choice during character generation. And in Class Review, we move on from the four stereotypical classes and discuss the Warlock. We look at the class from its 3.5 roots to its current version in 5E and get into the flavor and mechanics that it delivers to players. We get super nerdy here, and a lot of math comes up. If you want to see Christopher flex his math skill, check out what he wrote about warlocks here. And we have a difficult time finding warlocks in other games, but we do find their theme or flavor.

  • Welcome to Detention, Episode 4!
    https://therpgacademy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Detention-Ep-4.mp3
Hello students! Welcome to a new bonus feature on The RPG Academy, Detention!
We were so happy to hear good feedback about this bonus content that we decided to make more!
In this episode, Caleb and Scott are joined by special guest Quinn Wilson from the Swallows of the South podcast! As usual, these episodes are a little more rough around the edges, with less editing to reflect a more conversational tone. They also include more of the tangents, bad jokes, and adult language that we tend to use when we're hanging out and having fun.
In Extra Curricular, Scott talks about maps, Quinn is the smartest guy in the room, and I read a book. We get into Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and there are some very general spoilers. And we don't exactly shower it with love. Consider yourself warned. In Dead Campaigns, Quinn shares a story about a family game that attempted to revive itself, but then was committed to its ultimate demise. And we jump off on a tangent about parentage in Exalted. And there's a special appearance from Quinn's dog. Lastly, in Class Review, we finish off the classic 4 person party and discuss the Wizard. We all share our personal views on the class and what we like about it. Spoiler,  there's a lot more that we don't like. We also definitively prove that bards are better than wizards, if only through a cruel joke at my expense. A great discussion is had about wizards and their roles in other games too.
And finally, stand by for bloopers, brought to you by 10 dads.

Hello students! Welcome to a new bonus feature on The RPG Academy, Detention!
We were so happy to hear good feedback about this bonus content that we decided to make more!
In this episode, Michael joins Scott and me join to talk about all kinds of nonsense. As usual, these episodes are a little more rough around the edges, with less editing to reflect a more conversational tone. They also include more of the tangents, bad jokes, and adult language that we tend to use when we're hanging out and having fun.
In Extra Curricular, we talk about the Netflix Original show Stranger Things. In Dead Campaigns, Michael shares the story of an early campaign that he ran and the ways that youthful excitement (and ignorance) impacts a campaign. Also, there's a vampire pirate ghost lich. And in Class Review, we move on in that classic 4 member balanced party to discuss the Cleric.

Hello students! Welcome to a new bonus feature on The RPG Academy, Detention!
We were so happy to hear good feedback about this bonus content that we decided to make more!
In this episode, Scott and Matt join me to talk about all kinds of nonsense. As usual, these episodes are a little more rough around the edges, with less editing to reflect a more conversational tone. They also include more of the tangents, bad jokes, and adult language that we tend to use when we're hanging out and having fun.
This week, Extra Curricular Activities includes such topics as Harry Dresden, DBZ, and Matt's new podcast Zeros Talking Heroes (always remember, 3 2 1 Friendship!) In Dead Campaigns, Matt shares his ill-fated adventures with the Violet Storm. And in Class Review, we discuss everyone's favorite backstabber, the Rogue.
Also, the ghost of Jim McClure seems to be haunting this episode. If only there was someone we could call...
    Lastly, long live Blaze Lockstep.
