The RPG Academy: DETENTION- LIVE

Hello Academaniacs! Welcome to Detention!

Detention is sponsored by BattleBards and Easy Roller Dice.

In this episode, Scott and Matt ride solo - together.

Detention LIVE is the new weekly LIVE talk show format podcast from The RPG Academy.

Extra curricular is where the hosts discuss things happening outside of their RPG lives.

Hello Academaniacs! Welcome to the long-awaited return of Detention!

I guess we've good for the past 5 months. Well, 3 months. Because we recorded this episode in January 2017! Don't think too hard about the recording and release schedule. Podcasting is all timey-wimey.

Detention is sponsored by BattleBards and Easy Roller Dice.

In this episode, Caleb and Scott are joined by special guest Taylor from Game Closet and Riverhouse Games. As usual, these episodes are a little more rough around the edges, with less editing to reflect a more conversational tone. They also include more of the tangents, bad jokes, and adult language that we tend to use when we're hanging out and having fun.

As you now know, Taylor joined the hallowed halls of the RPG Academy earlier this year. When this episode was recorded, this marvelous event had just been announced. Again, timey-wimey. Deal with it.

In Extra Curricular, Caleb talks about trying to figure out how to hack existing systems to get what he wants for a new game and then giving up and just designing a new system. (And as future Caleb writes this, let it be known that the game he wrote this for fell through before it even started. But the system is still good and will make a play test appearance at AcadeCon). Scott talks about the impending doom from the Smarty Bomb. And Taylor talks about prepping for con games.

In Used Books, Taylor talks about musical inspiration for games. We also discuss how tools used in game prep don't always transition over into tools for use during game play.

In Class Review, we discuss the Druid at great length. Sadly, even after pushing off this Review as long as possible, Matt was not able to join us to talk about his favorite class. Luckily for us, though, Taylor is extremely passionate about Druids and delivered a fantastic conversation! We talk about how the evocative images of the natural world can translate into describing magical events in the game; how brutal and truly neutral nature is; how amazing and useful Wild Shape is out of combat; and how many examples of Druids we can find in other games.

Detention is sponsored by BattleBards and Easy Roller Dice.

In this episode, Caleb and Scott are joined by special guest Quinn from Swallows of the South. As usual, these episodes are a little more rough around the edges, with less editing to reflect a more conversational tone. They also include more of the tangents, bad jokes, and adult language that we tend to use when we're hanging out and having fun.

In Extra Curricular, Caleb talks about his new job and Emerald City (Which future Caleb who is writing this doesn't like. Big surprise.) Scott talks about Lawful and Orderly, our new live game that has been going very well on our Twitch stream. And Quinn talks about graduating and going on interviews. He also teases us about some secret projects.

In Used Books, shares a tale of disaster that happened when one of his players took over as GM in a home-brew world. We discuss the importance of a session zero and the virtues of teleporting pirates.

In Class Review, we discuss the almighty Bard. It is generally agreed that the 5E version of the Bard is the best, and the Lore College is the best of the best. We also dip into the debate of pretend vs reality in role playing games.

Be sure to also listen for how Scott wins every escape room ever and the invention of a new term "D&D AF D&D".

Hello Academaniacs! Welcome to a new bonus feature on The RPG Academy, Detention!

We were so happy to hear good feedback about this bonus content that we decided to make more!

Detention is sponsored by Battle Bards! Be sure to check out their newest albums and don't forget to use our exclusive coupon code when making a purchase.

Extra Curricular starts with debating how Caleb says things. Scott shares his travel experiences and we come up with a new take on the classic dystopian future trope. Quinn talks about school and karaoke and we get onto a target about cosplay. Caleb talks about The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. In Used Books, Caleb shares the home-brew world of Sanctuary and the game that didn't get past session zero. This opens the discussion to encounter balance, world building, and ways to get players more excited about and invested in session zero. We also talk about using session zero type questions to warm up before a game session and serve as a reminder or primer for important details. And in Class Review, we discuss the Sorcerer. Caleb has a very different opinion than the rest of the group. This leads to a deep discussion about what we like and don't like about the class and what makes it interesting.

Hello Academaniacs! Welcome to a new bonus feature on The RPG Academy, Detention!

We were so happy to hear good feedback about this bonus content that we decided to make more!

In this episode, Caleb and Scott are joined by special guest Kendall from the Redemption Podcast.  As usual, these episodes are a little more rough around the edges, with less editing to reflect a more conversational tone. They also include more of the tangents, bad jokes, and adult language that we tend to use when we're hanging out and having fun.

Detention is sponsored by Battle Bards! Be sure to check out their newest albums and don't forget to use our exclusive coupon code when making a purchase.

In Extra Curricular, Kendall talks about preparing for Grand Con and shares a teaser about one of the games he'll be running at AcadeCon 2016. Scott goes on a shopping trip for his sister's latest wedding and forgets what he'll be doing in the wedding party. We also wax poetically about adult arcades and complain about the exchange rate of tickets to prizes. Caleb shares his struggle with preparing games, and the gang discusses why prep is difficult and ways to solve the problem. Also, last minute prep is the best minute of prep. In Used Books, Kendall shares a 3 year D&D campaign full of excitement and betrayal that ended with a shocking attack roll. The hidden secret of the monster manual is revealed, as is the truth behind what actually makes a good challenge in a game. And it is decreed that raw dungeon delving combat is the sherbet of RPGs. In Class Review, it's time to talk about the Ranger, who may or may not be the tiny dancer of D&D. Of course, focus is on the new Revised Ranger, which you can read about more about here. The boys break down the new features and get very excited about what's there. They also dig into the history of the Ranger through recent editions and talk about the aspects of the class that make it really weird.
