Kim Hamblin -“Shut up and make art!”
Kim is co-founder/owner of Roshambo ArtFarm, Art & Science Cider & Wine, and the Wildwood Music Fest.
Kim grew up in the midwest. Her single mother juggled much to make ends meet. From that upbringing, Kim learned the great entrepreneurial skill of adaptability. Her willingness to be comfortable living on the edge, to pivot when necessary combined with trusting the universe to provide remains a solid base for her to follow her passion and while making that passion into money.
Her current companies are a culmination of her cut-paper-assembly art and the science and art behind wine, cider, and music.

Favorite Kim Quotes:
“Shut up and make art!”
“You just kind of keep going with something until it stops working.”
“I’ve been self employed so long…it just kind of breeds resilience.”
“Not to sound too wee-wee or woo-woo or whatever, but the universe feels like it kind of takes care of me. I follow my passion an— it always seems to work out. Like I might fly close to the sun, but it doesn’t ever really burn me.”
“Keep pushing…sometimes if you just push that little mini-failure there will be something great on the other side.”
“You know you can overthink about how you are going to do things in ten years… and you have this big plan and you are going to do-do-do… but you aren’t actually doing it. You’ve got to start doing it.”

Karen Harding - Portland, Oregon Restaurants and Bar Owner - “Your Story Matters So Be Mindful How You Live It.”
Karen is the owner-operator of the several restaurants and “The Alleyway Bar” in Portland, Oregon. Her oldest, most established restaurant is “Cup & Saucer Cafe” in Portland, Oregon. It’s nearly 33 years old.
Karen left home at a young age with conviction to take care of herself. Her story portrays that with willingness to try, conviction to do your best at any given moment with courage to ask questions of those who know more than you, along with learning from failure while figuring things out as you go leads to confidence.
Favorite Karen Quotes:
“I didn’t have a plan, but I was open to… wide open to trying things and then I just, when I did try things I worked as hard as I could. I was sure that I was going to be fine. I was totally…compelled to do more of it…”
“You’re gonna do things wrong. Ask for help…have the courage to ask someone that knows more than you….It doesn’t mean you’re dumb or anything. It just means you’re smart…it will save you five years and a lot of money.”
“Your story matters so be mindful how you live it.”

Erin Stephenson is founder and co-owner of a boutique lodging company. They have two brands that include the 3rd Street Flats and The Atticus Hotel, a luxury lifestyle hotel in downtown, wine-country, McMinnville, OR.
In these episodes, Erin highlights the intentional process that took her in-the-shower idea from idea to reality.
She and her partners were David in a sea of Goliaths!
From obtaining an SBA loan, to raising funds for the down payment, to creating a team of individuals who shined in their roles, to working together, to making massive, unavoidable cuts in their budget, see how the specific, detailed business plan that Erin wrote laid a foundation that carried the weight of all the obstacles that came their way.
The words of wisdom that Erin would write in the stars if she could are extractions from her personal and business life experience.
Her dreaming, planning, and scheming combined with her “doing” evidence what she believes——
that ideas that seem like, “that could never happen” can and do happen.
You just have to chase the idea. If it’s not going to work, prove that it’s not going to work, by working to make your idea reality. It’s the only way to know.
The Atticus Hotel is proof. It’s creation process was complete with the heartache that led to the frustration that led to the creativity that ultimately led to an incredible product!
There is a reason that USA Today named “The Atticus Hotel” as the top hotel in wine country and Trip Advisor names it as one of the top 25 hotels in America. Most importantly, there is a reason that guests write the reviews they do.
See photos of The Atticus Hotel on Instagram at the “The Ruthie Podcast” and then be sure to book your hotel stay in wine country. See, in person, how Erin and team leveraged the excitement of the community. It’s straight-up genius!
You can follow the link below to see one of the community challenges in the show notes.
Through her lifetime, Erin continues to involve herself in all kinds of philanthropic efforts as she is constantly working to give back to her community. Most recently she was nominated to be on Oregon Tourism Commission.
Remember to check out The Ruthie Podcast Song playlist on Spotify. Not only will you get to hear Dolly Pardon’s “9 to 5”…you’ll get to hear several other songs that speak to Erin’s journey in bringing the Atticus Hotel to life. And reach out to Erin if you would like an insider’s tour or if you would like to pick her brain about starting a hotel of your own.
Favorite Erin Quotes:
“You create the space and the Universe will fill it.”
“Everything is possible until you find out that it’s not and you’ve just got to chase it. The ideas that seem like ‘that could never happen,’ Well, you know what? Actually, it can and it does—if you just chase it. Don’t assume it won’t work. Prove it won’t work and then move on. Let it go and move on.”
“So every time we had to make one of those cuts, we just got creative…I think adversity bred creativity that gave us a better product on the other side.”
“The heartbreak over the piece of property that we didn’t get… led us to the frustration that led us to the one that we did [get].”

Maria Stuart - R. Stuart & Company Winery Co-Founder, Owner-Operator
Meet Maria…Between the time Maria interviewed and the release of this podcast, Maria passed away after she completed her journey with cancer. Maria is a timeless treasure to all who crossed paths with her and to all those who are yet to experience the results of her innumerable efforts to make this world a better, happier, more vibrant place. She was born and raised in Michigan and eventually made her way to the International Pinot Noir Celebration where she was taken with Oregon, the Willamette Valley and local winemaker, Rob Stuart. Maria moved to Oregon and, in time, she and Rob married. Maria worked in several marketing and event planning positions in the industry before Rob and her co-founded the R. Stuart & Company Winery where she became well known and loved for the inclusive environment she created for growers, staff, and customers alike. They opened one of the first wine bars in historic downtown McMinnville, OR. The R. Stuart Wine Bar continues to be a favorite for locals and visitors alike. Maria ran blog, “The Life and Time of a Pinot Mom” where she expressed her love of wine, cooking, bringing people together, and those she lived most for… her husband and her children, Joe, Ben, and Charlotte.
Favorite Maria Quotes:
“If it’s one thing I have learned, it’s: keep it simple. Like what else matters? I have had periods of my life where I’ve very high expectations for myself and for the people around me like in my business and, and for my children and one of the things I now know, of course, and embrace and want to pass on to other people is that things don’t have to be perfect to be wonderful…you know a lot things are of imperfectly wonderful…and that gives them their own charm and their own joy so I’m happy to let go of a lot of that pressure.” -Maria Stuart
“When I first came here to the first IPNC that I went to, the International Pinot Noir Celebration, I saw these people living this life of these beautiful bucolic lives of owning a winery and making wine and taking care of people and cooking them good food and I’m like, “That’s what I want to do. That’s what I want my life to be.” - Maria Stuart
*It’s of favorite quote because then Maria went out and created what she wanted her life to be.
You lived fully Maria. Thank you! To where you are, thank you!! -Ruthie
