This week, as part one of two episodes, I’m interviewing Marie Jess. As the fourth of eleven children, she was raised in Texas, most often homeless, a lifestyle labeled as “another Gypsy Adventure” by her mother. After moving to Utah and California, Marie became no stranger to life’s hurts…but one tragedy struck deeper than all the rest. In processing her grief, Marie dedicated her life to the drug and addiction treatment and recovery space. She determined that whatever she did volunteer wise, it was not going to just check off the proverbial box that she volunteered. She insists on making a difference. Eventually her passion for volunteering led to a paid position as Director of ACES (Assessment Counseling Educational Services), her current position. We talk in this episode of Marie’s growing up, the traumas that changed her, and addiction and the recovery journey.
Additionally, Marie volunteers and runs WOWUtah.org, a year long transformative program for women who are out of crisis. In Part 2 (Next week’s episode), we discuss more about of how this program facilitates greater personal awareness, respect, and confidence of participating mentees so they might become familiar with stronger interpersonal skills to empower them to create a life for themselves that they actually want.
