Just over a week ago, an explosion on 39th Street in South Oak Park destroyed a home and claimed the life of 62-year-old Karl Lysinger. Investigators say he was both the perpetrator and the victim of the blast.

In this episode, I share my personal experience of hearing the explosion from my studio a mile away, reflect on the years of conflict that surrounded the property, and look at the deeper issue—mental health struggles that too often go unspoken until it’s too late.

As a certified Mental Health First Aid responder, I talk about the warning signs, the importance of community connection, and the tools available when someone is at a breaking point, including the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

This is more than a story about one man or one neighborhood—it’s a call for compassion, vigilance, and action so that no one in our community has to suffer in silence.
