Sacramento fatal hit-and-run investigation

Sacramento Police are investigating a deadly vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash that happened Saturday night near Norwood Avenue and Jessie Avenue in North Sacramento. An adult male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Two vehicles were involved — one remained while the second fled the scene. The Sacramento Police Major Collision Investigation Unit is handling the case.

South Sacramento pursuit ends in crash and vehicle fire

Sacramento County deputies arrested 33-year-old Ricky Harding after a vehicle pursuit Saturday night near 15th Avenue and 42nd Street. During the chase, Harding turned off his headlights and ran a stop sign at 8th Avenue and 43rd Street, colliding with a Sacramento Police patrol vehicle. Harding’s car later caught fire, and he attempted to flee on foot before being arrested. He is being held on $500,000 bail.

Sacramento County donation supports Bradshaw Animal Shelter

The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors approved a $359,823 donation from the estate of Robert W. Steger to support programs at the Bradshaw Animal Shelter. The funds will expand spay-and-neuter services and MASH mobile clinics, helping reduce unwanted litters and shelter overcrowding.

NEWS

A stabbing victim walked into Sacramento Fire Department Station 20 Thursday afternoon after being attacked at Hagginwood Park.

Police say the victim arrived around 4:30 p.m. on Rio Linda Boulevard and was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

Sacramento police have arrested 18-year-old John Cruz, a second suspect in the October Meadowview homicide that left 21-year-old Matthew Jhameil Anderson dead. Another suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting.

And in Rancho Cordova, a 14-year-old boy was arrested after leading officers on a 55-mph e-bike pursuit before surrendering on the American River Bike Trail.

The teen was booked into juvenile hall and his parents were cited.

CITY WATCH

This week marks National Weights and Measures Week, honoring the first U.S. weights and measures law signed by John Adams in 1799.

In Sacramento County, the Division of Weights and Measures investigates pricing complaints and checks store scanners, fuel pumps, packaged goods, and commercial scales.

Last year inspectors handled 97 consumer complaints, including 25 cases of overcharges.

Residents who believe they were overcharged can file a complaint with the county.

• Multiple shootings across Sacramento early Wednesday injured an Uber driver and forced the temporary closure of Highway 160 and southbound Interstate 5 near Richards Boulevard.
• Sacramento Police say the incident began around 5:30 a.m. near Dos Rios and Vine Streets, close to Smythe Academy of Arts and Sciences Middle School.
• Investigators say a sedan traveling along Highway 160 near Northgate Boulevard was shot at before the driver exited the freeway and called 911.
• The 51-year-old Uber driver, a father of two, was transported to UC Davis Medical Center and is now listed in stable condition.
• California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation because the shooting occurred on a freeway.
• Authorities say a person of interest is now in custody.

U.S. Military / Sacramento

• A Sacramento Army reservist, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert M. Marzan, is believed to have been killed in an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait, according to the Pentagon.
• Marzan served with the 103rd Sustainment Command and was among six U.S. service members killed when a fortified tactical operations center was struck.
• California flags are flying at half-staff at the State Capitol in his honor.

City Watch – Public Health

Sacramento County Public Health has confirmed two measles cases in unvaccinated children, bringing California’s 2026 measles total to 26 cases.

• One case was linked to travel to South Carolina, where an outbreak is underway.
• The second exposure source is still under investigation.
• Health officials say a potential exposure occurred at Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center on March 2nd between 6:55 and 7:14 a.m.
• Doctors say the MMR vaccine is about 97% effective after two doses.

• Sacramento County deputies arrested 23-year-old Mohammad Sadam Nahimi after an armed theft at a convenience store on Marconi Avenue. Deputies say he pointed a handgun at an employee and fired a shot at a passing vehicle before being detained. He later posted $125,000 bail.

NEWS

Two people were hospitalized after a stabbing Monday night in downtown Sacramento. The Sacramento Police Department says officers responded just before 9:45 p.m. to the 400 block of K Street. Both victims suffered stab wounds. Conditions have not been released. No suspect information is available.

UPDATE: One stabbing victim has died

Earlier, a reckless driving pursuit near Sixth and I streets ended after officers used a PIT maneuver and spike strips. The vehicle crashed through the sallyport doors at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The suspect fled on foot but was arrested. A pedestrian was struck during the chase; no serious injuries were reported.

Both incidents remain under investigation.

Sacramento County detectives have dismantled a large-scale illegal gambling network tied to eight illicit casinos operating out of residential neighborhoods across Northern California.

Authorities say the organization laundered more than $1.4 million dollars between January 2024 and July 2025.

Meanwhile — an officer-involved shooting is under investigation near the 8100 block of New Hope Road in South Sacramento County. The suspect was declared deceased at the scene. All deputies are safe and uninjured.

And in a follow-up to a February homicide — Sacramento Police have arrested 27-year-old Ray Howard in connection with a deadly shooting along West El Camino Avenue. The victim later died at a local hospital.

New charges have been filed against David Allen Funston as he was set to be released on parole yesterday. Prosecutors now accuse him in a 1996 kidnapping and child molestation case in Roseville. CDCR confirmed he was scheduled for release under California’s Elderly Parole Program but was instead turned over to Placer County authorities on a new arrest warrant. He’s expected to be arraigned next week.

And the Christian Brothers High School community is mourning the loss of freshman varsity basketball player Jaden DeJesus-Eves. The 6-foot-8 student-athlete was known as a gentle giant on and off the court. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

No major overnight incidents — but this week, officers responded to a fight near Truxel Rd and San Juan Rd where one suspect was arrested with an illegally concealed firearm.

Evidence of a shooting was also located near Watermist Way and Cancion St — no injuries reported.

At Del Paso Blvd and Arden Way, an occupied stolen vehicle was recovered and the driver arrested.

And in Central Sacramento, a cyclist fleeing a stop near North B St and Dos Rios St was detained on a probation violation warrant.

Sacramento County is marking two years of PAWS — Pets Aid & Wellness Services — a mobile vet program delivering prevention, vaccines, microchipping and basic care directly to underserved communities.

A Sacramento jury has convicted Song Landis of first-degree murder in a 2022 shooting along the Marconi Avenue corridor. He faces up to 75 years to life. Sentencing is set for May 8th.

In a separate case, 57-year-old Javier Arizmendi has been sentenced to 54 years to life for grooming and sexually assaulting a child he met on Xbox Live. He’ll be eligible for Elder Parole after serving about 20 years.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s officials are warning the public following the early parole of David Allen Funston — convicted of kidnapping and molesting multiple young children.
