It's the final episode of 2021! We all have a New Year's resolution on what we want to improve or achieve going into the following year. But we must ask the question: Are these resolutions getting redundant in promising to do certain things, only to abandon them immediately at the beginning of the year? Or is it New Year Resolutions that should focus on what makes us happy and how we can take away from something and build upon it moving forward? I want to say that 2021 was an awesome year for the podcast, and I'm so glad for everyone who's supported me through this journey. Happy New Year everyone! Cheers to 2022!

In the great words of Jason Derulo, "I'm Ridin' Solo." This week on The Safe Room, we discussed the one topic that brought some attention to me and how we may see plans to implement this proposal sooner than later, increasing the minimum wage. Andrea Horwath wants to raise the minimum wage to $20 by 2026 to provide equality in compensation for workers in Canada. I go over the implications for establishing this model in today's society and why they shouldn't proceed with this plan. Evaluating both perspectives, we critically analyze the role of employment (increased or stagnation), local businesses and their organizational structures, plus the hierarchies in occupations that require low skill and high skill. But an important question to ask is if the current status of the minimum wage is the issue we should be addressing? Or is it the lack of accessibility to find higher-wage jobs for people, especially racialized minorities in our communities?

Today, I want to take a deep dive behind the music... the sound that you've heard recently in my podcast intro and outros. On October 24, I officially a soundtrack for the podcast called First Lady, but some may be curious about how this track came to be and what it meant creating this song in the first place? I invited the man behind the production and assisted me throughout the final stages: Ricky Smalls. Ricky is a talented producer who has an excellent taste for varieties of sound and rhythm, which he elevates through his instrumentals. Today, we discussed coming together for the first time and how the process was working on the track. Plus, Ricky shares his backstory on what got him into production and engineering, the difference between self-taught and educated producers, the capitalistic structure of the exploitation of artists (Grammy Committee). In addition, a meaningful conversation of Men's Mental Health Awareness Month to address self-care and how toxic masculinity connects as a shield to protect a male's mental health. It was such a pleasure to have Ricky on this podcast and help make this track a reality. Who knows, I may do a breakdown video very soon.

This week, we have a pillar in the Jane Finch Community who continues to make an impact in the Arts and now Business side of things with the launch of ArtWorxTO. We welcome Nathan Baya to The Safe Room Podcast. Nathan is an individual who holds many titles and positions including artist, facilitator, community advocate, father, etc. But one thing that’s for sure is Nathan’s love and passion for his community and wanting to inspire upcoming artists to maximize their potential.

This week we talk about the appreciation and issue of community spaces. As much as we struggle to establish community spaces due to barriers such as financial resources with grants, educational tools such as financial literacy, and the lack for motivation. It’s important to acknowledge the spaces that reside today who are making a resounding impact and how to appreciate the work they have committed. This conversation is deep and comes from a retrospective of community voice but also the urgency to establish strategies such as implementing community grant programs and financial literacy in academic institutions.

It's the topic that has everyone talking. on November 5, 2021 the Astroworld Festival in Houston, TX ended in tragedy and controversy with the mass casualties and lack of organization/supervision of the festival. What an episode we have today! I'm joined with a young and upcoming artist in the Jane-Finch community that has taken her platform to higher echelons. Kibra Tesfaye, a Toronto musician whose style of music favours to smooth and jazzy vocals and instrumentals, shares her illustrious story as an artist in all aspects. Listen to her speak on how her songs are to symbolize strong messages advocating for self-love and activism in our communities. How she has grown from her first EP to her smash single "All That", and the impact she leaves on herself and those following her journey. With so much accomplished under her career in a small amount of time, she exudes veteran leadership to upcoming youth looking to state the voice in the music industry. Shon and Kibra also take the time to discuss all things music around the world. The moral of this conversation is to appreciate the craft you have established, and using our voice as a tool to narrate the lived experiences that we see every single day in our communities. We are back! This time, The Safe Room gives another opportunity for individuals to host their conversations on whatever topic they choose to discuss. Here's some background:

Ten individuals were selected after a "Best Caribbean Drink Ever" Tournament. In agreement, those individuals would get a chance to host The Safe Room personally. Our first ever special host was Kayla George, this week we have two special hosts: Deshondre Williams & Kevin Obeng. Kevin is a co-host with Shon to the Court Advantage Podcast, a sports podcast discussing the rumours and highlights in sports. Deshondre is a York University student studying in Kinesiology, with interests in anatomy and biology. In this episode, these gentlemen open the floor to the world of sports health: The importance of strength and conditioning for exercising, examining the practice of kinesiology and the human body, but of course, getting into everything sports. Let just say... it's a combination of Court Advantage and The Safe Room in one!

Following her resignation as party leader of the Green Party of Canada, Annamie Paul has gone off record to say this was the "worst period of her life". I offer the notion of The Forbidden Door, the divided line between community and politics. Paul's work prior to politics revolved heavily on international public affairs and public policy, with little political experience. What happens to those who try to step into the realm of politics? Politics have painted the simple narrative that you MUST have a choice of side: Left or Right. I breakdown how political parties, leaders, and politics in its entirety force those who enter in this field to follow a given ideology of how politics is suppose to be operated. In the end we ask the hard-hitting questions: Should this "forbidden door" be removed? How has society contributed to the gap between community and the state at large?

The Safe Room welcomes a new face to the podcast, but for some who watch the Court Advantage Podcast, he's an OG.
