It covers Pinchas’ zeal and Yah granting him a covenant of peace, a new census, the daughters of Tzlofchad making their request for an inheritance, the appointment of Yehoshua, and ends with the instructions for the Tamid, shabbat offerings, Rosh Chodesh and festival offerings.

This week’s parsha is only one of 6 that is named after a person. In this parsha, we see the rebellion of Korach, the budding of Aharon’s rod, and the duties of the kohanim and Levites. In this parsha, I wanted to pull out an old teaching that I haven’t touched in awhile as it does relate to this parsha- Is there more to why Moshe calls this the staff of Elohim? Possibly. In Midrashic literature, we see more about this staff.

This week’s parsha is the 42nd and 43rd of the year and it is a double parshot. The first part is called Mattot meaning tribes and the second part is called Masei translated as journeys. In the first parsha, it talks about vows and oaths. We learn how important our words are and are therefore taught to watch what we say at all times, lest we find ourselves being caught or trapped by our idle and vain words by which we are to be responsible for. Chapter 31 goes on to detail the war with Midyan. The parshat Masei recounts the encampments in the wilderness, the boundaries for the land, recounts the daughters of Tzlofchad story, and cities of refuge.
