The Screamcast

Horror-comedies were nothing new back in 1981, but Student Bodies beat (just barely) September the 14th as the first Slasher Parody to make it to theaters. This week we discuss the new Olive blu-ray of STUDENT BODIES as well as our Stream Screams pick, C.H.U.D. II; and our Vide-OMG pick, ENEMY TERRITORY!

The Flick:

Student Bodies (1981)

Director: Mickey Rose, Michael Ritchie (uncredited)

Written By: Mickey Rose

Starring: Kristen Riter, Matthew Goldsby, Jerry Belson

The thin line between comedy and horror is hilariously explored in Student Bodies, a spoof of contemporary slasher films such as Halloween, When A Stranger Calls, Friday the 13th. The body count is rising at Lamab High School where a goulashes-wearing, eggplant/chalkboard eraser/paperclip-wielding serial killer is taking out promiscuous teens at breakneck speed. When intrepid high school student, Toby (Kristen Riter) goes in search of clues that will reveal the killer’s identity, no one is safe from the comic hijinks. Teachers, fellow students, parents and the quadruple jointed janitor are all likely suspects in a film directed by Mickey Rose (co-writer on Woody Allen’s Take The Money And Run and Bananas). [Olive Films]

Other Films Discussed:

Harbinger Down, Furious 7, Escape From The Bronx, The Sword and the Sorcerer, Felt, Dark Was The Night, Shocker, Dressed to Kill, Showdown In Little Tokyo, Toolbox Murders 2, The Dead Lands, Black Moon Rising, Dope, Turbo Kid, Sinister 2

Stream Screams: C.H.U.D II: Bud The Chud (1984)

VideOMG: Enemy Territory (1987)

This week we tackle Kiah Roache-Turner’s Wyrmwood (also penned by Tristan Roache-Turner) which has recently been released by IFC Midnight & Scream Factory. Also, we discover an HD copy of April Fool’s Day (1986) and dig up yet another VHS snow-based slasher, Iced (1988)!

The Flick:

Wyrmwood (2014)

Director: Kiah Roache-Turner

Written By: Kiah Roache-Turner (screenplay), Tristan Roache-Turner (screenplay)

Starring: Jay Gallagher, Bianca Bradey, Leon Burchill

“Zombie Freaks And Fanatics … You’ve Just Stumbled Upon Your Favorite Film…” – Fangoria

“Good Old-Fashioned, Body-Chomping, Head-Shooting Zombie Action” – Screen Daily

In the aftermath of a comet breaking up over Earth, most of the planet’s population quickly succumbs to a strange disease which turns them into “zombies.” Few survive, and those who do, quickly discover all existing fuel sources have been rendered useless by the plague.

Trapped in a wilderness teeming with living dead, one of the survivors, Barry, has lost everything except his sister, Brooke. But even as the disaster unfolds, Brooke is kidnapped and dragged to a terrifying medical lab run by a psychotic “doctor” who is performing a series of deranged experiments on plague survivors. As Brooke struggles to devise an escape plan, she realizes that the doctor’s experiments have given her strange powers over his zombie captives. Unaware of his sister’s new powers, Barry teams up with fellow survivors to rescue her and protect what family he has left.

With a healthy dose of Mad Max-inspired vehicular mayhem and an enormous serving of pure, raw talent, this raucous post-apocalyptic epic is one of the most original and wildly entertaining genre films in years! [Scream Factory]
