  • 74 - Jam-Packed Convos [4]: The Surratt Brothers on their Relationship and How Seacoast Spends Money (and other things)

Pastors and brothers to one another, Jason and Josh Surratt talk a bit about what it's like to lead this  church, as they both were only kids when their parents started it back in 1988.  They let us in on some of those "brother dynamics" and how they play out in doing ministry together.  They also give a snapshot of how Seacoast is spending the money that the generous people of Seacoast contribute together through Seacoast's Legacy Giving.

Tomelex Copeland and Lynne Stroy give a big "NOPE" to the use of microchips people in Sweden are getting inserted with that function as IDs, train-fare and even car keys.  Joey wonders why Steph Curry pushed through to graduate college when he doesn't need the money, and lastly the three discuss what appears to be a trend of valuing others' political affiliation and “what side people are on” with divisive issues over kindness, love and the heart of a person.

  • 72 - Jam-Packed Convos [2]: "The Real Indians," Racial Joking (and other things)

Luke Gaikwad, Director of AV Systems/Technology here at Seacoast, shares what it’s like being from India and living in the US.  Alongside Jack, Lynne and Joey, the four question whether or not society is progressing well in how people treat one another, especially the treatment of minorities.  Joey wonders whether people could stand to be a bit more light-hearted and loose about what he sees as harmless – even positive –  and playful jokes about race.

  • 70 - Jesus Revolution and [Top Gun] Maverick: An "At the Movies" Discussion

[Pastors Greg and Josh Surratt talk "Top Gun: Maverick" and "The Jesus Revolution," recent movies that hit the big screen]

On most summers, Seacoast Church does a teaching series called “At the Movies,”  in which recent movie releases are dissected a bit, the teaching pastor on that particular Sunday highlighting some helpful applications, mixing in some scripture and showing some of the clips.

Because of copyright issues, any live-feed containing movie clips gets rejected from
Youtube and Facebook, two platforms Seacoast Online uses to broadcast Sunday services.   Thus, this last summer, a different route was taken on these two platforms, essentially an aired video podcast with that weekend’s speaker, a conversation about the movie and about their sermon  from various angles.

What you hear today are two of those conversations: Pastor Greg talking about The Jesus Revolution and Pastor Josh Surratt on Maverick, i.e. Top Gun part II.

  • 69 - Israel, Hamas, and Loving Enemies (w/ Pastors Naeem Fazal and Greg Surratt)

Former pastor at Seacoast Church and Lead Pastor at Mosaic Church in Charlotte, Naeem Fazal was born in Kuwait and is an Ex-Muslim.  He wrote a book with the very title:  Ex-Muslim.  He joins Pastor Greg Surratt and Joey Svendsen to discuss the war in Israel.  The three discuss various sentiments many Christians have  toward Israel  (for some, these sentiments are sacred) and how these thoughts can potentially be a distraction from the church's primary purpose in this world.

Along the way, the three discuss evil, including what the church's role is, in combatting it.  One reads in the bible that "we wrestle not against flesh and blood"  (Ephesians 6:12) as well as Jesus' command to "love enemies."  But there seems to be times in which violence is unavoidable, given the deeper aim at loving and protecting the oppressed.  How does one navigate the tension of  hating evil while still loving enemies? (Matthew 5:43-47).

  • 68 - Alzheimer's & Economics: Two Episodes in One.

    [Two Episodes in One]

Conversation 1:   Alzeihmer's Awareness Month is in November, reminding us all about the needed support for the more than 6.2 million Americans living with this disease and for their family members who face the challenges of caring for loved-ones.

Sara Perry joins Joey, Lynne and Campus Pastor at our West Campus, Jeff Leinberger to give more insight on this disease, including the toil it takes on loved ones.  Sarah is the Executive Director at Respite Care Charleston and is a Certified Dementia Practitioner.  The four also reflect on family members who battled, sneaking in some laughs during this heavy conversation.

Conversation 2:  All about economics, particularly that of the United States; everything from the US Federal Reserve to the mechanics of inflation,  two recent presidents who were fiscally responsible,  the extent of debt the US carries,  the Great Depression, the financial crisis of 2007-2008, China’s impact on our current economy, and predictions for the future.  Joey brings in some experts, both from our Seacoast Family: Jack Hoey and David Chorba.  These two took it upon themselves to keep things comprehendible to the folks with only general knowledge on this topic.  Shall we call this "American Economics for Dummies?"

  • 67 - Should Christians Watch Horror Movies?

It's a round table discussion with Seacoast folks who have dedicated their lives to Jesus and who also greatly enjoy horror movies.  Many people love the thrill of watching movies that fall into this genre, while others don't understand the appeal.  From demonic possession and scary hauntings to sadistic killers and bloody gore, the question at hand on this episode: should Christians consume this form of entertainment?

For fans of this movie genre, the episode throughout is also full of discussions on various horror movies, including the contributors' favorites.

  • 66 - All About Girls and Boys (but mostly girls)

Andi Andrew, with us today, released a book about two years ago titled, "Friendship -- It's Complicated."  This book focuses on connections specifically amongst women, and as Andi describes certain "complications" more common in relationships between two females, the general question at hand in this podcast episode is:  Just how different (and to what degree) are "guys and girls" from one another?

Andi Andrew, Roy Jacques, Joey Svendsen, and new to the podcast, Amy Worley, have an "all things guys and all things girls" conversation.  Although there is 100% buy-in amongst all four in the many inherent differences between the genders, they also acknowledge the many exceptions to the cultural stereotyping of "girls should like pink and ballet, while boys should like the color blue and football."   Today's discussion takes a look at how narrow views of society are usually unhelpful and often times counterproductive or harmful.

They also discuss some general themes including how transparency differs from vulnerability and instances when forgiveness for a friend may not include reconciliation.  Andi also shares the concept of "spiritual midwives" and why they are important in her life.
