Martha, Mary Lennox wakes up alone in the abandoned house in India after the cholera outbreak. Everyone around her—servants, her parents, and other residents—has either fled or perished. Confused and frightened, she wanders through the silent, empty house, realizing for the first time that she is completely alone. Days later, she is discovered by soldiers and taken to live with an English clergyman’s family. Cold and unloving, they find her spoiled and difficult. Soon after, Mary is sent to England to stay with her mysterious uncle, Archibald Craven, at Misselthwaite Manor. Summary by Dream AudioBooks
