Did you know that men often need strategies to help them through trauma that differs from women?
We talked about these concepts, and more in this week’s episode of the Reawaken Your Health podcast with psychotherapist Marc Azoulay. Marc has been a psychotherapist for over a decade and shared his journey into this field after surviving trauma in his childhood followed by drug addiction and recovery in his college years.
Marc explained his dive into Buddhism and psychoanalytic theory that helped him become clean and sober. He shared how he was able to face his demons and use Buddhism philosophy to help him realize that he is pure at his core and could use meditation to gain clarity.
We then discussed why he began treating men and why he pushes to help mental health treatment get up to speed for males. He shared how both political ends of the spectrum can be damaging to males and their mental health.
Marc explained one of the biggest issues related to men’s mental health: loneliness. He notes that men are not taught to connect and the competitive nature and judgment that surrounds a man’s emotional state can lead to a variety of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
We then explored how treatment for men can differ from women in that men are more object-oriented and need action. Marc explained how he has to challenge his clients and get them to see that the idea of sharing is not weak but powerful.
We discussed psychodrama and how it helps Marc achieve results with his clients. He also explained the idea of process circles and the use of the meso poetic heroes journey.
We covered much more on anger and rage, as well as the need for group therapy and retreats. Marc went into the detail on the need for individualized therapy prior to group sessions, where men form a community and bond.
Marc is the founder of Men’s Therapy Online and leads wilderness retreats to help his clients release from the past.
Please join us to learn more about the importance of addressing issues of mental health for the man in your life.
