  • Mike Van Pelt: Why Men Need Community and the Courage to Ask for Help
What if asking for help isn't weakness, but one of the strongest things a man can do?
Mike Van Pelt joins The Self-Leadership Lab for a wide-ranging conversation about what it means to be a man in today's world and why we were never meant to navigate life alone.
Mike is the founder of True Man Life Coaching, host of the True Man Podcast, author of True Man True Ways, and founder of American Family Renaissance.
We explore why so many men attach their identity to careers, money, possessions, and status, and what happens when those things become the measure of who we are.
We also talk about the difference between solitude and isolation, the power of men's groups, marriage and presence, learning to listen, mentorship across generations, decision fatigue, and why slowing down may be exactly what many of us need.
At the heart of the conversation is a simple idea:
Self-leadership is personal, but that doesn't mean it should be practiced alone.
Sometimes growth begins by finding the right people, becoming curious enough to listen, and being willing to ask for help.

  • Episode 100: I'm Still Learning to Lead Myself
When I started The Self-Leadership Lab, I thought I was creating a podcast to help other people learn how to lead themselves.
One hundred episodes later, I think the person it has taught the most might be me.
For this special 100th episode, I'm looking back at five lessons that have changed how I understand self-leadership:
You have to be honest with yourself.
Discipline is an act of stewardship.
    No one succeeds alone.
Stop trying to become impressive. Become faithful.
Self-leadership isn't about becoming someone new.
I also share some of the struggles behind the microphone, what community has taught me, why I'm rethinking my definition of self-leadership, and why I believe this journey is much more about faithful practice than finally "arriving."
As I say in the episode:
Maybe self-leadership isn't about creating a new identity. Maybe it's the faithful stewardship of what God has already given you.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of the first 100 episodes of The Self-Leadership Lab.
I hope you'll join me for the next 100.
Scripture referenced: Galatians 6:2 and Psalm 139:14.

  • Becoming Faithful Instead of Impressive: Who Were You Before the World Told You Who to Be?
Have you ever felt like you're trying to become someone else just to be enough?
In this solo episode, I share a realization that has reshaped the way I think about personal growth and self-leadership.
Inspired by Michelangelo's famous sculpture of David, we'll explore a different way of thinking about growth and not by adding more to our lives, but by removing everything that isn't truly us.
    Together we'll talk about:
Why we may never have been "lost"
    Confidence versus competence
    The trap of comparison
Becoming faithful instead of merely impressive
    Psalm 139:14
    Romans 12:2
Questions to help you uncover who God created you to be
Maybe self-leadership isn't about creating a new identity.
Maybe it's about faithfully stewarding the one God has already given you.

  • The Coherence Effect: From Stress and Burnout to Wholeness | Dr. Mickra Hamilton
What if stress, burnout, poor health, and disconnection aren't separate problems?
What if they're signals that something deeper has fallen out of alignment?
In this episode of The Self-Leadership Lab, I sit down with Dr. Mickra Hamilton, author of The Coherence Effect, to explore what it means to bring our minds, bodies, relationships, values, and actions back into coherence.
Mickra spent 30 years serving in the U.S. Air Force while also building a successful professional life. But beneath the achievement was a relentless drive to keep doing more. When a major health challenge forced her into stillness, she began asking questions she hadn't previously allowed herself the time to consider.
    Who am I?
    Why am I here?
    What really matters?
That experience began a journey that fundamentally changed the way she understood human health and performance.
In our conversation, we explore why high achievers often struggle with stillness, how breath can help regulate the nervous system, why sleep and nature are essential to well-being, and why self-love may be one of the most important starting points for meaningful change.
We also talk about community, alignment, listening to our bodies, and learning to see ourselves not as a collection of individual problems to solve, but as whole human beings.
    In this episode:
    • Understanding The Coherence Effect
    • Stress, burnout, and high achievement
    • The importance of stillness
    • Breath and nervous-system regulation
    • Reconnecting with nature
    • Sleep and circadian rhythms
    • Self-love and personal transformation
    • Mind, body, and spiritual alignment
    • Community and connection
    • Living according to your values
    • Moving from doing to being
    • Creating lasting change through simple practices
Perhaps most importantly, Mickra leaves us with a question worth sitting with:
What if everything I think I know isn't quite the way I think it is?
Sometimes transformation begins not with another answer, but with becoming willing to ask a different question.
