Communion connects us together around the beautiful truth that God has reconciled us to himself through forgiveness, and in doing so, he has invited us into his ongoing work of reconciliation in the world. As the Father sent Jesus, so Jesus sends us—filled with the Holy Spirit and empowered to carry the message that separation is over and communion has begun. This is what it means to be the church: we are called out of our private lives into a common life marked by self-sacrificing love and radical cooperation, living as ambassadors who bring people back together with God and one another. We remember not to feel guilty, but to be anchored in the promise that we belong to a reconciling God who is making all things new through us, his sent people.
