  • The SHE Word - S3/EP12 - Women Surviving Christmas

As we approach the Holiday Season and most are gearing up for the Christmas season with every gift imaginable, carols are playing on repeat, Christmas trees are being dusted off and children are thinking about what they want to ask for from Father Christmas, for some, the approaching holiday season is not a time of joy - it is a time of dread, or sadness and loneliness, and for some it is a season of fear.

Crisis support hotlines see usage rates spike by 25% to 30% on Christmas Day and Boxing Day alone, while crisis relief and emergency housing programs can see spikes of around 40%. Domestic violence increases up to 33% across Europe over the holiday season, and new research shows that 25% of young people experience loneliness during this time.

Well, this may not be an easy conversation to have, but it is a very important conversation - in this episode we are looking at surviving, and hopefully thriving, in the holiday season.

Joining Host Trudy Kerr is Dr Clarissa Sammut Scerri - Counselling psychologist and Family therapist, Kyra Borg - psychologist and manages a service for survivors of sexual assault and survivors of crime at Victim Support Malta, and Sasha Vella who literally needs no introduction - two time guest on The SHE Word, Young Women’s Edition Host, and a very important member of the SHE Word Family.

  • The SHE Word - S3/EP10 - Women and Sexual Health

Health is a frequently requested topic on The SHE Word, but one aspect of our health that is rarely discussed is our Sexual Health.

Whether due to embarrassment or lack of knowledge - we rarely give due importance to our emotional, medical and physical sexual health. However, the results of not giving our sexual health the relevance it deserves can have long term, and sometimes devastating implications.

On this episode, Host Trudy Kerr is joined by three women who are experts in their field to discuss this critical topic from all angles of sexual health. Fran Fenech Conti - founder of Women for Women and a women’s empowerment icon in Malta, also the woman who suggested the topic, Nicola Falzon - Head of Prevention Department at YMCA Malta, Trainee Psychotherapist and Mental & Sexual Health Advocate and Donia Gamoudi who is a doctor specialising in sexually transmitted infections, contraception and psychosexual medicine.

With recent findings stating that there are 13,000 new case of STIs every year and Malta's HIV rates the highest in Europe it seems that this show is long-overdue.

  • The SHE Word - S3/EP7 - Women and Identity
Some conversations are rarely had because they are controversial. It would be easy to avoid discussing topics that may be emotive, but that's not what we do on The SHE Word, we believe it is important to talk about even the most challenging topics, even if we don't agree. Defining the identity of a woman is not a topic that we would have considered perhaps even 5 years ago, but in an age where definitions are ever developing and inclusion is an important agenda, Women and Identity is a topic that will increasingly touch each of our lives in some way or another. Following an edition of Sue Caruana's Friday feature 'Keeping it Reel' when Sue expressed her concern that some aspects of inclusion may be at the cost of women's rights, the response was polarised and phenomenal. It was clear that there needed to be an in depth discussion on the topic. Three women with varied viewpoints sit down together with host Trudy Kerr to discuss one of today's most emotive topics. Alexia DeBono is self-employed writer and digital marketer, but also the Co-President of the Volt Malta Party, Dr Maria Pisani is a senior lecturer at the University of Malta and cofounder and director of the Integra Foundation, and Sue Caruana who has been on The SHE Word twice before with Body Modification and Surviving Relationship Trauma as well as contributing a popular Friday afternoon reel to the channel. • The SHE Word - S3/EP6 - Women and Menopause Revisited
There are few certainties in life, but for women who reach their mid to late forties*, menopause is GUARANTEED to affect us in one way or another, and yet a large proportion of women don't know about it, don't talk about it and have very little idea of how it is going to affect their life. Recent statistics reveal (29%) of women never sought information about menopause before they experienced it. One-fifth (20%) of women surveyed had experienced symptoms for a year or more before being assessed by a healthcare provider and 34% had never been formally assessed or diagnosed as menopausal and most (73%) women reported that they were not currently treating their menopause. So we are revisiting this topic, with experience, insight, wisdom, stories and a good does of humour - because this topic NEEDS more conversation.Deirdre Farrugia - first time SheWorder - an athlete, an olympian, a wife and mother, is joined by Izzy Warrington who featured on the SHE Word before in the show Women and the Arts with Tez Saliba and Ira Losco, and Karen Schranz - fitness instructor, business woman, mother and wife, hosted by Trudy Kerr. • The SHE Word - S3/EP5 - Women and Menstruation
Periods will affect almost every single woman one way or another and will stay with us for approximately 37.5 years of a woman's life. A woman will menstruate for an equivalent duration of 6.5 years of her life. On average, women will have 500 periods over their lifetime, which equals 3,500 days spent menstruating, this amounts to over 10,000 period products in one lifetime. Women in Europe spend around €675 every year on menstrual hygiene products. Based on an average menstrual lifetime of at approximately 40 years, this comes to a total outlay of around €27,000, before taking into account related costs for pharmacological or pain-alleviating products. Of course, each woman is unique so that number will vary, but understanding your cycle is important since you will have so many throughout your life.Guests Chiara Frendo-Balzan - an intensely loved and respected Obstetrics/Gynecology Doctor specialising women’s health and sexual health, with Audrey Galea Souchet who is a Women’s Health Physiotherapist specialising in the pelvic floor and Rebecca Spiteri aka content creator Rebecca's Lifestyle join Host Trudy Kerr to discuss this topic that affects every single woman. Our experts blow away the myths of period pain, what we should put up with, what to do when you think something might be wrong, and common conditions that affect our cycle.
