In this sermon on Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning, God," Pastor Andrew shows how Genesis shapes our entire understanding of the Spiritual Universe. Genesis 1:1 establishes the foundation for understanding everything that follows in Scripture. Genesis 1-11 introduces the Creator, creation, humanity, sin, death, judgment, grace, and God's unfolding plan of redemption. The opening chapters of Genesis also establish the biblical worldview by identifying God as the eternal Creator who existed before time, matter, space, and everything within the created order.
The distinction between Creator and creation shapes the entire Christian understanding of reality. Genesis points beyond the physical universe to the God who created it, while the rest of Scripture directs our attention toward knowing Him, worshiping Him, and understanding His work of salvation. John 1 and Colossians 1 further reveal that all things were created through the Son, who entered His creation in order to redeem it, giving Genesis 1:1 a profound connection to the person and work of Jesus Christ.
